Will Serfort may lack magic abilities, but his combat ones are amazing. He needs to settle things down with Julius. The dwarves should be respected too, they are also strong and they worked hard for what they have in present.

I wonder if Will is going to learn how to use magic spells in the end, it would be amazing. The Grand Magic Festival sounds cool, but unfortunately, Will cannot go there. Colette will help him a lot in his journey of becoming a Magic Wander and obtaining the necessary credits to have access to Upper Institute.

It was pretty satisfying to see Will smash the two lackey's faces in. But this whole "laggard" and "no-talent" shtick is getting old, and irritating. If it weren't for the sheer high production value, this Harry Potter knock-off series would be absolutely shit on par with most trash series, because the story is the exact same, without any substance besides cliches and tropes.

Kinda going downhill plot wise jumping into the worst Shonen trope, a tournament arc. This episode wasn't all that good either at least not really compared to the start. The whole "let's all pick on this guy" trope is already getting old.

How do you make a story so bland? Salt is more of a spice than whatever they put in this script.

I tried to see it from another angle but each time I am reminded that the MC is bad because "he no magik" and how everything revolves around magic but he can't do it waaaah.

The way the lack of self esteem and confidence is done is so bad, every single aspect of the story is thrown at you through dialogue, direct and with no nuance. Teacher hates magicless boy because he is different, girl likes boy because god knows why, different professor likes boy because he is hard working, random dude hates MC, random other guy hates MC and says it, random dude that is "elite" hates MC and he is racist towards dwarves so he has to say it. Just make these things subtle, show whispers and scoffs and other indicators of such emotions/beliefs.

Oh boy and the lack of world building done right is killing me because the author made Danmachi which has amazing lore and world. We still don't know what is the deal with the dungeon, why are only the students using it, what is the thing with different worlds, who is the girl that is MC's friend, what is the deal with the MC's motivation to be a great wizard, why can't he just be an amazing swordsman that protects or covers for his heroine, why does magic have no drawbacks in this world, why and how come the MC and his room mate are such pals, etc.? How come the MC takes a bowl of hot food to the face for no good reason which he could see coming since 2 weeks ago? Why not make him dodge and take out the henchmen 1 and 2 out while dodging or even cooler, while saving the plate?

I am up to date with Danmachi (anime and LN) and to see this and know it was made by the same author it pains me. IDK how this has a good score, why it doesn't start with a 5.** but i guess it doesnt matter since I will have to drop it.

I wish I could say oh, another Draco wannabe stuck up asshole, they already did that complete with two lackeys like the last Draco wannabe, I'm not falling for it again. And yet, it still played me like a fiddle because it pissed me off and I was so happy to see Will bury low rent Crabbe and Goyle face first into the floorboards and I can't wait to see him kick the crap out of Julius. Although in my defense, they did a great job selling the mood with the direction, music, and performances (so much fun to watch the latest Fairy Tail ep and then switch over to this to see Natsu's VA doing a fantastic work being a total asshole.)

I don't remotely buy him not entering the contest without this plot contrivance. It seems like the only viable path to reach his goal he's spent several episodes proclaiming is all he wants and has spent years working towards. Whatever emotional baggage he's carrying around the series has shown his resolve should be enough to get past that and do what needs doing.

Oh well, even if the writing's never better than mediocre I'm still in for the action and music.

The anime took a definite downturn this week. I know he tries to be meek all the time, but it is actually the reason that he is not accomplishing what he needs to do. STOP WORRYING ABOUT WHAT THE OTHERS SAY, since they're going to say it no matter what you do. Keep that anger within you, and that is how you will accomplish your goal.

Sadly, this looks like it's going to go down the stupid rabbit hole of the MC trying to stay nice up until a point, and that is just not that entertaining anymore.

Well this episode would've been super boring if it wasn't for the beautiful art and animation. Why are all the top students in this show such assholes? And their lackeys all have one-note personalities as well. I wouldn't be able to tell the bullies apart if it wasn't for their hair colors. And of course, it's no surprise that Will is forced to participate in the tournament arc in order to get his revenge. I am a bit of a sucker for tournament arcs though, so hopefully the types of exams administered will be interesting, at the very least.

After a week break, I expected something more than what we got. Which was more or less a set up for the Grand Magic Festival and an introduction to the new villain. He's so comically evil it's hard to take him seriously, but at least he's got the magical power to back it up. Doesn't look like it bothers Will very much, though.

Overall, the first mediocre episode of this series so far.

Not a bad anime to kill time. Good in every aspect except character and story...

There were many characters that disliked Will, but all of them disliked Will for the exact same reason: They were so arrogant and conceited to properly assess the ability of other people, especially magicless Will. Multiple characters had put up a fight with Will in the last 4 episodes, but I can't really tell the difference between these characters. They had exactly the same mindset, treated Will with exactly the same attitude, and wielded equally ostentatious magic.

Even the story of Will fighting without his sword got boring. There were already a full episode showcasing Will fighting with and without his sword. And now in this episode, Will was defeated again twice simply because either he didn't have or couldn't use the sword.

Animation quality kind of tanked after 3 episodes of superb quality. But that is just maybe because they are conserving their frame-budget for the next episodes.

So similar to Mashle yet hundreds of times more cringe. Can't he just punch the lights out of all three of them instead of letting one of them go nuts freezing everything up?
Then he could have dragged them out and dumped them in a dumpster. Easy peasy.

as a manga reader this discussion in particular is fascinating xD
can't blame anyone for their impatience yet character growth, plot development and lore reveals don't happen at the beginning and the adaptation anime adaption is very "slow" cause it doesn't adapt a lot of chapters per episode. There'll be more insights later on I promise.
Wistoria is a shounen and follows a lot of genre tropes admittedly but there's depth to it the anime will eventually catch up with.

I hate these kind of moronic main characters where they are goody two shoes, hard working, six jobs, has a pet which only goes with pure hearted people, loved by everyone, have female admirers which he doesn't even realize exist. Complemented by black-as-black evil no-conflict characters so we know who to root for.

And just so there's no further spot on his resume, he won't fight the villain here ... naah he'll wait for competition. Disgusting. Nothing worse than a show that takes place in a school with competition as main subject. Already seen and ultimately boring setting.

This show had some better art style than most trash these days, but it's no different than any of them. We are suppose to suspend our disbelief to such a level to believe there are no rules in this place and no people making sure there's no unrest. So why have a school anyway. Just stomp into that tower right away if you can freeze people around the city without anyone saying anything.

Just stupid.

Nothing like a good old tournament arc in a battle shonen where our underdog protagonist shows the world what's his worth. We've seen it million times, but somehow we still want to see it again.
@Swagernator you just described the most regurgitated setting to base an anime on. While you might want to see it again, I am so sick of it on the very mention of the idea I get diarrhea.

I mean... why did he hold back his punch? I love this show overall, but the insistence to have his character just incapable of fighting when people point out he's not using magic... it gets old real quick. He literally doesn't have a choice, he can't use magic. Why the fuck is he hesitating? What's he supposed to do, shit out a spell?

EDIT: Why did I have to skip 3/4 of the epsiode to get to anything that was relevant again? Was there even anything worth watching there? I skipped in like 2min increments, I sure didn't see anything that seemed worthwhile...
@Prox1mately but the main arc is the competition. How else are they going to hype up drama for two episodes that might be interesting in whole art 17 episodes down the line. don't worry they'll remind is some more about this upcoming battle, then stall some more with side characters only for the whole thing to fizzle out.

This continues to be one of the few anime I'm really enjoying this season. I like our MC, and I'm happy he stood up for the dwarves (though the damage to the bar set my fur on edge a bit).

With all the BLATANT foreshadowing that Will was going to be in the Festival, I wondered how they would finally convince him. I was pleased that it was through righteous anger in defense of friends.

Pfft... "Bad guys" in this show are so comically bad! They even have the "look at my crazy evil smile" faces. Ridiculous! +All of them seem retarded and are already guaranteed to fail miserably when facing MC. Like, was Will really in danger in that Pub? Despite having his hands frozen, it seemed like he could easily kill the ice-guy at any moment but didn't.
Now that we know of 4 faction scouts, it's safe to predict how Will will advance despite low credits. After humiliating the ice-guy, Someone will vouch for him.
I guess I'll hope this show won't be that painfully predictable. Maybe we'll get some twist?

I find it interesting when an anime in this kind of settings, the MC is hated by everyone except a select few or group(s). They hated the MC for no apparent good reason except the MC is bad at something. There's almost no kind hearted people around that will simply just treat the MC or people with kindness and respect if they think you're worthless. They all appear to be extremely self-centered and arrogant. I know some people would say this is an anime, a fantasy world so who cares, but I just thought it was funny. Just like the other anime that is currently airing right now, the MC was abandoned by the goddess and his classmates because they think he's worthless, or that just simply a common tropes?

This episode introduced us a lot of characters, that I feel like they will be important in the future, especially since they appear in the opening, and they all appear to be quite strong. Julius has to be the most annoying character I've seen in a while, he can be even worse than Sion, right from the get go you could see he is a show-offer, and in needing of external approval.

The animation was really good as usual, special at the beginning with all the spells, it was amazing to see!
We also got a lot of info from the setting of that world, and it seems we are now getting to a new arc, with the festival coming up.
I wonder why Will didn't just humuliated Julius right at the tavern, because it was clear the ice wasn't strong enough to hold him. Was it just an excuse for the plot to move on?
Also, I'm really liking Colette's character, she really seems to be supportive of Will, even if he really can't spell a single magic, and is always trying to help achieve his goal. A really supportive friend. Will's roomate also seems really protective of him. I really wonder if he's a male, since many pointed it out last episode, and the voice actor really is ambiguous.
Anyway, not really found of the "comedic" parts of the show though, not really my thing. But it's for sure a good anime, and I wonder why is the score going lower each day, since the quality of the episodes, so far, has been the same.

5 weeks in and they still have to show us how much of a lousy wimp the MC is. Ridiculous !
At this point MC should wear contacts, squeeze his eyes, get a manly haircut, speak in a deeper and more dominant manner and mop the floor with the magician nerds. No, the 2 minutes at the end aren't enough.

Muh, slow start and world building. Not like this. At this pace MC will still be a sissy in 7 episodes.

Anyone notices that MC is the only guy, outside his roommate, who has big round eyes and a girly haircut ? Just why ? Why is the warrior the wimpiest beta on campus ?
Oh, and school tournament. Woooooooooow...

Outside of animation this anime is pure garbage.

A lot about this show really isn't sitting well with me, which is a shame, because I liked episode 1 and the animation was great and I quite like danmachi. Why would they even bully a "no magic" person that aces all the theory exams? Shouldn't they be asking him to come up with better spells for them or help them understand stuff? Magic in these settings is basically a science so a smart scientist, even if incapable of using the stuff himself, should be lauded, not put down.

Then we have the next issue. Why is Will trying to become a magia vander? That doesn't even make sense for him to be. He should be trying to find a way to allow a warrior into the tower, not be a mage that can't do magic. Given that a person at the top of the tower is a childhood friend and he has inhuman levels of physical prowess able to compete with and beat the person closest to being a magia vander in combat, why wouldn't they just let him in the tower? How could the friend, who is at the apex of society and government power, not have the power to let her friend visit? Moving back to Will though, why is this his plan. He goes to the school and says "hey, can I become magia vander" and they say "nope, you gotta be able to do magic" and he says "ok, I'll just go to school here anyway and hope you change your mind on this instead of a much more practical solution". Then, when it's clearly not working out and he clearly will fail his goal, he...does nothing. He doesn't try and come up with a new strategy or plan to somehow get way more credits, he doesn't even quit, he just keeps on doing what already isn't working.

On top of that, presumably the tower is focused on the impending conflict with the celestial host. Shouldn't they be trying to use every tool they can? A superhuman warrior should be fantastic news. if they can increase their combat power by somehow turning all the massive population of non magicals into people even close to Will's level, they should be thrilled and think how utterly unstoppable it'd be if either he could eventually cast magic or they could figure out how to let a powerful mage have the same level of physical prowess.

This episode in particular was horrible. How did he lose to that golem just because somebody said something bad about him. What? This dude is superhuman capable of decimating with ease monsters these top students would get obliterated by but then some lame golem gets him? It just doesn't make sense. Same with him not dodging the thrown food. I also really question his battle tactics vs mages. He has effectively super speed and strength but poor range. Step one should be gapclose and stop them from using their wand. With how fast we've seen him move, how did julius even have time to cast a spell or complain. Dude should have just woken up suddenly in the hospital with no idea what even happened.

I love the complete nonsense of him not beating up julius right there even though he had zero hesitation effectively sucker punching his goons unconscious. Goons aren't really people in these shows though so I guess they didn't count.

I'm hoping the author just didn't really know what to do with the series early on and it'll pick up later when it gets to the real meat of the world's lore, but man is it getting tougher to hold out hope. Very worrying to see the production issues cause both a delay AND a drop in quality.

I don't see much in the way of consequences. As what?

The difference between Will and Asta from Black Clover...
Not only Asta was "screaming" to everyone that he would become the wizard king even before he got its anti-magic sword, once he got it, he didn't let anyone talk shit about him or his friends. 20 episodes later and he was willing to fight several high-ranked wizard in a room full of hostile people (including captain) "just because" they disrespected Noel whom he only met a few weeks ago.
That's Black Clover.
Wistoria is about the guy who has just shown he's stronger (easily) than the 4th guy (fire guy) and just won against a teacher, not even fighting seriously against the ice guy because NO ONE KNOW.
It's starting to be infuriating.
Just beat them up.
And is there not a single magic who can just teleport a sword ?
No ?
'Cause the author want Will to lose without sword so he can win with a sword. OK if it's done once, but it's already being done twice... in 4 episodes....
I don't mind MC losing but not because he's holding back.
Also, in what world, defeating monster stronger than fire guy only brings 10 points out of 12 000 ? That's just bad writing.

Looking forward to ice-jackass to put his arms and head to the floor and apologize. Their shop definitely got messed up, but maybe the magic kid can fix and also likely appreciate putting those jackasses in their place.

Not sure why he didn't punch the Golem, maybe he knows a punch isn't enough so didn't bother. Or maybe he has an issue where doesn't like attention, that's why he can do so good with writing and alone in the dungeon or 1 on 1.

Amazing how they can show what it means for Will ti have no magic among all of them. And what he does for living to be able to be at the academy. Amazing. the fact that all of the students have wands which are weapons and Will isn't allowed to carry a sword is bonkers to me. what if he has a magic that can be brought out through swordsmanship. also he is forced to go into battle in front of his class with a wand he cant use when he could have easily taken that golem out with a sword. it doesn't make much since to have such a stupid rule imo.
