Not sure what happened to me, but it just didn't click. It was to slow, even most for a 1 Hr episode. Gundam Wing and Iron Blooded Orphans had better starts... I don't remember if SEED did well too.

Banagher's obsession for "Audrey" is pretty disturbing to watch + Micott is the obvious "unrequited love" one just to waste timescreen... just like Aldnoah Zero! (Well Unicorn was aired first so it is the other way around...)

Also there is a "Looks like Char but is not Char but eventually gonna be Char thanks to newtype's magical b--s--t". Isn't enough the asteroid from the previous movie to rid him?

sorry to be kinda negative but I had high expectations of the UC timeline Gundams for the well speaked/ranked are (just look the first page of this thread, all you guys are considering it a masterpiece stuff while I found it ok) and considering how much I love the "spin off" ones like Gundam 00, I want to give this anime a chance (and they are 7 ovas, is very approachable compared to the usual Gundam 50-episode-long ones + it is on Netflix).

Can't believe this OVA is 10 years old already.
I was a bit lost during the first 20 or so minutes but then got into the events and understood who wants what, nice.

Loved that “Runaway princess” poster, nice allusion to Mineva's situation. Plus her pseudonym (Audrey Burne) is likely a reference to a famous actress Audrey Hepburn (the woman on the poster even looks like her).

Cardeas is voiced by Takayuki Sugou, THE seiyuu behind Okita Juuzou and Simon! Too bad Cardeas died in this episode and I won't hear more of his deep voice.

The writer of the source novel, Harutoshi Fukui, is kinda infamous - he created Moon Gundam, which is already a bad sign after watching ZZ (I don't even need to read this Moon Gundam, I already know what to expect), plus he wrote the script for the not-very-great Yamato 2202... I hope Unicorn will be better, at least the director, Kazuhiro Furuhashi, gives me hope - he seems to have a pretty solid career, plus he storyboarded Mononoke (which is awesome). I'll try to be cautiously optimistic.

Nice mecha designs, cool new details like safety bags in cockpits. Though I should say I was (and still am) quite lost at the colony's design, it's kinda confusing now, what's all this new stuff inside? Where did Mineva fall?

The music was epic, but it was epic in a very generic sense - it didn't feel unique or super memorable. But whatever, was fine still. Though I expected a bit more from Hiroyuki Sawano.

Casval Deikun -> Char Aznable -> Quattro Bajeena -> Char Aznable -> Full Frontal? Or is this really another guy?

No ED sequence despite all shiny animation and the apparent huge budget :-[ Anyway, animation-wise Unicorn looks superb, though there was a moment when Banagher's class kinda disappeared after the fight beteen Marida and the Fed mobile suit. Where are the corpses? Other than that, all's good.

Overall nice first episode, some dialogues (like Banagher's emotional "confession" to "Audrey") were a bit cheesy but whatever. I'm hooked into the conflict, I think. And yay, it's finally Mineva taking action!

----------------------------------------------------

@Rei_III Regarding Sawano, I actually think that his "grand" music works best in seemingly inappropriate contexts. I haven't seen most of the titles he was involved with, but I think that his music was awesome in Kill la Kill precisely because it amplified the absurdity of everything that was going on in the show, and it was fun. In Unicorn though, "grand" music is only expected given the context, and that's why it feels "flat" sometimes. It's just so natural to connect "grand music" with "serious space real robots" that you don't notice the soundtrack. It's not bad, just fine, I guess. And the OST is more distinctive outside of battles anyway.

Haven't seen that Harlock movie (as well as the original show, Leijiverse is so grand that I'm scared to even start), but the mere fact that it's a 3DCGI animated movie tells me everything I need to know about it :p

@St0rmblade Looks like you did the good choice (I watched the TV broadcast since it was offered by BANDAY on Gundam's official YT page but it had way too abrupt ).
About Sawano's music, I always felt like it was aiming for grandness (epicness would be the internet anime word for it, I imagine) but ended up often flat and devoid of an actual effect. Funny that I connected several of his works before learning about his existence. Sadly, his style is highly appreciated nowadays. (not saying it sounds bad of course, it doesn't)

Glad you're appreciating the story it sets up so far.

"Finally Mineva taking action !" My thoughts at first. ^^

PS: you forgot that he retook his Deikun to use it as public persona in CCA. ;)

PPS: Fukui is actually famous and... enjoys a rather good success in his career. ^^" Personally, I still dislike his works though. Also, please never forget to cite his Harlock movie as one of his terrible feats, even if you never watched it (it shall not be forgiven).

True, I remember it fondly in Kill la kill probably because of that!
There is no such thing as Leijiverse ;) , just a big pool made of a few good titles and filled up with more or less awkward derivative works. Arcadia of my Youth is a film to watch for every space opera lover.

Rereading my 0096 reactions, I'm noticing I was actually far too enthusiast at first. XD

Ok that was really cool! Too many characters made it a bit confusing and I watched the prequels about a decade ago (damn Im old), but apart from that this seems promising!

And fantastic production values! This is why Gundam had always made sense with OVAs, it just fits with the whole space thing!

Yo, this was a crazy good episode and the story shows a lot of potential. I probably gotta do some research regarding some factions to refresh my memories, but fortunately Gundam has an extremely extensive wiki.

This certainly looks promising. Banagher is an interesting character, who has suddenly been given a great responsibility, not unlike previous Gundam protagonists before him.

Visuals are great, but the plot was a little confusing.
I didn't understand who is Zeon group fighting with. And why did Banagher decide to join the fight against Marida, except she was ruining the colony. Wasn't his father who entrusted the mobile suit to him, on their side?

@procion you should watch zeta and ZZ because it's pretty common that some character will switch sides

wonderful first episode, a bit confusing but i LOVED it
i'm just sad fo the omnipresent classic gundam tropes like micott being the obvious ''other woman'' unrequited love interest.
and wow, is audrey minerva zabi?

Actually an amazing episode, though I do have some gripes with concept. The technology seems weirdly advanced compared to CCA, despite this only occurring 3 years after. Likewise, it's odd that the kids in the AE school view war as this far-removed concept, when they would have been 13 during the 2nd Neo Zeon war. 3 years after CCA is when people should be making conspiracy theories about Amuro still being alive, not discussing war as if it hasn't happened for decades, and mentioning Char like a historical figure. There's also a disproportionate focus on the OYW so far, which I guess is true of most Gundam shows. But c'mon, what about either Neo Zeon war?? It's also odd how many decades-old organizations and names are thrown around that were never even hinted at in the Tomino Gundams, though I of course understand it had to be done for spinoff's sake. It's great to see Mineva again though, and I think having her as a main character could go amazing places. Same with Marida, she's awesome! And damn, the Unicorn and Kshatriya are cool.

Unfortunately I spent the entire episode confused about what the factions were and which character belonged to them, which hampered my enjoyment. I had to find a reddit guide to all the factions to wrap my head around it.
