Have you ever tried to explain or present something and then the person(s) who is listening immediately pauses you and tells you that you are speaking too fast? I mean once a while is okay, but does it happen to you occasionally?

Now I have my fair share of this situation when I have to explain mathematical concepts to other people, so how about you? Are you one of those people?

I either think my thoughts through before speaking at all, or my words are exactly what I'm thinking. But it takes a certain abnormal mood and situation for my thoughts to instantly translate to spoken words.

I've found that I can train myself to think at the same speed I'm writing.

I usually pause to organize my thoughts and then speak quickly in a concise manner. I rarely have people tell me that they fail to understand my point, but then again I usually deal with pretty intelligent people. The only time this might happen is if I carelessly use terms that the audience is unfamiliar with.

I usually think before I speak up about anything, so I don't really know if I think faster than I speak.

I definitely think faster than I can write though- and I would like to take this time to apologize to all of the erasers I have destroyed over the years due to this.

Yeah, I do talk fast sometimes. But only when I'm anxious or angry about something.

I don't understand how anyone can speak faster than they could think. It sounds absurd and impossible.

As for the speaking slow and quickly part - I usually speak slowly with precise words, so it rarely happens to me.

It happens sometimes when I speak with friends. But not too often.
I'm used to explain things to others slowly so I don't have that problem here. I think it's a matter of practice ;)

Isn't that actually speaking as fast as you think instead of speaking slower than the way you think? It seems to be the opposite from the title.

^ This. My response time is pretty slow in general to the point where people think that I'm ignoring them but really the information hasn't processed in me yet and that I'm thinking how to respond.

I have always been told that I speak too fast. Sometimes, people who aren't used to hearing me speaking have a hard time understanding what I'm saying. This only happens with my two native languages though, and that's probably because I can instantaneously translate my thoughts into words. When I'm speaking in English, I'm less confident and have to think about the words I will use, so I speak slowly.

No, I don't think so. Though I do often think way more than I express in words. I even think of whole sentences parallel to the one I actually said that go from somewhat deranged to just plain silly ones, though I never say them. That usually happens when the person I'm talking to is less confident or talkative than I am.

I tried that myself, but they still go blank most of the time. Then after a while, I realized that it helps if I write it out

I am just a fast talking person in general...a lot of times I find myself talking way to fast and people are like woah slow down. Sometimes when I am talking to fast my sentences get jumbled and I have to stop and think...what the hell did I just say? lol

I have a tendency to talk faster than I think, resulting in the occasional botched sentence or stutter. I'm not really a fast talker, I just think slowly in words.

Haha Yeah. I talk pretty fast, and I am told frequently to slow down. I talk fast especially when I'm nervous. I don't even mean to do it. It's just the way I am. =)

I barely even talk, and when I do I think 5 times before doing so. It's weird because all my life until around 14 it was the complete opposite, I talked like crazy and most of the time didn't even think about what I was saying.

I think before I speak most of the time.

If I end up thinking while I am speaking, I start to skip words because my mouth tries to catch up with my brain. If I am thinking about something other then what I'm talking about (Which happens a lot, I blame my ADHD) I end up saying words from what I am thinking.

For ex. "Hello Bob, how are pizza?... I meant you!"

I guess I do kind of, when I make speeches or do my video game playthroughs on Youtube. Usually just end up saying whatever is in my mind. If I had to choose one way or the other though, I would say they are both in sync for the most part, with my brain in the slight lead.

Yes! I'm a very "fast" person in everything I do. So, I tend to talk very fast, which confuses the poor people I'm talking too. The worst is when I'm reading out loud, though. People tell me to slow down every time.

All the time.

It also doesn't help that I'm such a "global" thinker that my thoughts/ideas are not always linear, so when I talk, I talk fast and I jump from one thing to another.

I was made aware of this a few years ago and have since been trying to fix it. It's hard to break a habit, though, but I am getting better xD I get less confused looks!

hmm..pretty much do it at the same time, finish thinking as I'm talking but I don't think ahead, as for talking fast...I'm considered a fast talker that a lot of times it sounds like I'm chaining words together..which isn't the case..I just leave tiny spaces between the words.

my ability to articulate is not capable of keeping up with my thoughts... it has always frustrated me. to put it into perspective, when I was young I learned to speed-read in paragraphs around 5 or so... I had alot of problems in actually representing ideas in sentences much less words, and was able to just look at a paragraph and somehow just internalize it which gave me godly reading speeds. to put it simply, I have always had a hard time expressing with words, and often find myself rambling in a disjointed manner because the conversation is advancing much more rapidly in my head that it makes it rather difficult to express it is a slow and concise manner. I of course slow down my actual talking and breath and pause and such so others can understand me, but even at the fastest talking possible I never am at a loss of words. It is useful being able to process information so fast, although the general lack of organization in my mind for others to comprehend is a bit handicap which has caused me many issues in life.

Logorrhea anyone?

Hell yeah! I have this problem all the time. It's actually hard for me to slow down. I think so fast, I can't enunciate what I want to say. And when it comes out, it's a mess.
