I like to watch it because a lot of people tell me it is extraordinary and I am wondering where should I start?

I am NOT (typo...) huge mecha fan, so I am not sure if will turn out as good as it is. Do I need to watch the movies beforehand? Should I watch it in English or Japanese?

Thank you

Watch Ghost in the Shell movie, then its sequel, and then watch season 1 of the TV show, then season 2, then the TV movie, then read the manga, and then finally put Motoko as a favourite character in your profile.

By the beggining. Movie, then Innocence, then SAC, then 2nd Gig..... Basically, watch them in release order.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 -> Ghost in the Shell: Innocence -> Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex -> Ghost in the Shell 2nd G.I.G. -> Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society

I highly recommend watching the original Ghost in the Shell rather than the (pointlessly) touched-up 2.0 version.

From memory you should watch the first film before you watch the tv series, much of the main plot is a follow-up from the original GITS film.

Doesnt matter if you've watched the second film.

The movies and TV series are largely unrelated, but I recommend watching the first movies first, just because it gives a more fundamental background than the TV series does.

I went:
Ghost in the Shell --> Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex --> Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence -->Ghost in the Shell 2nd GIG (which I never finished, despite my love of GitS)

But, if I were to do it all over again, I'd watch Innocence before Stand Alone Complex.

Also, it really doesn't matter that you don't like mecha. There's not a lot of that in GitS, really. Aside from the occasional tank battle, or even rarer a fight with an actual mechsuit, there's nothing I'd call "mecha."

I'd recommend starting with the first movie at least. I didn't much care for the other movies, but everyone has their own tastes. Then jump into the series unless you want to watch the other movie or two.

As for what to watch them in, that's all up to you. When I watched Ghost in the Shell a number of years ago, I watched it in English, so it's grown on me.

The English dub is great, it's very accurate to the original script, and all the characters are well done. With subs, you have the risk of not getting a perfectly clear translation, since I see a lot of differences among the groups. It's up to you though.

As others have said, go with Ghost in the Shell (Original I would say, 2.0 isn’t all that bad just a little pointless) Innocence, Stand Alone Complex, SAC: 2nd Gig, Solid State Society.

I would say the original voice cast is by far the best, though the dub is alright too. After the anime’s you could read the manga, but I found that to be a bit disappointing next to the animes, each to there own however ^_^

Is 2.0 a recap or filler?

It is exactly the same as the original movie only some scenes are redone with CG animation, hence why we all say the original is better because GC animation just sticks out like a sore thumb in anime. Every scene is so much better in its original format.

I heard for the best enjoyment you should watch in this order;

Ghost in the Shell (movie)-> GitS 2: Innocence (movie) -> Stand Alone Complex (series) -> Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig (series) -> Solid State Society (i thought a movie)

May get flamed for this, but oh well...
I say watched the Series first.
I love the film (and i did watch it before i watched SAC), but i enjoyed SAC FAR more than the film (and they don't really have much to do with each other anyway, so it doesn't really make a difference as the story of one is totally different from the other)

the movie and tv show are completely seperate things, they share the same characters and same basic concept, but that is all. some people like the show better, i like the movies better, mostly because i am a huge oshii fan.

the manga is different from both the show and the movie, its good though, you should read it for suuurrrreeee

if you watch the first movie and you like it, i would recommend you watch both "Patlabor" movies, they are from the same director, and have the same look and feel to them.

I've only watched the first movie, so I don't know if it will explain more in later movies.

I am lost by pretty much the whole thing

Was the plot about a humanoid cyborg hunting down some terrorist named "Puppet Master" that later turned out to be another cyborg? I am really confused by the roles of some of the characters. The story-telling part was poorly done, it was as confusing as Kara no Kyoukai.

I don't think I will watch it again, for the most part, the movie was just a lot action. I am putting the sequel movies on hold for now.

Kara no Kyoukai is confusing because it just throws you into a story with characters who remain absolute strangers throughout the film. There is no backstory, no introduction and very little explanation. The first Kara no Kyoukai movie is probably better suited to viewing after having seen some of the others (or at least the second one), as then we would have an established cast and an understanding of the story and situation, rather than learning very little throughout the film and coming away very disppointed and caring nothing for what we just saw. It seems more of a one-off film for extablished Kara no Kyoukai fans rather than the introduction to a film series.

Ghost in the Shell is different from Kara no Kyoukai though. All of the groundwork is there for you to understand the story, the characters and the whole Ghost in the Shell universe. It isn't poorly done, it is just complex. Undoubtedly it is a movie that grows on you over time. I have seen the movie four times and it gets better and easier to comprehend with every viewing. I suggest giving it another whirl (not straight away) before making up your mind about it. A lot of people don't like Ghost in the Shell because they don't understand it, but once you grasp the story hopefully you'll find that it is something quite magnificent. You shouldn't expect to understand everything on the first viewing, that's just not how some movies work.

So I am assuming the next movie won't shed light on the first movie and explain?
