I know for sure, that Chainsaw Man does get a lot of praise for having well-written characters who happen to be women. Even though, it shines in that area the way fandom perceives and treats these characters tells me that they are merely reduced to fetish.

Neon Genesis Evangelion has always been lauded for having complex and realistic female characters. The way fandom had always reduced these characters to mere stereotypes or fetish. Like Asuka, Rei, and Misato being reduced to tsundere, kuudere and Ara ara waifu.

I just similar thing happening in Chainsaw Man fandom. Will this ever end?

What makes it even weirder is Asuka for example is a traumatised young teen yet she still gets sexualised, honestly calling fandoms disturbing is an understatement, it’s what gives anime a weird stereotype instead of treating it like a normal type of television.

I’ll admit there is bait out there such as Ecchi series’ but even completely normal series’ like AOT and Neon Genesis get sexualised, Christ even things such as Pokemon get fully grown men fantasising over certain young appearing characters or even the Pokemon themselves.

To answer your question, no unfortunately it will never end as there is far too many freaks within anime fandoms.

a character can be sexualized and still be well written. CSM and Evangelion are perfect examples of this. like Makima is supposed to be sexy, through and through. it's part of her character. she's supposed to be sexy to both the characters and the audience to lure them into a false sense of security so it hits all the harder when the reveal happens.

my friend dragged me to a comics/manga store a while ago, and the cover of the latest(?) CSM manga volume was literally just a naked woman 😭😭😭
The fan base definitely has a hand in it, but I think the creators did the sexualising first lmao.

@ratliker63 Yes, you're absolutely right.
While it doesn't take away from the fact that many viewers only see female characters as the epitome of sexuality (Pixiv is full of artwork lol), the female characters are well written. Take Himeno, someone other than Makima, it's a well-defined character with her own story, motivation, it's not an empty big-breasted hottie designed by Fujimoto as a fanservice object.

Stop beeing such a sensitive ninny^^

These characters are loved, not only for how they look like, but for their ACTUAL personality. A lot of Anime girls don't even come close feeling this fresh.

Some dudes have fetishes. Whats the Problem? Leave them be and enjoy some cartoon girls feeling hella unique, regardless.
You're watching Chainsaw Man. One of the most over the top, ridiculous Shows made in recent years and you're worried about females not beeing portrayed fairly? xD

Watch some Slice of Life Romance. There are plenty characters fitting your criteria of a "good", complex woman. Not everything has to be for everyone.
Chainsaw Mans absurdity and weirdness is it's strong point. I don't wanna see good, down to earth girls featuring in this Show, dude^^ It's not what this Anime is about.

all of them are very well written. and ecchi fan service is not a bad thing at all in my opinion. and in case of chainsaw man it doesnt hurt the anime/manga in the slightest. only adds to the experience. it is part of anime culture and I don't want to see it ever change.

Well put one of the few reasons why I stopped interacting with jjk and csm fandoms almost completely they are a bunch of freaks in disguise ofc not all of them are like that but from mostly what I hv been exposed to they are way too extreme with their intensions and comments on every jjk or csm posts with any male/female character.

It's a work of fiction. Don't watch it if you don't like the content. I'm sure there are stories and characters more suited to your tastes. The creator doesn't owe you anything and don't blame the fandom.

I mean, the sexualization will always get more attention than the depth. It’s easier to notice for one. Two, it’s instantly appealing. Character on the other hand, takes time to build and get audiences invested in.

So of course shows will sexualize their characters … b/c you guarantee yourself some audiences that way. American cable TV dramas did the same thing a lot of the time. Just more mature and I guess safe in its presentation.

Chainsaw man does it a bit different from normal anime in that it’s not shamelessly degenerate presentation. It’s very weird though.

I don’t think the story does a good job of respecting their female characters in general considering they all revolve around the main character Denji, since he’s “ultra chad” and OP. In general, though, people will always fetishize female characters. If you go on pixiv you’ll find nsfw of every anime character you can think of. I don’t know if that will ever stop.

@thunderkitten13 I mean, Denji's the main character and the story's about him, he's the center of attention most of the time, but i wouldn't call that everyone revolving around him

Why is it that these days people seem to treat drawings and cartoons like they're real people? like who cares if they're being sexualized? they're just drawings they don't exist and can't be hurt in real life.

My point is that he is the one driving the entire story. None of the other female characters have any influence over the outcome. In a competent story, every character would feel like they can affect the story in some meaningful way. Regardless, I never said it was only females that get sexualized.

with all due respect, nobody said what makima is doing isnt wrong or just as bad, it's just that this conversation - as you said yourself - is about the women of csm and how they have been sexualized. again, i see what you mean, however there is no need to to steer away from the issue being discussed by bringing in the classic "but this happens to men too!1!!1" argument. its just annoying and disrespectful.

@kurrohm Apreciate the respect, but i will also respectfully ask, in what way is it disrespectful?

Personally i find it a lot more disrespectful to only acknowledge one side and ignore the other when in reality both are affected

Granted here we're talking about fictional anime characters, but i've seen such topics over and over again talking about irl stuff and it's honestly quite sickening the amount of people who will only act horrified when such things happen to one gender but completely ignore it when it happens to the other or worse even claim the opposite never happens

Kinda agree that sexualization was intended to make it more appealing to the audience.

I admit that I don’t find anime with not good looking characters enticing to watch. It’s just how you get people watching, other than good plot of course. It also helps that profiting off merch from those characters is another thing kept in mind when formulating them as there is a business side of things, they just have to capitalize on that. Who wouldn’t miss an opportunity for more money?

The over sexualizing and fetishizing the characters to a degenerate degree is the problem, but that’s on the person itself and sadly there’s a lot of them.

Answering back to the question if it’s the fandom’s fault? Yes and no. The authors needed that extra appeal so they had to, but some fans are taking it too far.

discussions about " well written female characters " in any pieces of media are always garbage for the sole reason that people have extremely dumb reasons and standards to hate on Characters and/or say they're badly written that they will never apply to male Characters

the biggest example is Sakura, who while i agree is a bad Character, people hate her because " her Character is just an accessory to another male Character " which is a garbage critcism for the sole reason the same thing can be said about tons of other Characters who are also men like Naruto and Sasuke for example, yet they don't get hate for that reason

i can explain more but lol this isn't Reddit

Is it true that the Chainsaw Man fandom reduces the female characters to fetishes? As far as I can tell this only happens in jokes, like the Makima dog memes. Maybe there’s corners of the fandom that are like this, but I’m not aware of them.

As for the Eva point, those are just related archetypes. I have seen people write off well written female characters based on archetypes they fit into, but that’s just bad critics, not fans. Fans use these descriptors in casual conversation because they’re a useful shorthand, not because they don’t understand the character as deeper than them.

Women are considered beautiful sex for a reason. That's why character design and visual appeal usually takes presence over quality of their personality and writing.
That's why male characters are usually have more depth than female ones. They can't compensate with eye candy.
Sad, but true. Obviously, both merit and visual appeal would be the best, but that's what audience values and that's what authors are delivering.

@DigiCat Dunno where you took that stat from, but wahteva

I mean, you could just go see for yourself top favourited characters here on MAL.
Top female is Kurisu, who is 14th total. She is actually well written female character, who deserves all the praise she gets. Next up is Mikasa on 17th, who is still considered by many as weakest aspect of the show. And so on... In top 50 you have only 15 female characters. That's measly 30% at least some of which are just shallow waifu baits from popular shows.
It's almost as if there is a reason for that.
