Most of the time, you can tell when someone is going to die. We start getting flashbacks, it’s near the end of the series, or there’s just no realistic way for them to survive a fight.

But sometimes, a death comes out of nowhere you didn’t expect it at all and barely had time to process what just happened.

So, what anime death shocked you the most? I’m talking about the ones you truly didn’t see coming until the moment it actually happened.

Second question: do you prefer it when you can tell a character is going to die, or when it’s completely unexpected?

(Please put your answers in spoiler tags—except for the anime title—so people who haven’t seen the show don’t get spoiled!)

There’s a few I can think of
Attack On Titan

Jujutsu Kaisen (series 1)

My Hero Academia

One Piece, Demon Slayer

Death Note

As for if I prefer being able to tell if a character is going to die: not at all. Just like in real life, you never know what’s around the corner. I want to feel the same shock as the other characters but I don’t want the death to be of no importance plot-wise.

Character death needs to be handled with care, since if it’s done sloppily (Demon Slayer, near the end), it loses all impact and value to the plot. The reader becomes desensitised to it.It should never be done for mere shock and actually have a significant bearing on the plot. The AOT example (first one)
is a poor demonstration of this. I get why it was done, but a less important character could have been in that spot and it would still work.

If a character dies, I want to feel the same kind of grief the characters who survive are going through. My Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece examples made me feel loss and grief for what might have been, demonstrated through the anguish of Yuji and Luffy respectively. They were powerful scenes, ones that stick with me. That’s what makes a good character death.

Technically a manga death because the anime hasn't adapted to this point yet but

Some of you never watched Bakugan Battle Brawlers on TeleToon in 2008 and it shows.

I say the death of Sayaka Miki was most disturbing (she turned into a witch).

Actually the ones in anime I really didn't expect something so serious are the most shocking.

Death Note

I admit i'm a little biased, women characters i tend to be more empathetic towards...maybe i'm weird but i don't like seeing female characters getting hurt in anime
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

A death of that kind and gentle captain in Soul Society arc in Bleach, he was so nice to Hinamori. I wish he survived.

Now without jokes, tbh I don't know, maybe I would choose Devilman Crybaby as the final episodes were a ride and I didn't expect it to go that way. As with many titles I just felt that something is coming to a certain character.

@Jakkun I'm not surprised by that, just disappointed that Sunrise decided to milk Code Geass after such an iconic ending, which crippled its reputation.

@Zarutaku And still not as shocking as when Detective Conan is machine-gunned down in that gang shootout in episode one. Show never really recovered after that.

The ENTIRE cast of Akame ga Kill in the Anime' & the way the final episode treated them. What a 180. Only Akame survives & Night Raid is only remembered as criminals & murderers while they actually helped START the revolution? WTF?? I hated this show after this.

Himeno senpai from chainsaw_man, I think she really wanted to go if you know what I mean, tired of being a hero and pretending to be strong and making it appear as if everything was fine.

@Sheol01 I was going to mention this too. Sure, there are other shocking, painful, and dramatic deaths in other anime I like much more. But to this day, I still can't get over the fact they killed for no reason, by a balding fat guy nonetheless, just to end things. I watched it when, in like middle school? I am still mad.
"Chimp in state of nature never jerks off, but in captivity he does, wat does this mean? In state of nature he’s too busy, to put plainly. He is concerned with mastering space: solving problem of life in and under trees, mastering what tools he can, mastering social relations in the jockeying for power and status. Deprived of this drive to development and self-increase he devolves to pointless masturbation, in captivity, where he senses he is in owned space and therefore the futility of all his efforts and all his actions."
