Battle shounen is a sub-category of shounen.

Every battle shounen is a shounen, but not every shounen is a battle shounen.

There are also degrees of battle shounen (not just 100% or 0%) and sometimes it's not clear where to draw the line of calling it battle shounen.

Even in common language, Shounen has several definitions, which overlap a lot

1. Every anime adapted from Shounen demographic manga (including things like Nisekoi and Ika Musume).
This is the definition generally used by the MAL database with the Shounen tag. Of course, some manga magazines' demographics are not as neatly categorized as that, and i think you might still find Shounen anime that are not strictly Shounen manga adaptations, but this definition is pretty consistent throughout the database.

2. Every Shounen demographic manga (particularly you can also use this to categorize original or light novel-based anime, like Konosuba and Evangelion).
This is the definition that makes most sense in a manga context. In an anime context you don't really use this definition, except if you want to be cheeky and claim Cowboy Bebop is a Shoujo

3. Shounen anime/manga that also uses the tropes commonly associated with the "Battle Shounen" genre (basically superpower fighting). It is rumored that Weekly Shounen Jump contractually requires the mangaka to add some of these tropes in :-DD
This is probably the most common association with the word Shounen under normal circumstances, and of course, it can get pretty subjective of what's included.

4. Anything that uses the tropes from Battle Shounens, even if not strictly related to a Shounen manga (e.g. One Punch Man, Fate, many battle harems, and chinese/korean stuff)
Basically if you see an anime that feels a lot like a Battle Shounen, you might be tempted to call it a Shounen, even if it technically isn't under the other definitions. This definition i think also makes most sense when you use it as an adjective like "Shouneny" or "Shounenesque"

Definitions 3 and 4 are also definitions for "battle shounen" (purists will only consider the 3rd :-DD), but definitions 1 and 2 are not, which can be a cause for confusion when the term Shounen is used coloquially.

Shounen is technically just a demographic. "Battle Shounen" is a made up western term for a particular type of Anime that is suppose to be adopted from Shounen Manga. But it's so loosely thrown around in this medium that just about anything could be a considered a "Battle Shounen" even if it's technically not even adopted from a Managa source. "Battle Shounen" is just like any western made up terms used to describe certain types of Anime just how like Ecchi, Hentai, Moe, CGDCT, etc... became coined.

"is shonen different than battle shonen?"

Shounen - demographic (teenage boys).
Battle shonen - genre. Subset of the action and fantasy genres dedicated for teenage boys. What makes it different from your generic action are the power levels, the tree of skills, the magic system/systems, the rules of the fights and several specific tropes.

Like all battle shounen is shounen, but not all shounen is battle shounen...there's no proper answer provided in this poll.
(PS similarly all battle shounen is action shounen, but not all action shounen is battle shounen.)

Shounen is a demographic while battle shounen, is a sub-category, since not all shōnen have or focus on battles.

Why are your poles always like this? the pole answers never have the actual appropriate answers.

Shounen is a demographic that is decided by certain publisher magazines, it's a manga only thing, which is why you never hear people call anime originals or other types of adaptations, shounen, seinen, shoujo and so on.

Battle shounen is that, if it's an action series with fighting! that's all it is.

Battle shounen is just a made-up term to differentiate those that are packed with action from those that are not.

Battle shounen are shounen series with fights... generally superpowered fights like popular series like Naruto, One Piece, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen, Boku no Hero Academia, etc. while non-battle shounen are series like Horimiya, Yuukoku no Moriarty, Bakuman, Gin no Saji, Hikaru no Go, etc. Also, the person who stated that there is a 'rumor' about Shounen Jump contractually requiring those tropes is FALSE. You just have to look up the Shounen Jump series to see that (if you organize by score) there are more than a dozen that show up on just the FIRST PAGE that are NOT battle shounen that are or were printed in Jump Weekly. Bakuman and Hikaru no Go are amoung those and neither are battle shounen. So not sure where you heard that 'rumor' but it's a false one. While battle shounen are undoubtedly more common in Jump Weekly, it definitely not a requirement.
