I'd say the reason people hate it, is due to the lack of understanding about it. They don't understand that anime is just like any other form of media. It doesn't help that the most vocal sides pander the stuff that aren't interesting to people.
The normies pander the mainstream Shonen series with a teenage protagonist that's always fighting and saving people. Or the other side of normies that pander the Shoujo series that are just slice of life high School romcoms. I've seen a lot of people say, "why does every anime have a teenage main character? Why not any adults?" I tell them that Shonen and Shoujo are demographics aimed at teens. So asking why a lot of Shoujo and Shonen series have a teenage protagonist, is like asking why a lot of Disney, Nickelodeon, or Cartoon Network shows have kid main characters. I tell them that if they want more adult protagonists, they'll more likely find that in Seinen and Josei series. And even then, there are some exceptions.
And then you have the degenerates that call everyone tourists. They usually watch harem and ecchi isekai series, and think that's Japanese culture. Ironically, these type of people have a narrow view of Japanese culture. It's basically the equivalent of watching a bunch of American shows that are set in high school, and thinking you know American culture. And unfortunately, the sentence I just wrote is a thing. I've seen people on TikTok and Twitter saying that they want to experience an American high school. 😐 And what's an American high school to them? Wearing pajamas in class, being apart of cliques and wearing fashions correlating to it, cheerleaders dating jocks, prom, etc. And some of them glorify that... I digress... The point is, they have this narrow view of anime and spread it to everyone, and anyone that doesn't fit in their box is a tourist or normie. These types are the reason that people think of anime as lame or weird.
If people realize that anime is like everything else, then they'd be open to it. Anime has different genres, tones, characters, etc. In a way, it reminds me of African shows. A lot of people think of them as "so bad they're good", and they had a point of not being the best. Though if people would open their mind, they'd see the different plots. So far, I've enjoyed: Miseducation, Savage Beauty, and Blood & Water. And if people sneer their noses at me suggesting this, then that speaks to everything. 😐 |
