Mods have convinced me that this is no longer a viable suggestion. Refer to my closing statement here. In light of recent events surrounding the counting/gif threads, I wanted to throw up a suggestion. And if a mod runs into this, it would be great if you could add an agree/disagree poll. On to the subject at hand. We should be allowed to make threads that deny access to under-aged users. The main reason being that we should be able to have a place to post mature and/or sensitive content. Given how horny enthusiastic MAL is about posting NSFM content, I feel like we should be given access to do such a thing, without fear of being banned/moderated for such. The current work-around is for users to create "secret" clubs; clubs that are hidden from the public without any way for them to access it without being accepted into those clubs. The point of forums is for open discussion, and having to have mature NSFM open discussion within a secluded "secret" club is... odd, and limits the amount of open discussion available. One argument brought up constantly is "couldn't people fake their age to get into those restricted threads?" Why yes, yes they can. But they can do the same for "secret" clubs as well. If/when such a club were to become common knowledge, fake 18+ users can easily get into both. In the event that fake ages become a problem, a warning to users entering 18+ threads should suffice. No one is responsible except the user if they entered a restricted thread despite being warned. ============================================================================ Aside from my suggestion, a few users have given their own opinions on how to handle 18+ threads: ***edit:As suggested by Immahnoob, rather than have a lock on who can enter/gain access to 18+ threads, users will be given a warning message asking if they would like to continue into a thread in a yes/no seperate page. By clicking yes to consent, users take full responsibility for anything they were to see. The OP is given the option of rating his thread 18+ material or not during topic creation. ***edit 2:An alternative option suggested by uzu-dragons would be to create a separate 18+ board, with my additional suggestion to hide visibility/access to the board to those <18 and guests. ***edit 3:tomber suggests an alternative to the separate main board. Rather than a separate board, a "sub" board within a currently existing one could work. Taking the other edits into consideration, this sub board may have restricted visibility/access and have a warning message. ***edit 4:Less of a separate suggestion and more as an addition to the above options, weakwithwords suggests an "access rights" setting in our options. There, users can toggle whether they would like access to 18+ threads or not without going through warning messages. ============================================================================ These suggestions are tying into another user's suggestion to create a casual chat thread/junk board. As a (hypothetical) chat devolves evolves into NSFM territory, any form of conversation is instantly cut off because mods lock/delete all relevant material. An 18+ Restricted thread would solve that. Being able to talk about any NSFM material in a loosely moderated environment is a definite plus. Of course, that doesn't mean they won't be moderated. 18+ threads are still discussions, after all. The only difference is that NSFM material is accepted in those threads. *sigh* that was incredibly superfluous. Props to me for typing it :D tl;dr Allow us to make 18+ threads (or have a board) so we can talk about whatever NSFM material we want without getting banned. Feel free to leave comments to improve it (may edit them in). Probably won't debate with you because I hate debates I'll try to address any concerns and well.. I want it to happen. Your opinion is appreciated! Well, it looks like the poll's not happening anytime soon, so: Even if you don't have any particular argument to make, it would be appreciated if you could state your position on whether you agree/disagree with this suggestion. Not much need for simple approvals, anymore. Thanks guys for all your support. Still open for feedback though! Right now the more pressing concern is right here. If you have any way of dealing with this issue, feel free to respond! And if you happen to quote me, you better send me a high-five on my comments for discovering this hidden text. Recent edit: May as well remove the strike-through so people can read ancient history. |

Yay Mellow! :) Koleare will be here soon I assume :D. Yeah I agree with the suggestion, Forum > Secret club, in the clubs the activity level would be so low and no new people would join in with the fun/discussion. |

Far too many loop holes in the system, and this simply just supporting spam. As if the MAL community would actually have mature discussions over NSFM content. The threads would become a contest of who can outdo other users in what they find. |
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives. |

Edit your initial post for the poll. A better idea would be not to restrict anything, but just give the warning with a Enter? Yes/No... The thread will be rated by the OP (while making the thread, just like adding a poll) as NSFW (18+). Also, from what I remember, these type of threads were not locked because of the subject itself, but because of flaming/baiting/trolling, as subjects like sex (I've talked about fucking your own clone... So the subject isn't a problem) have been discussed without topic locks. Oh, and yeah, I disagree with your initial one with the restriction and I gave you my idea on how it would be better. |

I don't think the mods will like this though, it seems like it will be encouraging 18+ threads. When this is an anime site and anime has no age limit. I feel like there will be a large surge of 18+ threads as soon as this is put into action. |

I would always Enter the 18+ porn sites even though I was only like 12... Whew, that felt great to get off my chest. OnT: It's a good idea. Mellow's and/or this idea is an easy way for anyone in general anyone of age on the forum to enter and talk versus having to create a 'secret' 18+ club and hassling with finding people interested. |

My 1000th post! Will be spent discussing arguments. ): Post-Josh said: True, there are other things with higher priority. As for embedded, I see posts containing spoilered NSFM links Like right here which may as well just be open and in plain sight. Restricting it to 18+ access would actually help in his rec, since we could provide visual proof of what he wants, rather than just giving names.Personally, I don't see this taking precedence over at least a few dozen other changes. ...So how do we determine who's 18+ and who isn't? The warning isn't going to stop the horny 15 year-old from lying about age hoping for some easy pr0n. Age restrictions in general, whether it be games, websites, forums, ect., never seem to serve their intended purpose. They're like the ratings in movies nobody pays attention to or bypasses altogether. Enforcement is the main problem. There's nothing wrong with this idea otherwise. |

Kinda late on this but I find it somewhat pointless. I don't think the site rules have anything to say about actual NSFM discussions but I don't really think it's much different than posting NSFM content, which is against the rules. So instead of talking about these 'adult' topics, how about just not starting them to begin with? Honestly, that'd solve a lot of problems. This isn't a 'that' kind forum, and if you wanted to talk about 'that' stuff, there are other places too. Though call me a hypocrite or whatever, I'm sure I've posted some pics in certain threads in the past. |

I don't see why those topics of discussion can't stay to clubs.. but if something like this were to be implemented I'd rather have an 18+ message board. That way users can gain access (along with a warning message or whatever), and then see all the threads in one place and choose which ones to visit from there. Otherwise clicking on links and getting a warning/Are you sure? message each time would become annoying real fast. Granted, that could be easily gotten around by having some kind of 18+ icon by the title of thread to warn users instead, but personally I wouldn't want to see anything of the like on the forums... after all, these boards aren't made for "mature" topics in the first place, and seeing them would give users the wrong impressions. |

Well, given that Jenny's thread was deleted, it seems like NSFM discussions aren't allowed either (and some of the posts in there were taken pretty seriously). On your point about not making it at all, what is this kind of forum? We can list our hentai, spoiler-post NSFM material, and hell, talk about some pretty... iffy stuff. I can actually remember proper discussion threads on MAL, which is amazing compared to all the threads we have now which usually turn into some trollingshitstorm.
