There’s definitely a pattern where the FMC’s body type is more slender and has less emphasis on physical attributes. Is this just a coincidence or is there a deeper reason behind it?

I dunno..Maybe because they don't think big boobs will be an effective marketing strategy on a female audience. We can talk about whether or not that's actually true, but I'm fairly certain that's the reason. History has shown that when a company wants to use the "boobs sell" tactic it's pretty much always geared towards guys.

Also, not sure "flat" is the right word. Smaller, maybe, but I don't think the majority of them are flat. One of the things anime has taught me though, is that clothes and maybe the addition of some bandages can do a very good job at hiding a bigger bust. Looking at you Rozé of the Recapture...

well I'd like to think it's most likely because most women IRL have small tits as well, so it's meant as a self insert. Same situation with a lot of isekai anime aimed towards guys. A lot of cases it's the the general copy and paste Kirito looking clone for guys to self insert to

  • Female authors know better female physiology; they know that a pre-adolescent can't have such large breasts and hips.
  • They are not driven by sexual fantasies when designing female characters.
  • The female audience doesn't specifically demand large attribute, so authors are less likely to cater to that, and they solve it more realistically.

Maybe they're more relatable for the target audience, many of whom don't have developed boobs yet.

The idea of Shoujo is to promote "pure love" and not something with lust. Like, the most common male archetype in Shoujo is "the prince on the white horse", you know? Same shit here. That's the reason, I think.

probably because they're not really trying to focus on sexual traits and a lot of guys tend to also overexaggerate how big the "average" size is for body parts in general
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

No, the idea is to engage a young female audience in whatever the story is about, which can be almost anything.

Don't seem to be many in the shoujo I watch.

So that all the girls can relate with the character. It's the same case with shounen romcom mcs whom are almost always not so good looking loners.

Never really thought about it, my guess is that the female target audience is more interested in the guys looking hot rather than the girls

Anyways, took a look thru my list and, at least out of the shoujo i've seen, 99.9% of female MCs are on the smaller side of the cup-size, with only Zakuro (Tokyo Mew Mew) being a large and Sailor Mars (Sailor Moon) a medium

This makes shoujo designs overall more stereotypical than shounen, as at least in shounen there's more of a mix in sizes among the main female cast

Probably since most shoujo protags are really young, like no shit we have young characters with massive gazongas but since these shows r typically aimed at kids and arent aiming super hard into sexualistion and creating a main character relatable to the target audience,,,,
Love can sometimes be magic. But magic can sometimes...just be an illusion...

@Gnza granted that yes adolescents are still developing (cuz most shoujo/shounen MCs are adolecents, not pre-adolescents), it is also true that A) different people develope in different ways (aka sizes) and at their own pace, and B) you don't grow everything all at once from 17-18, that is what the whole adolescent period (13-18) is for, developing from a kid to an adult

So no it is not realistic to have every adolescent female character flat-cheasted, nor is it realistic to have every adolescent female character with giant tits, what is realistic is actually both and everything inbetween

(said by someone who looks like she came out of a shoujo manga and had classmates who looked like Uzaki-chan)

This is about as big as I could find poking around.

Kaleido Star (2003)

Senjou no Valkyria: Valkyria Chronicles (2009)

I guess shoujo heroines don't have big breasts because no author ever wanted to explore this territory. Wonder why that is, though.
There are shoujo stories about girls that are unusually large in height, but big breasts seem to be off limits.

Not all girls in real life are big breasted. Plus, some girls may be sensitive about seeing girls with bigger chest sizes than themselves.

Oh, no. I didn't mean for that to come off as if it's a problem with the show. But in reality, some girls look down on girls with those chest sizes. I mean, even in the anime community, people (especially females) complain about those types of characters in anime that are meant to be directed towards guys. Of course, there could be other reasons I'm not considering and my thoughts may not be the reasons why shoujo mangakas don't include those types of characters. But those are just my own assumptions.

@Prideful_Lion Oh no worries, it can be a lil hard to get what people mean on the internet sometimes without expressions and tone of voice :3

Your def right about some women being like that, it's ironic, and a bit sad actually, a lot of times it's women pushing for accepting yourself for who you are and self love, yet they're the ones who complain about such characters because of their own insecurities not realizing they'd be so much happier if they took their own advice

For the same reason the average harem/Isekai protagonist is an average looking Kirito clone, easy relatability for the intended audience.

Shoujo is made for women, and Japanese women are mostly pretty flat. (Also simpler to draw)

It's an easier self insert character. It's easier for someone with large breasts to relate to someone with small breasts than the other way around, especially in the romantic context of most male targeted media claiming that guys only like big boobs. Showing an MC with small boobs falling in love is more empowering and gives more hope to a female audience. Breast size is also something that isn't easy to change and with shoujo tending to show girls who are able to take control and make things go the way they want it's better to give them a handicap than to design them in a way that's unachievable for some audience members.

If girls were instead given the notion that all men lust for small breasts and view large breasts as bad then it might be the other way around, that we'd see more shoujo anime about girls who feel self conscious about their large breasts, but that isn't the case.

Flat chests and AA cup sizes do appear to make up the vast majority of breast sizes in female MCs in popular shoujo romance anime. I'm pretty sure it's no coincidence though, and here are two reasons as to why I believe that's the case:

- Self-insert and relatability reasons. Since pre-adolescent and adolescent girls are the general target audience for shoujo, and their bodies are still in a developing phase, they'll likely just find it hard to relate to a female main protagonist with a small waist and big boobs. A character with a flat chest or has an AA cup size would generally be much easier to relate to for the average girl.

- I'm guessing that most shoujo romance anime focus on the romance elements and chemistry rather than the physical attractiveness of the girl characters. If there is an emphasis on physical attractiveness in a shoujo series, it would usually just be on the guy characters instead.
