The episode started with a guy taking a drug that accelerates the body? Now that i think about it i am not sure but the guy who shot himself in the was the same guy. Lain got a new Navi. So far i love this show because i don't know what's goin on
the lack of sound and the annoying way these characters talk are driving me insane. i'm also getting the feeling this show would have been something i would have enjoyed more when i was an edgy 15 year old. i'll stick with it for now since i've only seen 2 episodes but man i hope this gets better.
I don't think Lain really went to the Party. the way she wanted her dad to set up her computer for her makes me doubt she would go outside after that,it's the internet addicction kicking in. what I think happened to her here was that she couldn't cope with rejecting her friends so she's imagining this scenario on the internet I think. But why are the friends saying the girl looked like Lain? I don't get it.Or it could be the Accela Supplement,anyway it was a very confusing episode.
Lain is the bad guy?.... na i dont think so but interesting. Refered to her as God..... interacting with Real World and the Wired..... what a fever dream this anime is like other posters have said. I like this anime so far...
Alright... things are much clearer now.
Although Lain and her family themselves remain as very weird people.
A seemingly unloving mother and big sister, and a caring but seemingly odd father.
Aside from that, it's somewhat clear now that this "Wired" world (I think that means the Internet, or Mobile Communication specifically) connects everyone... but literally in a subconscious level, perhaps...
I had the impression that the inner thoughts may have been from the girl who committed suicide, Lain, or several characters in the moment of a scene... but it's still hard to decipher.
Otherwise, now it seems that as the deceased girl claimed, "God" is here, and somehow I guess trying to bring the Wired fully into the real world.
At least from what the guy who took an odd nano drug (which I'm not sure what it does) said.
What's odd is how Lain was in fact at the club before, and spoke to the guy as if she was that same person from the club.
In that time, the club girls say that person told everyone off, but we only saw muteless her screaming before getting mad at a guy and brushing him off.
And as the guy says, Lain seems to be (he doesn't say, but I think) a Messenger of "God" from The Wired, I guess?... Weird.
I still wonder about the imagery of what we see whenever she walks out of her house, with that odd purple red shadow.
Now these odd men looking at her. And now she has a brand new high tech navi. (computer).
Thoughts upon Rewatch:
Wired Lain being omnipresent herself (and only present in The Wired and never in the "real world" because that's Taro using a Knights chip to change people's memories...)
I think is working for her "Father" the Employee on this project to make Lain fully sentient with ability to manipulate the simulation.
So, the man who took the Accel drug, became paranoid of Fake Memory Wired Lain. All done by the Father to create chaos.
Meanwhile, the older sister Mika is starts suspecting Lain for being weird.
The Agents are possibly a cause that her "Father" coded to test the simulation as well, because originally on the reset of the simulation in the finale, they're normal electricians.
While the girls mistake Fake Memory Wired Lain who they hung out with for "Real" Developer Lain.
The accel drug is probably another cause from the Father. As a way to test the simulation into chaos of creating glitched sentients who independently or unconsciously hack the simulation.
Chisa relays that Everyone is Connected. Meaning that they're all AI in the one same simulation. Together.
Yet misunderstanding like the Deluded Not God AI though.
Lain's odd visions of people changing form and another passing through her is another glitch. Probably from her Father to slowly make her conscious that isn't a real normal world.
When her Father continues to talk about commuincation and making friends. I think he means to teach her to appreciate love and friendships for each other, even if they're all AI.
Meanwhile, Mika continues to suspect Lain, wondering how she's changing.
... The ending is still very confusing though.
I don't understand exactly how he had those ideas and thought to shoot himself.
Why was that guy scared of Lain? Just who is Lain to that guy? What is Lain to that guy? He called her something part of the Wired. Wired is similar to our world's "internet". Now it's been confirmed that this story isn't set in our timeline. I want to see more!
It's very evocative of Jacob's Ladder (1990) at the moment. I am deeply fascinated by how willingly Japanese media was exploring existential dread. The "lost generation" was really an important time for artists contemplating somber feelings on a visceral level, something we sort of lost to the post 9/11 anger, I think.
In the same episode where we are introduced to the doubt that Lain might have more than one personality, we get the answer that yes, Lain does have more than one personality. Not only that, she's related to a supposed prophecy, connection or some bizarre shit.
I love where this is going. You start to understand how the creators want to convey the information, and you feel like you're connecting the pieces and making progress. Then suddenly, BOOM—now you have no idea what just happened and have to rethink everything again. This series feels so complex. Every time I want to watch an episode, I have to concentrate completely, or I won't understand anything.
Very eerie and uncomfortable to watch. Can't name shows like this, it's quite unique. Everything is.. off if it makes sense, people don't act like people do, pauses are uncomfortably long. The way Lain looks at people is also yucky, she doesn't even blink.
I already watched the show like 15 years ago, don't remember a thing, but so far it's not that hard to understand as people make it... at least to me and now, when I am not 15 yo. Also I don't think everything should be clear from ep.1, it's a mystery that slowly unravels, you don't want to know who's the murderer in mystery novel in the second chapter. You work your way up, collecting the clues and connecting the dots.
