The last decade has seen an incredible increase in the amount of yuri that is both portrayed in subcontext within some anime and as a central theme in others. What began as a discreet topic in manga has increased in audience and steadily made its way into anime. Now that we have began a new decade, let's look back at the past 10 years and voice how we feel about what we saw and vote for what you believe was the best yuri anime. I've included the most spoken about and favorited anime featured on the club's anime relations list from Noir airing a long while ago to Sasameki Koto finishing in Dec 2009. It's a really big poll =P

Mai-Hime: Aired: Sep 30, 04 - Mar 31, 05
A group of 13 girls with intertwining relationships have the ability to control elements and summon mechanical guardians to battle mysterious foes and the Searrs Foundation.
Maria-sama ga Miteru: Aired: Jan 8, 04 - Mar 28, 09 (4 seasons)

Noir: Aired: Apr 6, 01 - Sep 28, 01
Assassin Mireille Bouquet was contacted by a mysterious Japanese girl, Kirika Yumura, asking for her to take a 'pilgrimage' to the past', triggering a long chain of battles onward to solving their mystery.

This topic is begging for a long response just as a tribute to each of those titles and more. But to keep it simple for now...

Maria-sama ga Miteru - my first and forever anime love. If it's considered yuri, Haibane Renmei would fall into second place. In terms of pairings, Mai Hime and Shiznat would be drawn with the Marimite girls, but the series itself was average.

El Cazador - I love it because it's not technically a romance, but we see how the relationship between Nadie and Ellis develops from being strangers to a simple companionship to a friendship and finally to something deeper than that. It's pretty realistic. Ellis shows her growing affection without any hesitation, and Nadie gladly accepts it.

The second place goes to Mai-HiME/Otome.

2nd place: Kannazuki no Miko

Btw, Caanan is yuri?
Didn't get that feeling, to me it seemed that Caanan and Maria were just very close.

So I was the only one voting for Simoun? ^^" This one is my personal fav', but I guess MSGM is the one that really did the best job to "promote" yuri in the anime realm. I wish we had more shows like this one, with real chara development through several seasons.
But still, Simoun was magic beyond words for me, so it gets my vote : )

i havent seen a lot of them, but knowing my experience a lot of those anime dont really have yuri and/or shujo-ai, the girls are just close friends and stuff like that. Only a person with 'sick' fantasies like me, with her 'yuri googles' will think that the things going on between the main characters is more then friendship, while other people might not find anything romantic between them. I liked Sasameki koto a lot, but definetly one of the best yuri animes there is most likely will be STRAWBRRY PANIC! Thats for what my vote will go.

I've only watched Kiddy Grade and R.O.D. the TV from the list... so Kiddy Grade - but this is more like a little ecchi. ^w^
...
and all other anime are on my watching/plan to watch list. ^w^ so... I'll watch them someday and I'm sure there are anime (yuri/shoujo-ai) that are better than Kiddy Grade - but just at the quantity of shoujo-ai/yuri. :)

I gave my vote for Maria-sama ga Miteru. Overall the whole serie is just amazing with great characters and relaxing atmosphere.
Even though Strawberry Panic is also amazing, Marimite is just overall the best imo ♥

My vote have to go to Strawberry Panic as well, one of the first Yuri animes I watched and it displays so many different kind of relationships and struggles one might experience in life. All of the characters are very likeable and it never really gets too slow nor out of hand with ecchi stuff that might make it harder to take serious.

Also it got a very split ending, Nagis does get the love she is longing for but in the proses deeply hurt her very best and most trusted friend.

Candy Boy is another good anime with great atmosphere and it's very well drawn. It's more focused on the relationship between sisters with confused feelings who feel like they are growing apart though, and as such it might be a bit harder to relate to.
And it's tad on the short inchoherent side, but still very watchable and heartwarming, and I would definitely recommend it to people who like Yuri anime =)

I don't know what to choose. On the one hand Strawberry Panic is my first shoujo-ai anime. I was shocked! That strange feeling of warmth and kindness, which forces you to cry and then to smile. you feel that characters have souls, when they sad - you're sad too. I'll never forget it. And I really like how it ends.

But on the other hand in Kannazuki no Miko (my second ^_^) I see the best shoujo-ai relation: self-sacrifice. I think this is the best proof of love. I has worried about feelings between Chikane and Himeko more than about other normal pair in other animes. End killing me... but then I was happy again.

Still I think that the Strawberry Panic and Kannazuki no Miko are the best shoujo-ai animes ever. I like them equally, but Strawberry Panic was first <3

I am not surprised Strawberry Panic is in the lead, but I am a bit surprised by the response to Aoi Hana. I assumed it would just be neck and neck between Marimite and SP!.

My vote goes to Marimite, though Aoi Hana is definitively the best actually fully canonically yuri anime I've seen to date. But Marimite practically launched me into the genre, and it's been the one yuri franchise that keeps coming back and is enduring, and has penetrated the anime scene, since it spawns so many references, parodies, cameos and rip offs.

So for having four anime incarnations between 2004 and 2009 (that's five years of animated Marimite!), it gets my vote.

Let's hope we'll see more of it in the 2010s.

I really annoyed to see Strawberry Panic get the most vote. For me SP is a product to fulfill yuri fanboys' dreams than an honest show about lesbianism for both genders.

To claim Strawberry Panic as best yuri show is much like to claim Gravitaton as best yaoi show. Both may won the style but not the content.

I really loved Mai-Hime, but not for the Yuri. I liked it for the plot and action stuff more. The yuri was an unexpected bonus ^_^ so despite that being my favorite series on here, I say NO.
1. I voted strawberry panic becuase i thought it was the funniest one. I mean, if you watched Mari-mite, you have to admit, SP was clearly a parody genre, and hey, I lolled. some may disagree but whatever. Anyway, Strawberry panic was terribly slow paced compared to the manga and the anime tried to turn it into something it wasn't, it probably should have been 13 eps like most of the marimites. Now that I've actually finished all of mari-mite, I'm going to watch it again. i dont think it was a yuri fanboy genre because it was so long and dragged out.

2. KNM was terrible. but at the time I loved it. It is partially responsible for getting me my first and GF (I'm a girl). so it takes second by default.

Marimite is great at making you feel like the girls were really in love, with that slow build thing, but I'm the type of person that thinks if they don't at least kiss...or even IMPLY a kiss...the first time I tried to watch it i barely made it through the first season and gave up on the second for years. it was too slow for me. the second time when i paid attention to subtext it made more sense... so it was nice that it was directed toward girls, but honestly I was more interested in what was happening to the brother, and I think yaoi's gross!

why no shoujo sect /._.\ or do I even need to ask -_-;;; even for two eps it still had good character development (and even though it was porn it didn't really feel like it when i was watching)

yay for newer yuri like aoi hana and SK, but FAIL ENDINGS WTF. wait until the manga is over for once or at least make second seasons! JEEZ.

in conclusion we need BETTER yuri.

Strawberry Panic is the ultimate yuri anime. Men don't exist. They're assumed to not exist, and no one questions why they don't exist.

What separates SP from the rest is that the girls were in genuine relationships of a romantic nature with each other. It wasn't a senpai/kouhei relationship, or just close friends, etc. No, these girls liked each other the way a heterosexual man would like a heterosexual woman.

This response took a long time to type. I'll never look at a push-up the same ever again.

Shoujo Sect is actually three episodes long. And it has amazing development and a good story considering that it's a hentai.

And I guess that's why it's not here. As amazing as it was, it's still hentai. Given a few more episodes and less... hentai-like feelings, it could have been a great OAV that just so happened to have sex in it.

But it's still porn. It's just good porn.

The best in terms of story and character quality is MariMite, which got my vote.

The best in terms of yuriness is Strawberry Panic!, despite its trashiness, for an open and positive display of lesbianism in spite of the fact that no men seem to exist within it. It must be the near-future where that bone-marrow semen substitute has been perfected.

I'm a little sad not to see Kanamemo and Nanoha StrikerS not on the list. On Kanamemo's end, you have Yuuki and Yume, possibly the most positively enforced lesbian couple to date. They're happy with each other, share realistic moments of affection, and because it bears repeating, they're happy! No drama! Just happy realistic lesbian love!

On Nanoha's end... come on, they have a kid! And if you need further guidance, look now further than the giant bed!

If one were to just describe Nanoha to someone, it'd sound like just about the gayest thing ever:

"Oh yeah, it's about these two girls who have spent most of their lives together, they live in the same house, sleep in the same bed, have a kid who calls them both "Mama", and one of them goes off to work while the other one stays home and takes care of the kid."

But I'm just watching StrikerS and got through the first season and A's, and Nanoha and Fate are so asexual... I don't think they're even interested in romance, just each other and their kid and their jobs.

Damn it, I made it sound like they're gay AND married now.

EDIT:

As for Kanamemo, I guess it didn't make that much of a splash in the yuri community. I don't know why it wasn't added, but see how forgettable it is-- even I forgot to notice it wasn't on the poll.

Bleh, I haven't voted yet! I'll do it now..

I thought Aoi Hana was so subtle and comely. =) I loved how the characters appeared realistic; some characters were innocent and some had their ulterior motives, and how they would play with each other's hair, compliment each other, and spend time together in their 'spot' to share thoughts and be girls. It definitely had a more emotional overtone that appealed to me ranging from tense during dating someone, to acting aloof while being in the school's drama club, to the feelings Fumi had inside for her first love. It had one of the cutest kiss scenes. I totally wish it would have been able to include some critical things that happened in the manga afterwards.

Simoun was executed well considering it's hard to make a story involving a paradox. It was also very colorful and the clothing designs were interesting. The main couple went through a lot of progression and different phases in their relationship. The ending arc left unanswered questions that picked at the brains of some watchers where as the ending left me with like a hollow/sad feeling inside, yet I was happy. It's one of my favorite anime.

I loved El Cazador de la Bruja and Canaan because of such strong and close relationships between the characters. The music in El Cazador was great and the so were the action scenes in Canaan; and they both bring you to real locations on the planet from a Japanese point of view. Ellis and Nadie was the first couple I've grown a fan of. Yami to Boushi was the first I've saw and then I watched all but one of these on the list. I'm gonna cast a vote for either Simoun or Aoi Hana

The problem with Kanamemo is that the series itself wasn't championed (blame Haruka) but Yuuki and Yume definitely were. I saw people watching this online skipping all the squick just to watch these two.

My vote went to Simoun. The amazing story, setting, music, character interactions and atmosphere took me by surprise. So many relationships formed and changed throughout the course of the story. In the end I found myself liking every character, which is quite a feat considering how many there were.

Second and third go to Candy Boy and Aoi Hana. Unlike most other series, Candy Boy threw a developed relationship at you and let you see what the two go through as a couple. It was very short and sweet, which I like. Aoi Hana was an excellent romance story, and I particularly liked the music and animation. The relationships strayed away from idealization, giving you a realistic feel for the troubles the characters went through.

And I think Shoujo Sect deserves to be on the list more than Kiddy Grade or Canaan. I don't think the fact that it's hentai should hold it back. I'm hoping Sono Hanabira's animation gets to be as good as Shoujo Sect's.

Aoi Hana, more realistic, great characters (I have to love Fumi and her determination to stand up every time people let her down... A real and mature yuri manga.

Strawberry panic leading... I understand it attracted a lot of people to the genre but c'mon!

BTW: shouldn't we wait for 2010 to past before voting for best anime of the decade?
