These teens trying to take care of a cat is an adorable thing to see. Episode is fine imo although this one is the most tame one out of all them so far. Almost felt like a slice of life type episode.

But good to know this show continues to explore how these characters spend their time when not surrounded by mysteries.

They adapted one hell of a smart cat!

The C part about rock paper scissors was also interesting.

I was wondering what was going on when the end credits began rolling and the main body of the episode came to a close far earlier than normal, in terms of what we were in for in the way of an extended post-credits segment.

This series is no Hyouka, but I've found it comfy and mildly informative. It's nice to see characters you could easily have been given the impression were intended as one-offs or very rare appearances after their initial introductory episode, and the late 1940s period setting just gives this one a certain flair and intrigue that the modern-day-set amateur/junior school detective ones which feel a lot closer/more familiar to our world/time just lack.

Even with the small-scale often relatively low-stakes mysteries on offer here though, I still don't think it's mastered the art of dissecting and dramatizing the mundane to the hilt in the way like Hyouka perfected.

But I enjoyed this episode for being even more carefree and SoL-esque than usual. I wasn't just charmed by the reappearance of the lovely and bewitching Atsuko Chuzenji.

I wonder if the series could look at the western influence post WW2 for some of the life issues and American influence on the culture.

that is a curious looking tabby coat Pomegranate has for a Manx. the tabby stripes are too thick for the Mackerel (thin stripes), too linear for the Classic (swirling patterns), and they're too solid for the Spotted variety. it also seems to have the stumpy tail type. Manx cats have four different styles of tails: Rumpy (no tail), Rumpy Riser (a little bulge resembling a small tail), Stumpy (a stub of a tail), and Longy (an almost full-length tail). plus, what in the hell was that cat getting into to be THAT filthy? the wooden washbasin of water turned from clear to full-on opaque BROWN! what was it trying to disguise itself as? a clump of mud? a rock? a patch of bare dirt? heh, i've never met a cat that would allow itself to get that filthy. :O
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

This anime portrays 1948 as peaceful, so it’s definitely taking creative liberties.1948 Japan was anything but peaceful and prosperous. Japan was a nation still grappling with the aftermath of war, Cities were in ruins, industries were struggling, and food shortages were widespread. Crime rates surged, black markets thrived, and people were desperate. There was Outbreaks of diseases like Tb, cholera were rampant.
Man this this anime, turning even the most turbulent eras into settings for gourmet meals for cat, whimsical mysteries, with cheerful school girls and eccentric characters.

Also that’s some next-level philosophical shit Chuzenji-sensei turning rock-paper-scissors into a reflection of divine trinity concepts from Christianity and Hinduism.

Amazing, a mystery that Kana isn't at the center of for once. The cat is quite the character too. I hope we get to see more of it.

@RainyEvenings I can only assume that the setting is a part of Tokyo that was somehow spared the worst of the war such as the firebombing the devastated so much of Tokyo and hence it is relatively well off in comparison. That or it is a light-hearted show that doesn't need those heavy elements impinging on the slice-of-life vibe.

I'm amazed at how calmly they discuss the idea of a new Taro's gesture, considering the guy was just trying to cheat with a universal gesture. Also, Kusakabe has only been to the teacher's house once, but she already comes there as easily as the childhood friend of the school harem protagonist.

@RainyEvenings You can say that about half of Europe and Asia after the war. The only difference is that some won and others lost. For example, my country won, but in my city there were only 3 houses of the original urban development left intact after the lifting of the German occupation.

This episode was fun and chill. Although I will say the structure (or lack thereof) was jarring.

I did like the introduction of Pomegrenate; he's a cute little guy!

This episode was rather different from the usual ones. It's true that they touched on the supernatural aspect of the show with the introduction of the cat, Pomegranate and linking it to the monster cat.

The cat intrigues me though, as it almost feels like it can understand them, responding in its own way and showing interesting reactions.

Well, I would still say that the rock-paper-scissors segment was the most out-of-place part of the whole series, as they produced the solution to the boy Toro's problem instead of solving a mystery itself.

The case of a stray cat, which brings forth the attention of Kanna to bring it to Chuzenji's place and give it a rinse, opts to help them find Chizuko's hand mirror, which was just behind a closet. A kinka-byo monster cat as Chuzenji sums up, his family accepts it quite fervently though, and even gives it a name: Pomegranate.

Chuzenji being brought forth a bag from Isama, only for that bag to attract a stalker, which it's rune mark belong into a Tohko Kohinata after being stolen by her ex-husband. And that bag being valuable to her, the cash in it is only worth it to get this simple matter resolved. And all this while, all he wanted was just a pet bowl for Pomegranate.

Sekiguchi taking care of Pomegranate is one thing, but him sharing the story from Yukie of this boy Taro playing rock, paper, scissors his way, rather than just dismissing it, teaching him a way on how to play it better, it sure doesn't make sense, but is just fiction for a classic type.

The cat is still important in this context...

There is a cat. Already 10/10. Chuuzenji was the one who clearly told they would not keep cats but the cat decided to sit on his lap. Cats just know haha. He would be unable to refuse because Chizuko already named the cat. A foster fail (yay)
