Man, Uka's feelings for Kai has been all over the place. Kinda felt bad that Kei is always caught up in this, pretty much every time.

Luckily, this episode also gave us a school festival so it wasn't just oversaturated drama. Uka needs to be strong but luckly has support around her, especially her friends.

What in the Monogatari was the direction of this episode, Jesus man... I FUCKING LOVED IT. And after checking the credits, yeah, Takeshi Honda being a KA on the episode makes it all make sense. Don't let the actual SB/ED of the episode go under the radar because man, even with the limited resources, Oohata fucking carried with his SB. Easily one of the most unique and engaging episodes of the whole Winter season.

Actual content itself was insane as well, fitting for the direction. The first half was just so cute man, I couldn't help but want to kick my feet with how cute they were. Especially that scene when Uka and Kai left the karaoke together and the visual aesthetic just went full Monogatari for a second there lol, I loved it... But that relay race took that aesthetic and put timesed 10 it BECAUSE OH MY GODDDD IT LOOKED SO GOOD.

And that fucking ending... WHATTTTTTTTT. While I do feel like the relationship kinda felt like it kept going in circles at times, her character growth on the other hand, I loved it. She went from just repeating stuff to being a total badass with a heart of cotton candy super fast. Kai looks kinda lame next to her, hope he figures that out now. Still man, what the actual fuck. This being a shoujo, I didn't expect for them to get together for another like three seasons if there were any, LET ALONE A FUCKING KISS???

Marvelous episode.

You know, people say this is just another average shoujo and all that, but one think no one can dispute ... the gag game and quick slides, or the direction of the scenes if you want, that this anime does for comedy purpose are top notch.

I cant other than share the sentiment from above, this episode was actually brilliant.

My jaw is on the fucking floor. Honda Takeshi, you saved my bitchass life. This was such a perfect episode for them to flex so much animation talent. The use of cuts, camera angles, the monogatari style words on the ground to convey emotions.. it was all so fitting for an episode where Uka finally let her feelings bubble up to the surface. Had that Eva rebuild direction flare thanks to Honda's cuts, but kept the charm of Honey Lemon Soda. I can't express how proud of Uka I am. THAT ENDINGGGGGG I WONNNNNNN!!

Marin was HILARIOUS in this episode too. The direction style made her confession and rejection by Kai so funny. She was such a hater all episode long and it had me dying lmao.

Uka literally and metaphorically took a lot of steps forward today. Her telling Kai to come to her and rely on her for help as well was so casually said, but it's something Uka of even 2-3 episodes ago never would have been able to say. Protector and protected is nice in theory, but as we know from last episode, Kai has some issues too and he could use some help and emotional support every now and again too. The race scene looked so beautiful I had chills! Love the baton pass scene.

THE CONFESSIONNNN!!! After winning the race and overcoming all the obstacles, why not confess? What's the worst that could happen, you stay the same? Best day of Uka's life so far. I can not wait for next episode!!!

We finally got a confession even if Uka was half awake while saying it.
Seems like Kai has some enemies as well who are willing to go pretty for the annoy him.
To lock up someone like that and restrict his movement is such a way is a crime, things worked out tho.
And we finally got a moment of Uka saving Kai.

People that love to watch anime in 2x speed will completely love this episode, I've no doubt about it even though I'm not these kind of people.

So I'll just focus on just one thing, Kai's predatory behavior on putting a pressure to Uka to make her confess to him first, by rushing Uka so that she doesn't have enough time to think that "Is Kai a suitable boyfriend for me or not?", he takes the advantage of the fact that a lot of girl confess to him to make Uka conclude that "since a lot of girl confess to him, that must mean that he's a nice guy and I should confess to him too", what a perfect playboy playbook. I'm amazed and terrified by him at the same time. If I'm a playboy, his strategy would be praised by me for sure.

Marin might've been a sore loser when it came to getting rejected but I couldn't help but find her bitterness funny just from how extra it all was. The red shirts are irredeemable, though.

Well, dropping this. I enjoyed it at the start but what happened?
I'm surprised a lot of you are actually enjoying this now but to each his own, it's like I'm watching a different show, I can't follow what is going on anymore.
Art, animation, pacing is all over the place. Reusing frames with slight differences, it's like they've ran out of budget.
Watched until half of the episode and I just realized I really wasn't enjoying it anymore.

Pacing on this episode was crazy, felt like it was at 2x speed and we just jumped from scene to scene which is a shame. There was another episode this season similar and then the pacing returned to normal so hopefully that's the case next week

This episode was way too fast paced, and out of sorts. It felt off, and not in the good way. It feels like they wanted to speedrun the School Festival Arc, which just feels criminal to me. Definitely going to read the manga to get a better feel for the School Fes.

Overall; this episode deserved a slower pace, and consistent animation. This episode is by-far the worst one produced out of the entire season.

The only true notable thing(s) that happened, if you want to call it that, is Kai getting a confession, rejecting it, and moving forward. Kai, and Ukas mutuals realize fast that Uka has feelings for Kai, and give her support and after Uka saves Kai, Kai was tied up and restricted in the same place Uka found Kai at the beginning of the season, Kai finally writes something on the back of Ukas shirt, just as Uka did for everyone else, and competes in the school race, which after realizing everything, Uka essentially faints and is taken to the nurses office, Kai is of course watching her until Uka finally gives Kai a, although half out of it, confession of her own. We are left to speculate on what happens, which should be explored in the next episode.

I hope the last episode isn't nearly of a mess as this one was.

Goddamn, this was a different type episode, and I loved it. The quirky humor and animation at the start had me going.
"Date meeeeeee!" 😁 Marin was hirlarious.

Then, they were clearly setting up something with race prep.

Later that the lightspeed character and romance development made me strain to keep up, punctuated just enough with more quirky humor and invention use of the otherwise mediocre animation.

And we finish with confession and kisu.

I might have had more fun here than with the previous 10 episodes put together.

Episode director went crazy??? Never in a thousand years would I have guessed that a Shaft/Science Saru type style would work that well for this show.

Kind of bums me out that the entire show wasn't done like this though. The jokes landed so well, the hype moments were so impactful, and the emotional drive in this one episode was stronger than all the previous 10 combined.

You could also tell that the direction for the voice actors really allowed each and every one of them to shine in their own way. You almost forget how goated some of the cast members are up until this episode.

I've not been having a fun time watching this show this season, but this episode alone made it worth it. 8.5/10 episode for an otherwise 6/10 show. Hopefully they've got something cooking up for the season finale as well.

Loved the episode. Didn't know who these 3 guys who just decided to pick on Kai & Uka were, nonetheless, loved how Uka finally proposed. I mean, this is anime, i'm sure most of the proposals are under the impression that they're either in a dream or dead or whatever, but really glad that a reality where Kai & Uka are gonna date is finally gonna happen. Excited to see how this would conclude in the upcoming episode.

what the fuck did I just watch? This direction style was sooo out of place, it's pretty weird to say the least. It's insanely fast too, like 3 episodes of progression happened in a single episode. Animation was suffering too, some scenes felt like reading manga panels, and the cgi too... The early episodes were slow as shit for no good reason and now they decide to speedrun this episode with directive freedom. Not gonna lie I will have to rewatch this episode because this anime is a late night watch for me where I can just turn my brain off, since the whole show is pretty simple and slow, and now they drop an episode like this...

but even after rewatching the episode, I will still not like this direction, what a mess

Dang, loved the direction this episode, it was super fast but I really liked the flow of it, those moments of Uka and her girlfriends were lovely and I can't decide whether I hate Marin or not haha, now if only crunchyroll wouldn't have ruined the climax of the episode with their kiss spoiling it on their Youtube channel before I got a chance of watching the episode....

Someone needs to stab those 3 guys with the red shirts.

This episode had all the things that I love and all the things that I hate of the show. Which is a feat, considering it's only 24 mins minus OP/ED.

What I love: character progression, heartfelt story, crazy good direction.

What I hate: rushed plot points, slideshow animation, throwaway antagonists just to stir conflict.

If they had some real budget for animation and someone who could write a decent script, this show could have been one of the best shoujo of all times. :(

We usually have a fairly moderate pace, but here I just have the impression that they wanted to put as many elements as possible in 20 minutes, it was too fast and it went in all directions. Frankly not a fan of this rhythm, too bad..

This was a super weird episode but not in a bad way at all it just had a very different vibe to the others.

Idk if what Uka said at the end was out loud but I'm assuming not. Regardless they kissed so this is major progress.

That being said I will be really disappointed if we don't get a bit more of a background into Kai like what he's actually thinking and why he does that job or what his family is like.

While I liked the animation in this episode, the pacing of this definitely felt weirder compared to previous ones. It felt like (this is just me speculating) they cut out a lot of inbetween scenes from the manga that probably connect and build toward events better. In the beginning, going to Kai's workplace felt like it was acrually happening in Ishimori's head for a second, and finding Kai at the sports festival (and them talking) also felt weird and off kilter.

Again, I'm not sure if this was just a director's choice that was deliberate and they were trying to do something different, or something got cut and everyone at the studio just did the best they could (which I actually sympathize with them).

And that girl who got rejected at the beginning, her reaction had me rolling. Get that girl into Losing Heroines S2!!

I think Uka said everything she was said aloud during that final scene? Couldn’t tell if her lips were moving.

Was not expecting this ending but honestly happy about it. I’d rather rush to the relationship phase then end the season on a whole bunch of nothing. They’ve been the most fun couple this season, too.

I wish I could smoke what a lot of other folks are smoking in this thread, despite the stylistic running scene being really cool, I did not think this was an amazing episode lol, thankfully it looks like I’m not the only one thinking this, and it’s mainly due to the pacing. Back during the Cultural Festival episode, I thought that one was paced fine, but for the Sports Festival I felt like I was running the relay too with how much went down lol, and if I’m not mistaken, we never did find out what Uka and Kai talked about on the roof did we, felt like we kinda skipped an episode there. And it really is a shame too because the content itself was great, all of the Uka and Kai moments were golden, Marin’s bits were goofy but fun, and the relay race bit was really cool like I said earlier, but it was just all playing out too quickly for my liking.

Also everyone is saying this was directed like Monogatari, but personally I didn’t get that feeling, the relay bit maybe, the words on the road as well, but I didn’t feel it anywhere else, idk maybe I’m just not hip this time around lol, but I do really appreciate the work that was done by Takeshi Honda like others are mentioning, if only it was in a better paced episode. Oh well, it was a fun one still, and that kiss at the end was nice too, we’ll see if Uka finds out that it wasn’t a dream or not in the finale next week.
