Why do non-mecha fans care if mecha is "dead"?

Genuinely. A lot of the time, When I talk about mecha shows with people, the ones who say "mecha is dead anyways" are people who clearly do not care about the genre in the least, like they've never actually watched one, or are only aware of the "big in the west" stuff like Eva and Gundam.

When I talk to actual mecha fans, it just.. doesn't come up, because there are still one or two solid mecha shows each year (and a couple bad ones), but whenever one catches the ear of the masses, the discussion of if it'll "revive mecha" happen all over again.

I don't consider myself a mecha fan but the genres is neither dead or trending like it used to be.

Even if you never cared for chrome and cockpit layouts, the fall of mecha feels like watching a veteran retire while gacha games and Light novels villainess and truck isekai gobble up the mainstream

It will never ever happen. The industry loves CGI too much. New anime fans love cgi.

I think the ONLY good mecha I've seen with cgi is Aquarion Evol and Zegapain.

The issue is mecha takes too much effort. Median age of Japan is 50. The industry is going to stagnate without youth at the helm

no matter who says its "dead"....anime like gundam will always be the back bone & have legendary status in the medium no matter what some sweaty moe/cgdct beta cuck-tard soy-drinker noob says lol ..zoomers have such shit taste its almost a parody and joke at this point, let them watch their dog shit dandadan & k-on or frieren or whatever

Probably because most of the mecha classics are from a different era in all mediums except for video games where Fromsoft recently had a success with Armored Core 6. You still get the occasional struggling mecha anime or a VN or manga made with pure passion for the genre but aside from that the genre is sadly dead compared to other ones who deserved the spotlight less

Well i gotta say that Mecha genre is not for everyone, i noticed that the new generation is the most one that hates Mecha animes, unlike old generation who actually know the value of 90s mecha anime like evangelion, gundam, grendizer etc.

In 90 80 2000 s this genre was so popular, like you can say it was the trend in this period, they also mix the philosophy politic topics to the animes so they looked more deep and mature, but now this trend got outmoded because the idea of "Mecha" looks weird for people who didnt live in this period, it becomes old but doesnt means its dead, because some animes can be watched and enjoyable nowdays for people who are interested in this type of animes.

something dead means cant have an influence in the present, but for me i see that everyone can enjoy watching mecha and still possible to get more fans for this type, like lterally.

@ItachiDeltaForce USA anime fans def loved mecha.

I believe it was the AoT tourists. Or even a bit earlier that didn't.

Look at Toonami and AS lineup. Eureka 7, Evangelion, Geass, Gundam Seed, Gundam Wing, IGPX, 8th MS. G Gundam, Zoids, etc

@NS2D Comparison is the killer of motivation, but there are still some serious giants for Mecha anime being made, at least in quality if not popularity. Grendizer U, while... fishy in origin, had some serious production value, Bravern was amazing, the Eva Rebuilds were amazing (if weird, but also it's Eva).

Yeah, there is some truth to that. Old -school mechanical animation was effectively it's own artform within the animation industry, one that's just a lot harder to keep alive in an industry that makes anime at a mass-consumption pace, favoring all sorts of time-saver animation and CGI (Though I have seen a fair bit of promise from CGI mecha in recent years. The lack of the hand-drawn feel breaks my heart, but I also don't like animators being in sweatshops).

@NS2D I've only heard stories about Muv-Luv. They aren't good stories by any means, but what I can say is that Bravern was an original anime story, so there's that. Grendizer U looks cool, but uh... I feel like it lacks the "spirit" of other versions of the story.

@Timeline_man The Muv Luv anime was rushed, would recommend the VN over anime. Should have chosen Imagawa not Fukuda if they wanted to keep the spirit of Grendizer.

It's an unconscious appeal to authority: "Mecha anime is not extremely popular/abundant now, so it must have been a fad and not worth watching".
It would be more appropriate to say that mecha is niche.

The amount of mecha that interests me, that comes out on average is incredibly tiny, I wouldn't say the genre is healthy personally. Sci Fi in general is in a pretty bad place, and has been for quite awhile. We could use an actual "revival". In the previous decades, mecha were some of the best shows coming out, it dominated the industry, and that just isn't the case right now. Most mecha fans I have talked to tend to be pretty pessimistic on modern anime.

It has good war dramas, fun space operas, or hits on a variety of other genres from yeah super hero esque stuff to buddy cop comedies. Anime fans who deprive themselves of that genre, are cutting out probably one of the more consistently good genres in this medium, in my opinion. Maybe you should actually watch some. If not well your loss. Frankly how anime fans have neglected sci fi and genres like mecha, is one of the reasons why I have pulled away from the medium in the past. My interests, don't reflect the interests of your average fan and I know that, and i am just going to go to where that is being catered.

Hathaway's Flash was good, even if it's not as good as the crisp 80s animation, i didn't mind Votoms CGI. I thought 86 was acceptable as well. It's preferable to no mecha.

Probably for the audience there. The reality is sci fi in general went down the drain, it's not even just entirely restricted to anime, though healthier elsewhere. I think we will see a revival eventually, social conditions and current events will motivate it, even for escapism.

There are still a lot of people in the country before depopulation does hit them hard, which yeah I mean it's going to hurt, and we don't know the extent of the damage population decline, can do to modern societies, or if tech can offset it. For creative industries, it won't be great. Still the industry is already relying a lot on foreign talent, and in desperation I could see them reaching out and trying to train more to sustain it. That or global industries will just come and buy things up for brand recognition, which who knows how that will go.

It's not about being a mecha fan or not, it's about how much you know about the current era of anime.

I don't care much about mecha, but I know that new mecha anime keep coming out every year; I just don't expect that the average anime fan would know about the existence of lesser known recent mecha like Yuuki Bakuhatsu Bang Bravern or Back Arrow. For most people the last relevant new IP of mecha anime was Darling in the Franxx (86 is technically mecha, but it doesn't have your typical humanoid mechas).

@ComeInReiAsuka I dropped Bang Bravern after one episode but a lot of people loved it, maybe I should give it another try.

Back Arrow is indeed ugly as sin, which is a shame because you could feel it was written by the same author of Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill.

@ItachiDeltaForce go back on earth now you are in delusional full force. Mecha has technically die out because the animators who were able to do got into retirement or died and actually few were able to pass their skills. Reason why Gundam is still made its because sunrise form themselves their animators but Gundam alone is proof that the genre died out same as Mahou Shoujo. Entertainment is cyclical trend fade and are replaced almost every decade. To quote you a "true anime fan would know that".

People say things like mecha is dead I think as a way to justify not watching a huge amount of really good anime that exists and put it in a "it's not for me and it wouldn't matter if it was since mecha is dead" box in their head. however well animated 2D mechs definitely are hard to do and are much rarer now just on a cost basis against CG. in the last few years there have been plenty of very good mecha anime honestly people somehow try to see every single one of these as an exception to a rule lol.

I don't have a horse in the race, but my theory is they're just want to shut the conversation down to talk about what they like, as well offer an excuse for not watching any. No see, they don't watch Mecha bc they just don't like it (a valid reason to not watch something) , they don't watch it because it's OLD and IRRELEVANT.

Though, I think those speculating it reviving mecha are possibly not malicious, just clueless and out of the loop. Like someone genuinely surprised hearing an 80's rockstar is still alive, even though they been doing stuff consistently the last 40 years. It just didn't ping on their radar.

@trinitroglycerin Uh... Power Rangers is also Japanese, it's called "Super Sentai", but also mecha is very capable of handing some serious subject matter like war, self-identity, what it means to become an adult, nature vs Nurture arguments of humanity, The concepts of evolution and progress.

The story of Muv-Luv as a franchise as a whole is just a sad story of repeated dumb financial decisions and missed opportunities. Instead of becoming a known name like Clannad and Fate it became irrelevant and forgotten

I've probably missed out on a lot of the more recent mech stories. When I think of an original mecha anime I think of things like Kyoukai Senki, Argevollen, Captain Earth, and Buddy Complex rather than the actually good examples such as Kakumeiki Valvrave and Suisei no Gargantia

SPTLayzner said:

Not only is it rushed, it also ruins the entire story for anyone unfortunate enough to get into the franchise through that anime. I think that if Muv-Luv Extra had an anime adaptation around the time when a lot of the Key VNs got released and it got two 24 episode seasons it would've been loved. And then years later around the time when Attack on Titan came out they released a Muv-Luv Unlimited anime. It would've gotten multiple seasons and everyone would've looked forward to the final chapter: Muv-Luv Alternative

Mecha clearly isn't in the spotlight like it used to be and people who were never into it to begin with use that as an excuse to dismiss the genre. There are still new mecha shows coming out so it's not dead in the sense that it's only a thing of the past, just in the sense that it's not as prevalent as it used to be. To active fans of the genre they won't view it as dead because they're aware of the ones coming out.

@zombie_pegasus this is pretty accurate ....the trend may be dead, but the genre will never die its just taking a back seat ....will refresh, reinvigorate for the right generation and era again...... & things will just click

who knows ..maybe when a generation comes along from the last they will have more masculine energy be less pussies & weak and have more testosterone/libido bc the males in this current gen do not have an ounce of it.

zoomers & young millenials need to stop drinking the soy & eat more protein

i might also add that mecha/sci fi was in the midst of the golden age of anime

You're the one that made it political. You know exactly what it meant when you used those worlds.

And people on the opposite side of liberals tend to like the shows you just insulted. A lot of liberals prefer mainstream Shounen and Seinen, and a decent amount of them also like Shoujo.

I haven't actually looked the staff. Remakes can be great however, it's rare for them to be better than the original. That is something hard to get excited for.

I am not saying again you get nothing, I am just saying what you get is very small. Like think about what your average battle shonen, rom com or isekai fan gets. For me, I have to be content, that Gundam is kinda consistent and maybe something else that is new every few years. It's just not where it used to be. I mean I know why that is (mecha is hard to make, and the audience isn't there); however, that is kinda unfortunate.

Magic Knight Rayearth is getting a remake.

@BilboBaggins365 I know it's not there. I was just suggesting that they could remake or actually adapt some sci-fi series. I'd give examples of mecha, but I'm not very familiar with mecha that hasn't been adapted. I only know of some sci-fi that hasn't been adapted or fully adapted. One that I really liked was Please Save My Earth.

mecha is still very much alive and well in Japan and always will be

no matter who says its "dead"....anime like gundam will always be the back bone & have legendary status in the medium no matter what some sweaty moe/cgdct beta cuck-tard soy-drinker noob says lol ..zoomers have such shit taste its almost a parody and joke at this point, let them watch their dog shit dandadan & k-on or frieren or whatever

mecha will never die its the roots of anime..same with combat shonan........ a true anime fan would know that

@LuxuriousHeart I honestly would just want new mecha originals from Sunrise or something.

It's mainly newer anime fans who hate Mecha.
