What a wholesome episode. Marika just knows how to deal with social problems especially when involving a family and friend. Takae proves herself to be a good person, someone who wants to put family first in her life. Also, respect to Keisuke for standing up for Marika. |

If only the original Marika could know how much spiciness she got spared from by Takae hijacking her mind. Not to defend Chika but I probably wouldn't act normal after finding out my daughter's been keeping a "parental" affair from me right after I was starting to recover from a "traditional" one. |

Yeah Chika did things wrong but no doubt she is the one that most suffers in this anime, even her mother is like that, its somewhat understandable how she acts. |

Sigh..welp turns out the guy was a too good to be true after all.Didnt understand what his goal was honestly, not even smooching money off of her and just trying to fool around? If she didnt found out now then what was he planning, just cut contact? Glad she still managed to turn to better afterwards and now this whole new mess to deal with. |

Wow this was a really serious drama episode, little comedy and romance. Didn't know this anime would be so intriguing and delve into serious matters. Man that mother really needs to check herself and stop abusing her daughter because of her pain, she'll make her daughter hate her. Maybe it would be good to update the Tags. I am really enjoying this show and this cliff hanger. Now I can't wait for the next weekend episode. |

FUCK. I wasn’t expecting shit to get this dark this soon. I thought buddy was genuinely just a great dude, but this explains why he was so accepting of the move in thing, he probably had no intention of ever really being with Marika and Chika. Feel horrible for the mom cause you can tell she got some serious mental issues and got left by the first husband and now this boyfriend, but you shouldn’t take relationship drama out on your own flesh and blood. Men come and go but your daughter is always your daughter. She’s a deeply wounded woman HOLY SHIT THAT ENDING. You knew it was only a matter of time before chika found out about Marika double life but I didn’t think it would happen like this. She already lost her two men now she might lose her daughter.. we don’t know how much worse she’ll get now. Also PLEASE DO NOT TELL HER THATS YOUR WIFE π cliffhanger got me worried |

Brutal cliffhanger. Almost criminal. No way I'm waiting a whole week for the next episode. That said, Chika got double cheated in one week, by the only two people she cares about, to boot. Ouch. |

It's been the case since the very beginning, but this episode really serves to underscore the fact that this series in the genre section of the side panel needs a Drama tag rather than a Comedy tag. Beyond the genre mislabeling confusion, on some of the actual specific content of the episode itself, I can say that although I defended her in an exchange in the previous week's episode discussion thread topic (if anyone else perusing here happened to read it), I still don't really like the mother as a person (she's fine as a character though - adds more drama, more conflict, another perspective, and more depth to the series). Because it became very apparent to me through the rollercoaster of her highs and lows during this episode that even in the instances when she treats Takae/Marika kindly and even if she undergoes a seminal event in the future forcing her to turn over a new leaf in general from which she is nearly always or literally always kind and generous to her daughter thereafter, I think the current events still prove that she's at her core a person who cannot really be naturally kind and decent to others unless all of her wants (not even needs) are satisfied first and foremost, and then her generosity is like a luxury bonus she extends only in the best of times and optimal circumstances. As soon as even a slight inconvenience or negative development rubs her the wrong way she is right back to being cold and nasty. That's one thing when it concerns strangers or customers at your shitty entry-level fast food job. But quite another when it's your own immediate family - your own daughter or your children of either sex. That said, I can't claim that I personally am or would be all that different in the same circumstances. Maybe not different at all. I might even be worse! But that's also why I do not, never even contemplated having, and never ever will have children. You really have to know yourself before you bring another life into this world. If you know you're not cut out for it (as I know I absolutely wouldn't be), then never do it. Chika can't catch a break... When she does get a glimpse of hope, it all blows up in her face She comes crashing down hard, so hard that she even considered self-harm, which is a really dark and bad place to be mentally and emotionally. From her point of view, she's getting lied and cheated on from all sides. Her family (mother) seems to only call when she needs money, and it doesn't look like she calls that often just to say hi Even her own daughter lied to her. Marika/Takae acts completely different when with others while she pretends to be someone else in front of her. Everyone has lied to her, and she's having a meltdown and has had enough of being betrayed. Of course, she's going to lash out. |

@Love_And_Forward I disagree, she went trough a lot and is actually working to improve herself. Yes, lashing to her own kid is bad but look from her perspective: she has a mom who didn't care for her, husband who left her with her daughter and now the boyfriend she got turn out to be married man and a cheater. But you can see that after Takae made her lunch she actually cleaned her room and even wanted to give her some sweets later on. So I can understand her anger and unlike many anime mothers she is trying to change for the better. As for episode generally it still feels rushed, this moment when she sees Marika with Nijjimas happens at ~45th chapter of the manga. And we are on 5th episode now. Even if they kept the most important parts of the manga they skipped a lot of character development parts, for anime only watches it should be fine but for us who read the manga a lot her been taken out for the sake of piling everything into 12 episodes. Still exited to see next week episode, it has my most beloved manga moment. |

@Love_And_Forward Not at all, fathers can also get into such situations and still work to make something better. Like Edward's dad from FMA. As long as people are trying to improve and are not downright evil I can feel compassion for them. The Lord did say 'do not judge unless you wish to be judged yourself', so I try to truly understand people before my judgement is out. And her mom received so far the worst kind of treatment. |

@Love_And_Forward What part of "Yeah she did things wrong" did you not understand? Being understandable and right are two different things. If someone rapes you, escapes and then you found the person and kills them, you would not be right but almost everyone would understand why you did that. Not everyone can act as they should when their mentality is broken like that, its easy for you to say "i would be different" and maybe you would, but many people are not able to, these people need help, not someone cursing at them. |

The drama got into overdrive for this episode, where we got to see more of why Chika is the way she is. Going by what we know of her so far, she has been through a lot, but things did look promising when she thought she finally met a nice man who seemed to want to be with her. Sadly, that hope that she's worked hard to gain was crushed within seconds after seeing that same man with another women while shopping. Her anger at him was fully justified, but Marika did struggle to try and cheer her mother up. Her omelette rice dish did do the trick in the end, although the tension still remained. When one situation was wrapped up, another was ready to spring into action. Chika ended up finding out that Marika was spending time with Keisuke and Mai and overheard enough of their conversation to question her own daughter later on about who she truly is. I'm glad that Keisuke caught up and intervened here when Chika was getting too physical on Marika, although trying to defend Marika here was proving to be difficult for Keisuke. The cliffhanger's timing does have me worried as to what Keisuke was about to say, though! ^^; This was a pretty tense, but great episode overall. Chika is a very flawed mother and her dealings with Marika over the course of this series is a mixed bag, but because of that, I still hope that she can truly find a lucky break where she can get onto the path of redemption and become a better mother towards her daughter. The way that she was betrayed earlier was cruel, so whether she'll be able to make a step in the right direction or a step further into the abyss of darkness will depend on what she does next time. |

@lucio54 I a man beats up his wife, then cries and says he's so sorry in the morning, and then beats her up again the very next night, would you argue compassion or punishment? That's fairly common behavior in abusive relationships and in fact that's more or less an analog to what takes place in this episode. I'm questioning whether your sympathy in fact hinges on her claim to victimhood. Understanding? I can understand a lot. Understanding doesn't equal forgiveness. |

@Love_And_Forward How can be hard to understand? She did things wrong with her daughter, but at the same time that happened because of her suffering, and suffering makes people do wrong things, thats what reality is, if you say that she need punishment i would agree, but her life is already a punishment, maybe we should treat what caused it, or do you suggest to put her in jail and that's it? |

@Love_And_Forward Your take is one of the most judgemental and closed-minded I've seen in a while. Your lack of acknowledging someone's situation to comprehend circumstances to make a rational and fair assessment of Chika (Marika's mom) shows your lack of maturity to favor idealistic norms that are mostly unrealistic and unattainable to some people living a tough and difficult life. Grow up Like I mentioned in another thread. Chika is probably one of the most realistic and relatable characters ever to be written in an anime. Who here hasn't encountered a single parent who's struggling to pay the bills while walking the fine line of keeping their dignity and self-respect? As far as we know, she has kept herself from resorting to doing anything illiceit (prostitution) or criminal (stealing). To read your idiotic labeling of her as a "criminal asshole" without even providing a reasonable argument to why that is. If your go to answer is the episode she first made her appearance, then I suggest you watch it again because all you'll see is a mother worried sick about her daughter coming home late and claiming that she never spent her allowance (to eat) so that she could go to the aquarium (which was a lie). |

Chika really had it rough in this episode. I had a bad feeling about that guy because he seemed so evasive. I thought he might be hiding something, but I didn't expect him to be married with a kid! What a jerk. The scene where Chika eats omurice was powerful. We see a mother, frustrated and believing her life is doomed to loneliness and despair, slowly realizing she has her daughter by her side, no matter how harsh her words are. Her tears, realizing she's taking out her frustrations on the one person who stays with her despite everything, are so moving. That's why her reaction to seeing Marika with the Niijima feels like betrayal all over again. Keisuke's intervention was perfect timing, and his words to Chika about her actions towards Marika might be exactly what she needs to start changing. I hope it doesn't go where I think it might (like mentioning "wife") because that could bring some serious legal troubles. |

Wow things escalated quickly, especially after Chika found out that her boyfriend had another family, ouch. Also, talk about a cliffhanger, if Keisuke tells Chika that her daughter is his wife who knows what she'll do but I know she won't believe him. Hopefully his daughter comes out and says something else unless Keisuke says something more reasonable/believable... |

It's been the case since the very beginning, but this episode really serves to underscore the fact that this series in the genre section of the side panel needs a Drama tag rather than a Comedy tag. At least in addition to, but probably just in lieu of.
Like yesterday.
I've been wondering if the original Marika is basically dead then or could be considered such. Because right now the nature of the situation appears similar to some isekai I've seen in which the isekai'd person from Earth is not reincarnated from the beginning as a newborn baby but basically summoned somehow and then their consciousness takes over an already older living person. In the one I'm thinking of, it's basically all but confirmed that the original person whose body they are taking over died, but in that case there was an actual incident which is presumed to have caused their death. I felt nothing but irritation when the dad intervened at the end. He dares to lecture Marika's mother, even after he's told that she's her mother and he's nothing more than a stranger hanging out with someone else's kid? "Children should be treated with love"? "I'm a parent, too, do better"? That's the worst, high-horse comment he could've made to someone who's clearly upset and unstable. It might fly in a shounen fantasy adventure, but it's so strange and cringe-inducing to hear from grown adults having it out in the middle of the street. She's even right to be angry with Marika, too. "What's she doing, wandering around town without telling me anything? Who are these people? Why is she going into their house? Why is she acting and talking like a completely different person?" I would be freaked out, honestly, like I'm looking at a doppelganger of my child. I'm surprised that Marika's mom turned out to be the most interesting, sympathetic character in all of this, despite being a terrible mother with an unlikable personality. I did like the omurice scene. I just don't know if the writing can take this character in a believable, thoughtful, heartwarming (or heartbreaking) direction from here. Following the cliffhanger, I can't imagine the dad saying anything that's plausible, or at least anything that will de-escalate the situation so that Marika won't be dragged home afterwards and locked up in her room. I think he will say something stupid (but intended to be wise and wholesome), and it will somehow get through to Marika's mom, for no good reason. Then she will take Marika home and treat her better (or at least leave her be). |

Was thinking that with the line, I cant remember anything that happened before in this show being pretty dark. The series I had in mind when I made that statement without specifying further and naming it then was actually Isekai Yakkyoku, from 2022. There a pharmacologist researcher from Earth dies and wakes up in the other world after having taking over the body of a 10 year-old boy (hey, same age as the former Marika in this series) from a noble family who had just suffered a hit from a lightning strike. The original person who was that boy, if not outright stated, was at least heavily implied to have died because his consciousness is fully gone (at least as far as we the audience can see). To his family and the other people of that world it just looks like he was hit by the lightning, obviously injured, and was unconscious or comatose and bedridden for however many days. Except when he wakes up they naturally think it's their son/brother/etc. having woken up from the incident, but we the audience know it's actually our main guy from Earth. So he just takes over his body and identity. But yes, I have also seen Ascendance of a Bookworm and you're right that it's also like that and that's another good example of this phenomenon as a premise used in isekai. Because prior to seeing this variant I had only ever seen isekai protagonists reincarnated from birth as newborns, summoned/teleported in their original bodies from Earth with no way to get back, or traveling through a portal whether intentionally or not, obviously still in their original bodies too (and whether they can or even want to go back after that of course depends on the series in question). But Isekai Yakkyoku from my recollection is also like Ascendance of a Bookworm in that the immediate family members who live in the same household, their parents and siblings, are none the wiser and just think it's their family member continuing to live on after illness or injury, so they both have this kind of quality about them of the main character being like an imposter in a way and feeling like an imposter somewhat. |

Damn, feel sorry for Chika. Doesn't justify her treatment of Marika, but I think it's not too hard to understand why hating her isn't really fine either. Shit mother, shit ex-husband, shit new boyfriend, and what's worse now she finds out Marika's been hanging out with some strangers, goes to their home and behaves totally differently as well. Chika snapping at the end makes total sense. It's up to Keisuke to somehow drop the tension. The cliffhanger suggest he may blurt out "she's my wife" BS. And even though (as we've seen over and over again) Keisuke CAN absolutely be THAT retarded, I think it's safe to say he won't say it this time (since he'll end up in jail lol). I suppose he'll say Marika was befriended by Mai one day when Marika was all alone (as usual), and they bonded and have been hanging out since Chika is neglecting the mother's role; meanwhile poor child thirsts for love and care so that'll explain why she'd be that different with another hamily. Whatever excuse Keisuke makes though, I don't think Chika is in a state to think rationally. She'll likely threaten Keisuke with reporting him to police and forbid Chika from meeting with the two from now on. I expect a lot of drama and tension in following episodes, but I already wonder how it will all be resolved eventually. Wouldn't it be funny (or corny?) if Chika falls in love with Keisuke of all people? Anyways, another great episode. Think I'll check the manga once the anime ends. I don't hope this'll get 2 seasons or will adapt the full story considering the number of chapters. |

Nah, man. They really went the predictable route and made Hiroki another run-of-the-mill jerk. But then, what was his endgame with the moving and stuff? Not gonna lie, I feel lowkey disappointed with this outcome, considering the hopeful note the previous episode ended on. But well. Leaving that aside, the episode was still a pretty solid one. The drama surrounding Marika's mother feels truly engaging and I think the show's writing is doing a fairly decent job at making the viewer understand her circumstances. And as for the cliffhanger... Keisuke. Please, I'm begging you. Don't say anything stupid... |

Why do I feel like there's a chance that Chika and Keisuke could end up together?
@GakutoDeathGlare This thought crossed my mind a couple of times while watching the episode and I don't like the idea one bit. Besides it being convenient af writing-wise, it just feels wrong. Especially if Takae stays in Marika's body forever. |

It would be a cop out, and it would make things really weird and creepy "behind the scenes." Imagine Marika/Takae knowing her own mom is sleeping in their bedroom while she's also living there. Talk about getting your daily dose of netorare. |

I’m glad that Keisuke was able to say all that stuff about the potential move. And that is a great way to put Takae having to move in perspective: |

There's no choice but wait until next week. To be honest, I want next week to come quickly. This episode was incredibly powerful; I would've loved to see the continuation on the same day. Maika's mother truly deserves better—she's been through so much. I really hope she finds a place and someone who supports her π |

HansDevX said: And people in the comments in the previous discussions were like "He'S a GoOd gUy". And next week, Nijima is going to prison after the cliff hanger. Credit goes to the director and writers who made that possible. They did a great job subverting everyone's expectations without overly exaggerating the characters (except Keisuke). A lot of people, including myself, are hooked now to what's going to happen next. |

wow, shit hit the fan sooner than expected. we got to know the mother's character a bit more. still stuff like that can't just be forgiven. that cliffhanger, my goodness. even just imagining the situation is craaazy. also i have to mention, the instrumental ost was fantastic this episode. i do wonder if Marika interrupted him saying the thing. if not, can't imagine how is he gonna talk his way out of this. really good episode π |
