Do you open the door to Jehovah’s Witnesses or do you ignore them?

When I was a kid, my mother never wanted to deal with them and would hide behind a wall like we were dealing with an active shooter whenever they came to the door. She’d tell me not to go anywhere near the windows, and we’d have to stay like that for a few minutes.

But nowadays, I do open the door at my home, but only because it’s always the same sweet old ladies who love seeing my cats, and somehow never push any religious discussion (though the magazine they give out ends up right in the recycling bin after they’re gone). But if they were annoying in any way, I’d probably ignore them.

What about you? Even if you disagree with the door-to-door approach or their sect, do you try to stay polite and chat with them a bit to satisfy them? Or do you prefer to ignore them entirely? Or do you even troll them in some ways?

Honestly if I don't recognize the person from my peep hole, I very rarely open the door anymore. I find most of the time they are solicitors or just trying to sell me something.

Same thing with the landline in my house. More often than not it's just scammers.

My parents were the same, always forcing me and my sisters to get away from the windows so they dont see we are home. But now, if I am home alone, I just open the door because they are not that bad. They just give me pamphlets and updates on what events are happening in the community.

Kind of shocked this wasn't just my family who would hide from them, I wonder why thats such a norm.

I don't live in America so this does not happen a lot.

But on the one time it did my family opened the door for them, listened to what they were there for, and just politely sent them off

I have not seen any in years because I live in the country and where they aren't too present. I hide from people at the door like any other.

I only open the door if I'm expecting someone, or if I actually know the person and I want to/have time to talk to them at that moment. I'll occasionally make an exception for kids selling cookies or chocolate as a fundraiser, but only if I 100% plan to buy some.

I don't have any interest in religion, so I won't waste their time or mine pretending otherwise. I wouldn't want someone doing that to me if I was in their place. Same with people selling a service or product that there's no chance I'm going to buy. Their time is valuable, and they're better off moving on to the next house where someone might be interested.

Yea, people have always been careful about them, more in the past than today. Their history is quite interesting though, as they're not quite a sect but they're far from an official religion either. From what I've heard, they're usually non-violent, with christian principles.

It seems they've recruited well past the 144,000 members required (12 dozen of Israel tribes souls who will be saved), so the "you must recruit 2 people to be saved" mantra I had heard is probably outdated now. This was the most sect-like fact of their organization. But they usually avoid any contact with society expect recruiting and preaching

On how to react, you can say Hello, or if you're really nice you can exchange point of views in a coffee shop (probably not letting a stranger in your home), but you'll have a hard time convincing them to renounce their beliefs, especially since the movement is based on a rewriting of the Bible.

In a nutshell, they're crazy nuts and society outcasts with radical beliefs. So keep your mind open and stand your ground if you ever engage with them.

They rarely knock even though their building is two blocks away (might have something to do with the doorbell being broken and them not being able to even enter the building).
Even if we fixed the doorbell I don't think I'd open the door. I know their beliefs but I haven't practiced anti-JW polemics and I wouldn't be prepared.
I guess reading 4th and 5th century anti-Arian fathers is in order.

I did open the door for them when I was like 14. I basically told them that cool that you guys do this but I don't believe in God and after that they never came to that apartment again. I've never had any at my door since and I've lived in like 5 different places after that. I kinda hope they won't come to our new place since I mostly find them annoying as I don't care for their stuff. But less than a kilometer away from our home is a Jehovas Witnesses like building complex so I hope they don't come out too often from there near our house

Jehovah's Witnesses are specially fucked up kind of cultish fringe Christian. They believe that only a certain number of people are going to heaven, and right now they've got a little reservation to God war between their followers.

To sum it up, no, I don't ever open my door for Jehovah's Witnesses. I threaten to call the police and for them to get the hell off of my property for trying to pitch their fearmongering apocalypse horseshit.

Never encountered any since France is quite an atheist country

And if I ever were to, I guess I'd open the door out of sheer curiosity, tell them I'm not interested and close the door on them. If they insist, I'd just mess with them if I have the time and patience

Never encountered one, the only people that come to my door are deliverymen. If one were to show up at my doorstep one day, I'd probably do what your mom had you do lol. I don't open the door to strangers in general, that seems like a terrible idea.

@Kwanthemaster what sect/denomination? I'm a Mennonite.
I offer hospitality to anyone who needs help & the JW most certainly do. i start speaking in Hebrew (as i grew up learning Hebrew via the earthly father of my my mother) & usually they leave thinking I'm summoning a demons & those JWs permanently leave usually never to return when in actuality i am musically preforming the Psalms while offering my emergency grape juice (wine stored in a Welch's grape juice container)

I attend a non-denominational church, but I think it's pretty close to Baptist. I need more study on the finer points of theology to know what would best describe me.

I am familiar with that channel and have seen this video before (it's a good one). Theology is an interest of mine, so I'd say I have a decent understanding of some things, but I only have a surface level knowledge of the differences between Protestant denominations. Which, I know the point is not labels, nor that you must agree on everything to attend a church (its the fundamentals which are essential), but I think it's good to be informed and have a reasoned understanding what you do believe.

@Kwanthemaster Non-denominational church tend to blend aspects of different branches.

If you're looking for the closest in terms of baptismal theology and practice, the Anabaptist, Free Evangelical, Pentecostal, and Plymouth Brethren are closest to the Baptist tradition, particularly regarding believer’s baptism by immersion.

Anabaptist (including Mennonites) share the believer’s baptism view and emphasize a voluntary faith commitment.

Free Evangelists tend to be flexible and focus on personal salvation.

Like Baptists, Pentecostals strongly emphasize the personal decision to follow Christ before baptism and use immersion. There is a focus on Holy Spirit baptism, but the practice of water baptism is similar.

These branches (Anabaptist, Free Evangelists, Pentecostals and Plymouth) do not recognize infant baptism, much like Baptism.

@Eldinis

Thanks for the breakdown.

While I don't recognize infant baptism, and was baptized as a profession of my faith (in water, by immersion), I learned that in some places, believers are being baptized with sand, and maybe just a sprinkling at that. Is water and immersion truly necessary components outlined in Scripture? Am I in the position to say these professions are invalid because they did not have access to the same things that I did? I know there are improper ways to go about things, but would Baptists make the same compromises given the circumstances? My earlier point is more to say that further study on denomination beliefs would be helpful to get a better idea of where I land, but not that I am looking to mold them to nicely fit into one, when the main concern of every believer should be to align with Scripture.

@RareAnimeHunter - Thanks, I'll check him out.

@Kwanthemaster John the Baptist (aka John the Evangelist, John the Immerser) announced the Christ. He baptized many followers and Jesus himself in the Jordan river. He is a Saint described in all four Gospels (Mark, Matthew, Luke & John) and chronologically, both the last Evangelist and, if I'm not mistaken, the second-to-last announcing Christ before his birth (because I'm counting Cherubim Gabriel).

For centuries, baptism has been made in rivers, lakes, seas or oceans (confusion with sand?). Nowadays, more and more baptism ceremonies are done in churches with water blessed with the grace of Christ by a formal authority (usually the bishop or the pastor). They're always a good cause for rejoice and festivities.

In Christianity, what matters most is intention, water, the Trinity formula, and reverence.

“I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Whether it's done by a priest, a deacon, a pastor, or a fellow believer—it is still profoundly holy when done with love and truth. In the spirit of John and the Christ, they saw all of Christians as brothers and equals. Anyone can become a Christian if they follow the Holy Spirit with love and intent.

Now, in practice, doing it in front of the local community with your local pastor is probably the most convenient way. But, in theory, anyone can claim becoming a Christian a fortiori a Baptist.

Extraordinary minister

Any person, even a non-Christian, can baptize in case of extreme necessity (like danger of death), as long as:

They intend to do what the Church does.

They use water.

They say the words: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

This means even a layperson who isn’t baptized can perform a valid baptism—if they follow the form and spirit of the Church. This reflects the belief that God is the one truly baptizing, not the human minister.

Some faith leaders might not recognize it but the Catholic Church does. This is really exceptional though.
