I like the action, but there's some embedded politickal elements that you may or may not like.

What's with Theresa May as US President doing there?

I can safely ignore these if the action keeps my attention.

This anime draws strongly from religious symbolism. Its name, Lazarus, might suggest a reference to the biblical character of Lazarus of Bethany who was allegedly resurrected by Jesus. For Christians this figure symbolizes hope and salvation, but in my view anime in general struggles when portraying Christian symbolism, so I don't have high hopes in this particular work.

Here's my two cents on this one.

Strengths:

  • The visuals and animation are impressive. The line art is bold. The color palette is saturated and dark in tone, the ambiance is dark, urban, and apocalyptic. All this makes for a cyberpunk and typically masculine art style. Structural, architectural, and vehicular designs stand out to me.
  • It's rich in religious and philosophical themes and symbolism, which can add nuance and complexity to the story, but how good this is depends on how good it is developed, but it is intriguing nonetheless.

Weaknesses:

  • The dialogue is simplistic and feels very dumbed down outside of characters representing bosses and government figures, which is atypical.
  • Some animation sequences seem exaggerated and inconsistent. For example, during the prison breakout the character is seen seemingly jumping over two meters vertically, on the same spot, to grab a prison guard by the hair and jump over him (a superhuman ability). However, seconds later, he had to help himself with a much lower guardrail to scale another obstacle. These nonsensical inconsistencies make the animation look silly and cartoonish sometimes, as if gravity did not always apply to the main character.
  • The choice of making the character being easily captured by the seducing acts of a woman is extremely stereotypical and was an eye-roll moment, it looks like lazy writing.

Neutral:

  • The art and the animation looks good, but I was left wishing for more detailed line artwork. The line art is very bold, and it does not allow for complex details or depth (lines representing arm hairs are as thick as those representing torsos), which is not of my taste, and combined with a lack of complex dialogue makes the characters look schematic. This is just my subjective opinion.

Overall, impressive visuals, the story revolves around themes of social conformity, the human condition, and scientists playing god, but I think any philosophical ambitions behind this will struggle to develop due to its simplistic dialogue. The drug mentioned, Hapna, echoes the fictional drug Soma in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, but I don't think these elements are going to be fully explored due to the shallow character interactions.

The highlight of this episode to me was the scene where the character is cornered on a rooftop by the predictions of the supercomputer. The character is able to escape by making a bold, risky move that I think echoes, metaphorically, real world dynamics between humans and artificial intelligence players in tabletop games, where human players win by surprising the AI with an unexpected "divine move". But if this was the intended meaning behind this scene then it was made in a very obscure way.

I liked the flying pigeon CGI in this same scene.

Now that the Japanese is out it's actually watchable and fantastic. The English dub was awful ;D. I refused to watch it until Japanese was out and it was worth the wait. The english dub is actually criminal.

Great action sequences, Axel escaping around the city was cool. This anime starts with a strong and interesting plot, I hope it develops well, especially Skinner’s actions. Good music and character design.

hmm. Im feeling very conflicted, because the general concept of the show is quite interesting. But after watching ep 1, im not so sure

The first episode was just a fast-paced chase scene, showing off the animation style, which i actually dislike... Something about the drastic difference between items in a scene and the humans in the scene is uncanny. They don't appear to exist in the same reality. I know Lazarus isnt the only anime to do this, but it somehow feels like the animators spent 90% of their time doing backgrounds, and 10% on the animation and humans. it completely takes me out of the "anime world" and makes me think "im watching very poorly done animation.
" I understand a lot of anime do this, but there are specific scenes where proportions look off (the head of that lady in green), the hands of a reporter. the reporter while speaking? the mc doing parkour the list goes on. (Im not saying its AI, but... when there is such a drastic difference between the humans and the object, and how they are animated. it looks bad, intentionally bad.)

Anyways. the dub was bad. glad i could find it in sub.

I'm also confused on the religious imagery in the beginning scenes. Its all alluding to the Abrahamic religions. of course, there is the dreidel from Judaism, and then a woman wearing a headcovering, im assuming representing Islam, and then I had to google Lazarus, from the Christian bible. idrk.

The anime seems to also be focusing exclusively on the american audience? with the setting being in america and all... and all the american producers and it being on adult-swim and not like.. crunchy role or whatever....

This anime is SO cool bro the parkour scenes were amazing to look at and the story is actually really interesting to me, I wonder how they’re gonna find the cure for Hapna in 29 days? And yo Dr. Skinner is a bitch ass nigga for developing a pain killer which would mutate into an incurable disease after 3 years of laying dormant inside one’s body, this nigga really did humanity dirty bc he didn’t like some humans act in society🤦🏽‍♂️😭😭😭😭😭

Eleina is the finest girl in the show she’s SO hot and cute at the same time, like she was hella cute when she was crouching hiding behind the chair when Axel woke up💀

MAPPA's never disappoints with the animation man, and the fact that they were working with Shinichiro Watanabe is fucking amazing and i can't believe that this story takes place in the same world as Cowboy Bebop like i love everything about this show already man😫

Overall this was a solid episode and a solid storyline that had me hooked in the first 5 minutes i can’t wait to see how this story ends🤩🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

The premise of the show is pretty straightforward and easy to follow, and MAPPA delivered some incredible sakuga this season. I’m really looking forward to following this series. Does the ending hint that our guy didn’t take the drug at all, and might actually be humanity’s last hope even though he’s extremely suicidal?

Okay episode. Gilberto is a little irritating at the moment, looking forward to the character development. There were times the parkour didn't look all that solid, leaving Gilberto out of place with the environment. Interested to learn more about Dr. Skinner and his goals around Hapna so far.

Like the MC Axel and what the fuck, this dude is like a pakour god. He is like a mixture between Spike and Mugen and i like that.
Like the other characters as well, the black guy looks interesting a bit similar to Tosen, i think so anyway.

I was trying to figure out what was off about the visuals, and this explains it. While the movement is pretty cool, as well as the camera work, there's something that doesn't mesh with the character designs.

Also, this was a great write-up. I appreciate you taking the time to post it.

This episode was stylized like a Western action movie. It felt like all of the camerawork was taken from MCU and James Bond films. Still, it looked cool. As the episode wore on, though, I got a bit bored with the parkour because it felt like story was at a standstill. I wish more development were given to the other characters. Kind of eyerolling the obvious sexual tension that will emerge. However, visually fun to look at, mostly good soundtrack (it went a bit trancelike during a parkour scene, perhaps contributing to my boredom).

Hopefully the plot won't be as predictable as it feels like from this episode.

This anime looks like a tryhard copy of Cowboy Bebop.

I can see how hard they're trying to make the prisoner look Cool and Swag and Super Cool - and did I mention - Super Swag? Nobody that's cool tries to look cool. Spike certainly had no need for it and that's why he's a legend. Spike 2 is trying so hard and it's actually a little bit sad.

The animation is clean, sure - but there's literally been no plot to back it up (I feel like it can be summed up in three rather short sentences), the English VAs talk like they're all dead inside and the Japanese ones simply don't fit the way the characters are supposed to act. (The lawyer+hitman woman looks mature but sounds like she's voiced by a teenager as just one example.)

None of this makes sense at all, either. Why would this supposedly peaceful guy become an evil mastermind? I know I'm supposed to be hooked - but that's laughable. The show has literally told me two things about this character - and they go directly against each other. Great work, really.

"The human race has to die because they have to atone for their sins." - Projection much??

Since these guys are clearly trying to make Cowboy Bebop 2 without the whole cool cosmos stuff - why push any sort of crazy deadline on the characters at all? The crew worked because they did what they wanted! They worked odd jobs that mostly closed within the episode - and had clean, actually thought-out plots - something the creators might have forgotten about.

I remember the first episode of Cowboy Bebop even though I've watched it years ago. It was an amazing start to an amazing show. There wasn't fifty thousand lacklustre characters shoved into my face. The idea of the show was simple and lovable and chill. This seems like a wreck waiting to happen.

If there truly is only thirty days left for them to find the guy, why the hell are they all wasting one to find Spike 2? Why am I supposed to find Spike 2 worth it or cool or Super Swag if he let himself get caught... supposedly multiple times? Why am I supposed to be impressed that he's waited until the pilot to escape? Did he know about the plot of the anime? Because he sure made it sound like he's been waiting for a while.

They didn't even bother to introduce any of the characters, either. At this point, I know that the woman likes cats, that the boy doesn't like maths (boo fucking hoo lol, who gives a shit), that there's a businesswoman-preteen-girl that has prematurely aged and dresses like a grandma, that Spike 2 likes to rot in prison when he really doesn't need to, and that black guy likes to look cool while endlessly driving around the city, getting nowhere. (Is he lost?? I'm a bit concerned.)

If this continues, I'm going to drop it after episode 3.

I get the feeling the MC was in that prison out of boredom.
He just wanted to leave, and he did. I want to see something like that again!
Maybe it's weird to point this out but the fact that many shots that could have been static are in slight motion seems right to me.
It seems like there will be "coworkers" here and right from the start, there are some I don't like.
(Let's see how it goes)
Anyway, it's a good first episode, and it would be great if the rest didn't fall off.
As it sometimes does.

Did everyone magically ate the damm drug at the same time, does the mc (the one in the prison) has infinite stamina; cause it sure looks like for a science fiction a lot of human limitations and laws of physics are being broken.
Animation was smooth, the police were wholly inept, fight at least looked good.
