| Frieren has exactly what is needed to surpass FMAB: top tier production value + the right mix of things that can appeal to both the young (fantasy action) and the expert (contemplativeness) anime watchers. Some young anime fans will hate the slow parts and some expert fans will hate the battle shounen elements, but both sides were necessary to make it the #1 anime. So, do I think Frieren deserves the #1 spot? I'd love to say yes since I do think it's the best anime among all the ones that ever reached the #1 spot on MAL, but... I feel that not being a complete story will hurt its score (obviously affected by recency bias right now) in the long run. Especially if a second season will come out and it most likely won't be as well crafted, since some people like to give the same score to every season of a franchise (so an inferior sequel will have a negative effect on the score of the previous seasons too). Even ignoring the possibilty of a sequel, MAL users usually give a lot of importance to a proper ending so I don't think Frieren will keep the #1 spot forever; the percentage of positive reviews is also way lower than every other non-sequel anime in the top 20. |

| I think frieren has h8gh quality animation, but I think that is not much of a factor in my general fav anime. Frieren appeals to one of the widest audiences so that is another reason how it can take #1 spot for average scores. My fav anime are not really for all demographics. |

| I love the series (I have only read the manga) but I don't think it deserves the top spot. To be fair, even full metal alchemist doesn't deserve the top spot imo (it is an amazing story and should still probably be top 5 but not the best) If the one piece adaptation by wit studios does well then that should probably take the top spot. |

| @SupremeGod They have good production value + things that can make them beloved by both young and expert anime fans just like Frieren, but they also tell a complete story which is a huge advantage. Their scores also fell over time, it's just that other anime fell harder. |

| I think it just makes sense that Frieren is #1. I'm not saying it is like the best anime oat because that is completely subjective (like you could get 100 different answers from 100 different people) but it is a very difficult anime to not like. It has insane animation and great production quality overall (great OST, great character designs, etc.), a great start to the show, a compelling storyline that can appeal to anyone with nothing controversial surrounding it (like it has no pedos or fan service or anything of the sort) and it also has both really slow pacing worldbuilding moments and great fights that extend the magic power system of the show. It is also a relatively new IP that had no haters beforehand (it came out no nowhere so it was taken by the community like a breath of fresh air and a pleasant surprise) and it doesn't have an annoying fanbase. Like it was basically the perfect combination of everything that a "#1 spot" anime would have to strive for. Take for example Attack on Titan. I know a lot of people that would argue that it is the greatest anime of all time but only one of its seasons is inside the top 20 (which is 5th right now). The thing is that as much as people generally love AOT it is such a massive anime that it will inevitably have a lot of haters. It also has a story with a lot of heavy themes, the 3rd and 4th season are greatly different in setting and tone and it even changed studios midway through that. |
