TL;DR, Shinichiro Watanabe is getting involved with the upcoming 2025 video game "Ghost of Yotei". He made some lo-fi tracks you can listen to while playing the game. This mode will be called "Watanabe Mode" and it'll be like the music from Samurai Champloo.

I'm so sad that I can't get any of the Ghost games (since I don't have a PS) but that's awesome news.

No. The MC VA is a Hollywood SJW and she deserves zero dollars whatsoever, plus Sucker Punch is American and I don't trust American games at all anymore. And in case they turn out good it honestly feels more like the exception rather than the rule. The only studios that I think are capable of touching upon progressive topics in a tasteful manner and making well-rounded female characters are the East Asians.
Plus Watanabe dropped off HARD in the days since Space Dandy.

There’s also buzz about a Ghost of Tsushima movie and potential spinoffs expanding the universe. So who knows, Atsu might end up animated someday.

I dig that. I just wish there were more "samurai + hip hop" titles in general, for anime, gaming or whatever. That mix worked so well for Champloo and Afro Samurai.

It'd be great if people get to discover the samurai/lo-fi aesthetic and maybe even the anime itself.

But the grumpy old me is thinking this is nothing more than a marketing stunt. Is Watanabe really nothing more than his soundtrack? Even if you think "yes," the move feels really shallow and almost cynical.

They're also adding a Kurosawa mode and a Miike mode. "It's called Kurosawa mode, you see, because he made those black-and-white movies, you see. Very unique, what a legend." But it's just a black-and-white mode... They even said they "worked with the Kurosawa estate," which I interpret it as paying his descendants just to slap his name on an Easter Egg.

(For the record I loved the first game, and really tempted to pick up a PS5 this Christmas for the sequel)

@nyugvo6 If you care to know, it seems to be an optional mode that you can turn on from the menu. The actual soundtrack seems to be orchestral/traditional Japanese.

They already implied that they are making this game out of spite towards main target audience. Can't wait not to buy it.

So you don't play many Western games, is what you are telling me. I am playing Rogue Trader, right now and there aren't a lot of anime characters that have come out in the last few years that I would be taking over it's female cast.

@Deathko Honestly just seeing go woke go broke in action is always going to be great. Virtue signalers deserve it.

@BilboBaggins365 I do but I refuse to buy them day 1. Never again given how bad the Western games industry is right now.

Bad relative to when? I think it's fine. Owlcat and Larian have effectively replaced Bioware and Bethesda, leading the charge of WRPGs. CD recovered after 2077's bad launch, and gave a final product that was very good. The strategy market, the main kind of game I play is barely touched by Japan or really any Asian game market, and they are doing a good job keeping me addicted to colony management games and GSG games, retro shooters are doing great, even the adventure VN market is doing fine. Just because there are some botched AAA releases, and predatory pricing decisions doesn't mean everything is in bad shape (predatory pricing is something you can easily apply to games coming out of Asia too).

Personally the only games I ever will buy day 1 those that I want to see financially succeed, which are very rare. I always wait for a sale in most cases.

Until they don't go broke....It's pretty arrogant to always assume your world view is in the right, and will naturally succeed, and those that go against it will naturally fail. Tons of media I don't like is plenty popular.

Erika Ishii being an activist doesn't mean anything. Leonardo DiCaprio is also an activist, did that ruin any of the movies he starred in? Mark Ruffalo (the actor for the MCU's Hulk) is also an activist, but that didn't ruin any of the MCU movies he starred in.

"Go woke go broke" is falling apart as well, given the new Superman movie was extremely successful.

I don't think we're getting a new Lazarus season if I'm being honest. I don't see what the story would be like now that Skinner was found.

After the failure of Lazarus, it is clear that Shinichiro Watanabe is a shell of his former self. He needs to retire before he embarrasses himself even further.

>makes less than 2x the budget
Yeah, that ain't "successful". Success in terms of Hollywood goes WAY MORE than just making your budget back. You have to make back the advertisement money as well as tons of other secondary expenses too.
Superman is a box office bomb through and through.

In regards to Erika and Leo or Mark, they're completely different in how they espouse their values. See, Leo is more of an old-school type of actor - he engages in the kind of activism that helps people, and kept it out of his roles. Mark too, he kept the politics out of his roles and never berated his audience that may bear opposing views.

Erika is no legit activist who can keep her activism separate from acting, she's a third wave feminist with a penchant for hating on her own culture and rewriting it to fit the post-modern zeitgeist that's out of date by 5 or so years, and is absolutely the kind of activist actor that hates the audience. Well ta-ta, no money for you.

Superman is currently at 400 million in the box office (despite it only being around 2 weeks since the movie released), meanwhile their budget was just 55 million. Not to mention how both audiences and critics praise the movie.

Erika Ishii is an activist for the LGBTQ community, not a “fake activist”. Also, when did Erika “put politics into her roles” especially with Atsu?

I personally am not that invested in her, but she gets way too much hate from people online. Especially for reasons that don’t even make sense. A lot of it is just speculation, which doesn’t even make sense from what we’ve seen so far.

Most people are excited for Ghost of Yotei anyways.

I just watched the newest State of Play on this game and man, it looks good. I loved the first one and it's been long enough since it where I'm down for another. I kinda love the idea of just making this an anthology franchise and there's just a new "Ghost of ..." every few years. Honestly the Watanabe inclusion doesn't really do much for me. When I saw that part my reaction was more of just a chuckle and "sure, why not". I'm all here for these extra modes they are adding it even if I'll probably never touch them. Game is looking really cool. I was aware of it, but it wasn't really on my radar until that recent showcase and now I'm pumped for October when it's supposed to come out.

If we were to get a sequel to this I think it’ll be set in Meiji Restoration or the Bakumatsu period. I’m open for both.
