Samsung refrigerators in the US is putting ads on the fridges for the first time, per the Verge.

Samsung is calling it a pilot program for now, that they say is meant to “strengthen the value” of owning a Samsung smart fridge.

We don't have flying cars, but you can spend 3000 dollars so that when you are getting a snack naked at midnight you can listen to ads.

Apparently you earn credit when the ads are running and you can use that to get free wallpapers for your fridge computer instead of paying $2.99 for a starry space-themed wallpaper from Samsung’s official store.

Wow, not surprising I guess. Come to think of it I just hung up a refrigerator magnet with the Dr pepper logo on it, I think I'm doing commercialism unknowingly! :O

It's what the American market wants, so I shouldn't be that surprised about it.

Just wait until they come out with fridges that won't open until after you view their ads a certain length of time, effectively holding your food hostage. Even if that never happens, only a total chump would buy a fridge with ads on it...

No...? Practically no consumers want fridges with video ads.

(Of course, plenty of companies and advertisers would love another revenue stream, but that's missing the point.)

I don't know. Consider that Americans in general have a huge love and respect for advertisements, I think it's what the wise American market analysts concluded.

I'm going to need to see evidence of all these people who want to see video ads on their fridges. Until then, it's speculation.

If there are market analysts making "conclusions" (more likely guesses) on the matter, that just shows how oblivious they are. If they talked to real, regular people, just about any of them would say they don't want video ads on their fridge doors.

Adblockers are wildly popular, so I wouldn't say we're crazy about ads. The only ads I particularly like are ones related to certain things I already want; the type of ads I would generally seek out rather than stumbling upon. Even when I had a career in marketing, ads annoyed me to no end.

So, will there be more expensive ad-free versions?

I think this is more accurate and I agree with you that the American market researchers are having this in-your-face quality (a stereotype in the market researching sector globally) and this is concerning.

Personal story. I'm close friends with a paper-pusher Chaoxian (ethnic Korean from Northeastern China, they talk like rural North Koreans) lady working for the South Korean office of Kantar TNS. Perhaps this might be true according to my friend. I guess what she implied is that those American market analysts are too proud and self-absorbed while the average American consumers are looking line "Guinea pigs" for many bad marketing approaches these days.

The only thing in my home that connects to the internet will be my PC and phone, because those I specifically have around to use the internet!

1000% agreed.

Also, subscriptions. Only things I'm subbing to are online. If I have to pay a monthly subscription to use hardware then that company can get lost

Not surprising. It was a matter of time. "Smart fridges" with a screen, Internet connection, interactive apps? I'm surprised that it did not happen earlier, to be fair. ;D

Good ol' late stage capitalism at it again. The 2nd gen version will not open the door unless you make a dozen twitter posts about how billionaires are gods and you shoot a union member.

The pinnacle accomplishment of capitalism is ads, subscriptions, and idiots who pay for that shit (a.k.a. highly qualified consumers).

On computers one could just get free wallpapers so I view that as a scam. I do not want a screen on my fridge.

Cyberpunk dystopia is getting closer every day.

Btw i never understood this dreams of "flying cars".

I mean, why someone need it?

Its enough that they drive everywhere but they will also fly?
Please no.

In a good version of future there should be no cars or at least it should be minimum of them.

@Exhumatika really, capitalism is terrible!
Socialism is much better - no ads because no food and only one type of refrigerator, which you have to wait in line for a year to get.

No, National Bolshevism is the future.

Left-wingers or Right-wingers are all identical shit when it comes to real political practice, and Centrists are just fucking inepts.
