Damn, Shunsui's injuries really did take a serious toll on him.

We finally got to see what Nanao could do this arc and it's an moment I've been waiting for. There's important background storytelling about her and how she received her zanpakuto. I do think this episode had a degree of emotional context along with how her past including her first meeting with Shunsui. Either way, it's great to see her come to the front lines to take on Lille Barro.

He was enjoying all that lap-pillow and was even about to say something, except the sniper quincy didn’t let him lol. Sometimes you need to feel for Kyoraku, I mean this man is already at the last stages of his life, doesn’t get trusted enough by his own people plus worse, the attack that he thought would be the decisive blow just triggered the quincy guy even more. Though yeah, last episode it was Nemu and now it’s Nanao, as these both characters have kind of played the same kind of supporting role in this series so far, but never got enough screen time of their own.

I’m glad both of them got, now, but yeah, that backstory tells us Nanao is the NIECE of Kyoraku right? So yeah, I hope the love that’s been stated and talked about here is simple love between family members lol. Anyway that stuff aside, the episode in itself was again a spectacle. Like we’ve three or four episodes on repeat now when it feels like not just they’ve expanded over the content, but have even executed it way more better. I liked the entire bit towards the end, with that heavy background music and the way they kept us guessing if that guy would die or not. They killed that bozo in the end after all, and that's all it matters.

Bazz B and Haschwalth backstory next time.

Once again awesome soundtrack and quite spectacular visuals, really does feel like no expense was spared in the production department.

And yet more Biblical/Christian references, they could barely be more on the nose with this. Always interesting to encounter in Japanese works.

“Why does this happen? Everyone entrust me with their prescious possessions… and then dies. Don’t they know I hate shouldering responsibilities? Nanao-chan, I can’t bear to be left behind with that sword ever again. Take the burden off of my shoulders, Nanao-chan. Please… let me protect you.”

Phenomenal adaptation. My only criticism is that I feel Lille's death is a bit anticlimatic. This isn't the anime's fault. It happened in the manga too. Nanao's god reflecting sword did come out of nowhere and Lille shooting more energy at the sword he acknowledged is capable of doing what Nanao said it was is stupid. I also thought Lille gathering energy for the trompette was funny because he took so long! That being said, this was a really good episode. I love Lille's transformations, I love the way the anime depicted his owl form, and I love the exposition provided here. The backstory was pretty emotional and very well done.

That was the episode I was waiting for. Why Nanao is there.
Being a super glass cannon with a very specific power.

After that attack, next episode I want a little of POV from the other groups. That platform was annihilated, see that deserves at least one "Oh shit!".

@ABigChungus I can absolutely believe that based on even just the last few episodes of this one series tbh! (If all that was indeed the same person, I really don't know.) Although it's not only the compositions, it's the musical direction as well, everything's at the best points they could be.

I mean, the episode was beautiful & the villain was very cool, but i honestly do not care at all about Nanao, nor was the fight that intense. She just reflected his attack & 1 shot him. Loved the Mayuri fight a lot more, honestly. But loved Morning Remembrance though, was nostalgic.

It was a really cool episode. I thought he would've lost, but he was still there, so annoying—as expected of a God. We also saw Nanao and Shunsui's backstory and how Nanao's Zanpakuto helped them win against such a fiery opponent. It was really cool. Shunsui needs a little break after all that. It was a great episode.

OH MY GOD SLAYING SWORD, The "OH MY RUBBER NEN" moment of Bleach is finally here.

To be honest, the episode is an absolutely phenomenal adaptation of the manga. Amazing visuals (the Trompete scene is almost as majestic as Ywhach ascension in the first episode, pure CINEMA), great soundtrack, insane VA's performances, gives us more backstory on Shunsui, Nanao finally gets her moment to shine...the only problem is that the sword itself feels like an asspull that was made for the sake of this fight. If you can ignore that detail and see it like "a sword that deflects conceptual attacks" (similar to Ukitake's sword), then there is pretty much not any problems with the episode and this part of the manga as a whole.

IMO this is another 10/10 source material adapted episode. If you're anime only or you have troubles eating this (very obvious) asspull, then I can see not enjoying this as much as the first half of this fight or Baby Hold you Hand 2 and that opinion is perfectly valid by all accounts, but it personally doesn't detract from my enjoyment of this episode.

Can't wait for FRI END and "My Last Words" (confirmed last episode of the cour by the usual leakers)

@Chie_Satonaka at the very least I was hoping for a Lille Barro backstory and some context to the sword that isn't just the arbitrary "uhhh.. it can reflect God's power, or, like.. something".

Hopefully they fix up Gerard's fight at the very least.

@GoldenSaltPillar the episode was beautiful nonetheless, I have a feeling they put crazy budget into Friend and it'll be the fight of the cour. They have been hyping it up all season.

Kubo goes hard on the body horror this arc and Lille's true Vollstandig is essentially cosmic horror. Lille is now unrecognisable in his second transformation and becomes incomprehensibly esoetric just like Biblically accurate Angels. I believe it's inspired by the four Beasts that guard God in the Book of Revelations (appearing as a lion, an ox, an eagle, and a man), whom are described as having "eyes about and behind them". Both Vollstandigs are different representations of angels. He is also made out of pure light now. One of my favorite designs in the series, and one of the best portrayals of angels in fiction. This is also perhaps the most visusally beautiful episode so far. TYBW has the best art direction and aesthetics in TV anime.

And Lille's fate along with the rest of the Schutzstaffel were foreshadowed in Cour 2 by Senjumaru's fate-weaving Bankai.

Last week it was Mayuri and Nemu, this week it’s Kyoraku and Nanao. We got some great backstory to lay the foundations of the origins of their relationship, and it was awesome to see Kyoraku supporting Nanao as they finished off Lille. As silly as Kyoraku can be toward her, his care for her is genuine. For me, this fight itself wasn’t very spectacular like some of the others but its emotional weight was on another level.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

The asspull comments I’ve seen are kinda true, though I think it’s the best version of one I’ve seen. The backstory that came along with it at least made it make sense. It really boils down to the fact that of course the villain that Shunsui decides to fight qualifies as a god and therefore there’s a foil to that. The classic shounen coincidence:)

@HealthAndWealth Imagine this thing hunting you down from atop the Wahrwelt under the blessed wrath of God after ascending from your eternally-sinking, depression-inducing ocean where you cut off the head of your opponent and blew it up with your reality-warping Bankai. I would give up if I were Shunsui too.

This fight unfortunately felt similiar to me as when I read the manga. I personally don't have any problems with this particular asspull regarding Nanao Ise's backstory and her zanpakuto, because it does make sense and was kinda foreshadowed if you're a bit familiar with the Japanese mytho about the Ise Shrine.

However this "climax" of the fight is underwhelming to me. The moment she used her zanpakuto and how quickly it ended was lackluster and things like the sound the trumpet(obviously another refernce but this one to the bible) made could've used more "oomph". But I do like the story telling, just the fight itself was underwhelming.

As others have said, the ending of the fight did feel a bit anticlimactic given how the reflection from Shinken Hakkyoken just yeeted Lille Barro so easily. I was expecting a bit more fight from him, but I guess only a God's power can defeat a God which is what Nanao did.

That being said, this is still a 5/5 episode. Kyoraku's backstory was fantastic, you could feel the tiredness and pain in his voice. Bro just wanted his suffering to finish and so he entrusted the thing entrusted to him to Nanao. Very poetic, that the mother passed it on to Shunsui and then now Shunsui passes it on to Nanao.

PS: So Ohana (Katen) gave birth to Okyo (Kyokotsu) inside whom Shinken Hakkyoken was stored. I wonder who is the father, is it my man Kyoraku? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The episode was somewhat good, but we're starting to feel the boring dragging, especially since these events could have been condensed into half an episode or less. The dragging feels like it gradually kills the enjoyment, bit by bit. I don’t know the reason behind this, but I hope the season doesn’t end on this very slow pace.

The animation, however, is very good, as we've been accustomed to in the previous episodes.

This is the least offensive asspull I've ever seen and it's good that people aren't getting too spergy about it like back when the chapter dropped. Maybe because they've realize that it came packaged with a great backstory + pieces of foreshadowing + great power designs + great presentation.

I never thought of it that way but lol this is so true. "God-reflecting power" is vague and Kubo should've just explicitly stated that it reflects conceptual attacks.

@KingTJDaGoat Nothing, unless you don't like the way Gerard went out (which only felt anticlimactic because it happened in the midst of that last batch of massively rushed chapters). I also don't know what he's talking about when he says the future fights will have asspulls, as that's objectively false. The only one with the "asspull" was this one and it wasn't even as egregious as these people would've had you believe.

@Ecchi_Zone What's wrong with Gerard's fight? And why is the arrow an asspull when it has major foreshadowing and thematic resonance already?
