I'd like to know what you thought of them. I'm planning to buy them all, but I'm not sure which one to start with, or even if it's worth buying them. Anyone played these? Even if you hated them, let me know why you hated them.

Good luck with that, a couple of them are no longer being sold at reasonable prices. Namely Tales of Abyss and Vesperia which I suppose are the most popular ones

Ahh, I've got plenty of money so that's not an issue, I'm just wondering if it's worth spending that much on the games if they're going to be bad or good.^^ I've seen the Abyss anime so thats why I want that game the most, shame it's one of the most expensive though. ;;

Fixed.

And I'd take my time with the purchases if I were you. Tales games run on a template. In other words: they're all very similar to each other. I've played five of those titles and feel like I've played every Tales game ever made already. I'm not saying that they're bad though.

Funny how nobody is shunning the idea of buying Dawn of the New World away yet.

I thought radiant mythology was fine, I guess it depends on how you play it. The little sub-missions can be avoided if you want to play the game faster.

Vesperia is a must buy, but I believe the ps3 version has bonus content where the 360 one doesn't. (I have the 360 one.)

Talk to a user named Feder, he knows a lot more about the Tales series than I do.

I got my (second) copy of Vesperia for $18 last month at a store closing sale. It was a new copy btw. The highest price I've seen for it was $34.99 in used condition.

It's still pricey online. I initially got mine on sale in a store for $20, but that was long after it released.

tales games are one of the best jrpg series.
my personal favorite is Vesperia for the xbox 360. It had one of the best main protagonist throughout the tales series. A close second is Symphonia for the gamecube, which set the bar for future tales games. Overall, Vesperia would be one of my top five favorite games

I bet you were lucky to find it too. The longer you wait to buy a Tales game, the harder it is to find on shelves. Good luck finding the Tales games for the SNES, PS1, GBA, PSP version of Phantasia, etc. OP.

I have:

I've played all of these at least a few hours worth...

Out of the English releases, I'd recommend (in this order): Abyss <- Symphonia <- Destiny 2/Eternia PSX <- Vesperia <- Destiny (PSX) <- Phantasia (GBA)

Most would rate Vesperia higher, I think, but I personally though Eternia/Destiny 2 was much more charming, and enjoyed Symphonia and Abyss more, mostly because they have far better stories than Vesperia. Vesperia's story takes a bit to get rolling, and then just kinda falls apart in the third arc. But the characters can be fun and the gameplay is pretty decent.

The PSP games aren't that hard to find, if you're willing to play the games in Japanese. English version Eternia for the PSP might be hard to find because it was only released in Europe, but most of the Japanese releases are not that hard to find, as long as you're willing to pay a price for them. The PSX English versions of Destiny and Destiny2/Eternia aren't even THAT hard, but they are pretty expensive.

Actually, if you plan to start any Tales games that are on the PS2 platform, you should start with Legendia first just because it's too underrated thanks to the gameplay is lacking compared to Abyss or even Symphonia.

If you played Abyss or any of the later releases first, you may come to hate Legendia without even giving it a chance.

I've played quite a few of them and the two I'd recommend the most are Abyss and Vesperia though Symphonia was also great it's kind of like the FF7 of the series. It's what most North American tales fans started on, and is largely hyped as the single best game in the series by most.

Radiant Mythology seems to be getting a lot of hate but I found it fairly enjoyable, it was far from the best but it was more then I was expecting from a handheld game. I liked it better then Phantasia and Dawn of the New World personally.

Yep! Vesperia is a great game, unfortunately I missed out on Symphonia for my GameCube though :(

To the original poster, I would definitely pick up Vesperia, however make sure you get it for the PS3 (if you have the option) as they have added a lot more content to that version I think. Was a bit annoying as I don't think the 360 version will even get that content as DLC :(

I have played 5, Vesperia, Abyss, Legendia, Symphonia, and the Phantasia GBA remake.

I'd avoid the Phantasia GBA remake, the combat pissed me off to no end. Anyone who thinks the GBA can't experience slowdown is wrong. Never got the play the SNES version, but going based on youtube vids, it looks like the combat plays much better.

Legendia was my favorite, but it's definitely the black sheep of the Tales franchise for having a different developer and going back to 2D combat after Symphonia went more 3D with its combat.

I have just Vesperia, Abyss, and Symphonia. I had Legendia, Symphonia 2 and Phantasia.

I don't the recurring themes in Legendia, and Symphonia 2. The story of Legendia wasn't that good to me, and I was very dissapointed with Symphonia 2, not just by it's short game length, but also how it was just a rehash elements of the first game with a "New Story", and a bad english dub.

I liked Vesperia the most because Yuri didn't fall into a cliche. He got close to the anti-hero, but I liked how when everyone in the past games find out if someone is royalty they all respond in awe.....But if Yuri does: He already knows, and plays coy. That, and he doesn't let some law get in the way of those who deserved justice like what Luke, and the gang did in Abyss that made the game longer by 2 hours. Not to mention my love for Judith as well. :3

People hate Legendia's combat not because it went back to a 2D playstyle, but because it was just bad. Most Tales fans will tell you that the 2D games have the best combat, after all.

Symphonia was indeed awesome.

I have a general rule of thumb that once a platform manuf. comes out w/ a next gen platform, I don't feel too guilty about getting a rom or emu of an older gen game.

Case in point, Dolphin emu, Tales of Symphonia.

I would also agree that Vesperia and Symphonia are both really good games. 360 version has a US release but the PS3 version has an extra character: Patty (but that has no US release YET). I'd probably start out with Symphonia and yes Tales of games are great games.

Sure have! I own the following ones:

- Tales of Phantasia
- Tales of Destiny
- Tales of Symphonia
- Tales of Legendia
- Tales of the Abyss
- Tales of Vesperia

They're all really great games. If you're an RPG fan I'm sure you'd enjoy them as well.

i haven't played all of them, but i can list my opinion on the ones i have played. i think my opinion differs from that of most people, mostly about the two symphonia games, so i figured i'd post.

symphonia looks absolutely terrible and has lackluster character development. hard to get into any of the characters; the skits were poorly voiced and they weren't that funny or enlightening anyway. i thought it was decently fun despite this; spamming zelos' hell pyre and s. lightning blade ftw. its plot does make sense though, which is more than i can say for vesperia. i started playing it years ago but gave up because i was so bored, but finally played it through because of the urgings of a friend and was sadly not blown away like everyone else seemed to be.

symphonia 2 (dawn of the new world) is fantastic imo. the monster system is a blast, and the symphonia characters are suddenly likable and funny due to the superior voice direction. even presea has a personality now! the new characters are fantastic as well, particularly tenebrae. emil's character development is quite impressive. working out a speedrun of this atm. most of the events seem to fit together and i think the centurion thing was handled well since they weren't mentioned at all in the original. richter is mai hasubando.

vesperia is easily the one i've played the most; quite a few playthroughs and many hours later, it's still a blast. rita is easily the best character in any video game i've played. the plot is convoluted and gets even worse as the game progresses, but nearly all of the characters are great and grade farming/tidal wave spam is p. much the best thing ever. oh, and yuri is not your typical whiny-ass teenage male main character, unlike lloyd, luke, etc. he's actually awesome. and it has an EXTREMELY MOE final boss!

legendia is what i've seen people call the "bastard child" game. i admittedly haven't played this for quite a few years, but i did beat it in the past and enjoyed it quite a bit. norma, chloe, moses and jay are a great set of characters that bring the laughs constantly. planning on a replay sometime soon so i can reevaluate the game for myself. in my opinion, it's not bad like i've seen some people make it out to be.

i've played the first five or so hours of abyss. i can't stand hardly any of the characters, and i got stuck in a dungeon (i was a noob with no interwebs) so i just gave up. will give it another chance though. i watched the anime and can at least say that tear owns.

currently playing phantasia on the playstation. i'm like...an hour in, rotfl. can't say anything besides arche is cute.

I've played Phantasia, Destiny, Symphonia, Symphonia 2 and Vesperia...

Not sure I'm found of the battle system in the originals, it's far more interesting than a simple turn based system but its a little awkward at times, definetly more friendly in the later, more modern games. As for the characters, I think all of them are colourful and quite fun to have as companions.

Recommened ToS(2) or ToV to anyone really, big fan of the games...

Well I tend to boast about being this huge Tales fan.. (Which I am) but not all of them have really appealed to me

Vesperia being the clear winner, the characters were the winning point for me. Then next is Abyss, with symphonia/Legendia just slightly below that

Tales of Graces f wasn't really to my liking, and I'm waiting patiently for Xillia to finally get released.

So yeah, I'll just have to stay fabulous till then

Call your self a jrpg fan, you have not lived until you have played the tales of series. Its one of the largest jrpg franchises around, and with good reason. Many jrpg's now a days are into trying things new, keeping up with the normal trend of video game mechanics, staying closer to the main stream in the gaming industry. Developers are just all into innovation, reaching new levels of fidelity and graphic prowess with their new powerful game engines.

The tales of franchise is one such series that retains the original classical roots which make many jrpgs so popular in the first place, all well innovating their game mechanics with new idea's, but the games them self do not suffer from less story, more graphic, detail, that sort of thing like alot of new gen jrpgs are in this generation have.

One of things i really appeciate bout the series is that even in the newest games of the franchise this gen, they are still running stronger then ever, the script, stories, over world travel. Many of the classical elements of the past generation of jrpgs are still their, they don't sacrifice, they know what true jrpg fans want and so they deliver.

Final fantasy is such an example where the company of SE just tried to stay to mainstream to the rest of the games, and lost all of those classical roots that the series was so popular in the first place to behind with, they have downstreamed many of the newer games and created them more like action games, rather then a japanese role playing because of it being kind of a niche genre in the gaming industry.

Anyways, the short answer is yes its so worth it, one of the best video game franchises out their if your a fan of true jrpgs from the golden era of the ps/ps2, etc.

Now as far as which game to play, if you want the best experience possible as far as characters, story, dialogue choice, i would go with tales of symphonia, alot of people might tell you that anyone who is a tales of fan knows this game is just a critically acclaimed masterpiece amongst fans and what many believe to be the best in the entire series. In fact just recently every tales gamers dream came true when they announced they would be creating a remake of this game and the sequal "dawn of the new world" on the ps3 with enhanced visuals. Going to be titled "tales of chronicles" but if you want to wait for that you can, but i would check out the gamecube version.

Other great tales of games are tales of abyss for the ps2, tales of vesperia for the xbox 360, and of course the huge popular and sucessful game tales of graces F for the ps3. You will also want to pre order tales of Xillia, coming to the ps3 very soon, japan sales rating rated this game the highest out of all of the tales games in the franchise, so i am very very excited to see what they did with tales of xillia and reason it was such a huge success, it was great enough for the company to create even a sequal to that one tales of xillia 2, which many people are saying is the greatest tales game today.

Their are other tales games that are spin off's like the tales of world series, or the tales of radiant mythology, i would avoid those. I would stick to the main series of games right now, true hardcore enthusiasts might like the spin off titles but for someone just getting into the franchise you can't go wrong with tales of huge hits like TOS, TOV and TOGF.

Some other tales games like "Legendia" wasn't that much of a huge success as the other ones, i have played it though, its good, it has interesting character stories, but i think people didn't really care for the change up in the battle mechanics in that game.

Then of course their is the old classical's, which started it all, tales of phantasia, tales of eternia, tales of destiny which are all good, but keep in mind those are old school, very retro, if your not a fan of retro games, or real old classics and want something with voiced dialogue, i would start with TOS.

None of the games actually connect to each other in the main series, so you can start with any one of the, their are a few who have sequals which are TOS and TOZ, because of their huge worldwide popular success.
