Regardless of the other symbolism surrounding the final scene with the tree, one idea I've begun to entertain is that it's a test from Isayama to his audience. Those who have not recognized what he wanted to say, may see it as merely a cruel cycle with nothing but pain, but those who have taken the ideas to heart, will look past the cruelty, spotting the optimistic differences, in order to see the glimpses of beauty that lie beyond it. They just need to return the love was given to them by the world.

I don’t see why people hate the ending so much. Definitely not the best episode tho but it was to be expected considering the highs of the series. There were good and bad things in this final episode. I will list as many of them as I can. My opinion tho so people might disagree.

Good - Jean’s and Connie’s death scene - Probably the most emotionnal moment of this episode

Mixed feelings - They survived - I’m glad they are still part of the gang at the end. But I always hate when characters just come back to life. At least in this case it kind of make sense since all titans turned back into humans but I feel like some of the titans including either Jean or Connie should have died before they turned back into humans just to make it more impactful. It was a f***ing dramatic moment when they realized the smoke gonna turn them all into titans. Just for all of them to be alright in the end anyway. That’s always lame

Good - The ending credit - I love that the imagery was just the tree and from there we see society thriving before seeing the nukes coming down. Whatever happens and whatever we do, the wars will never end. As Erwin once said, there will be conflicts until there is one human being left or less

Bad - Plot armor - Everytime the characters were in trouble they were saved by some bs. Don’t put them in situations where it’s impossible for them to survive. And if you do, at least don’t do that like 30 times in one episode

Mixed feeling - Mikasa kissing Eren - She just loved him so much. I’m sure there are other series or movies that I’ve seen something similar before. That’s more weird since she only was given a head. Don’t get me wrong. Mikasa is f***ed up for doing that. But I get that she just loved him that much so I don’t mind. Then after talking with Armin, she left with the head. All alone… people won’t give him a proper burial, she said. Now just imagine what she did with the head when there was nobody around

Good - The baby scene - Even tho I was thinking to myself, ok so the rumbling will stop there because that baby is surviving for sure. But those people didn’t know they were saving it while doing this. So I guess the thought process was: don’t let him fall to his death, instead bring him closer to the titans so he can witness the chaos and die either from being trampled or burned to death. That being said, I liked it. I think it’s pretty heartwarming to see everyone coming together to instinctively just try and save one baby from the cliff. Then look at this dude ending up with the baby knowing damn well he just lost that game of musical chair and now he is stuck with this shit like wtf am I gonna do with it now

Good - Levi - just Levi being the GOAT as always. He didn’t get to kick Eren’s ass but at least he killed Zeke. Good on him. Long live the short king

Bad - didn’t get enough of dead titans vs dead titans - It was great that some dead ancient titans took control of their body and joined the alliance in fighting the other titans but we should have seen more of that. Like I don’t know, a good 5 min of Ymir losing control over the titans and some just turn against others because they get their will to save people back. It seems to have happened in the background. We see Armin being held by the goat titan before he explodes as the colossal. There were probably more random titans helping them that we didn’t see and I think that’s bad. What we should have gotten is a titan All out war/Free for all. What we got is, I guess all this is happening more in the background

Good - Eren’s breakdown with Armin - I know lots of people seem to hate that moment were Eren cry like a little bitch because he is jalous. But I loved it. He is human after all and humans all want to be the one for the person they love. Until this point since the beginning of season 4, Eren just acted like a tool for mass genocide/peace/destruction. But that scene showed him being a normal human being with emotions. Did I laugh when he started crying and saying he wants to keep Mikasa for himself? Yes, way too loud. Do I think it’s bad they did that with Eren’s character? No, humans acting like humans. I like that

Bad - Not enough build up for the finale - They tried to hype people up a bit with the marketing but I think the best thing to hype people up would be to not release the last episode 6 months ago. What I like about week to week episodes is that we are left wanting more and we will get more soon enough. Which builds up hype. I probably was hyped after season 4 part 3 part 1 and wanted to see more, but I can’t remember clearly if I was because it’s been 6 months. Momentum is key and they didn’t use it

Bad - No opening song and the ending song definitely was one of the endings of all time - It was to be expected but another The Rumbling would have been greatly appreciated

Bad - Ymir only was in love with Fritz - That’s stupid. That’s what kept her going for 2000 years and now she wants to kill humanity. No fucking way she would even remember him at this point. Do you remember people who had the most impact on you even just, 50 years, 20 years, 10 years after you lost contact with them? We forget about important people from our past even during our small lifetime. Clearly after 2000 years she would not care nor even remember Fritz. But no she remembers him and she loves him. I didn’t even talk about the fact that he abused her. It just adds another level of bs to this.

Good - Bertholt didn’t get eaten after destroying the wall - THE thing I could never make sense of is Eren’s titan stepmother not eating Bertholt and just ignoring him after he destroyed the first wall. Never would I have thought it would get answered now that Eren actually controlled the titan and led her to his mother because Bertholt had to live.

Good - Haters shitting on it so I didn’t have huge expectations - Thank you I guess for being haters and calling that the worst anime ending. I was positively surprised about the ending since I was expecting dogshit. It was far from great but it wasn’t bad neither

Good - Some existential questions about the meaning of life - I always like a bit of existential questions. Zeke and Armin talking about life only trying to multiply but why tho and it’s the small moments that matters. I loved it. Then it’s a bit far fetched that…

Bad - …Zeke "Should we even try to stay alive? What’s bad about dying"
Armin "I like racing on the hill with Eren and Mikasa and losing every time"
Zeke "I never thought about that. Thanks Armin for helping me realize, life does matter"
That’s a bit stupid that it’s all it took to convince him but whatever

Bad - Paradise didn’t get destroyed - okay that’s just me overanalyzing shit but in season 4 part 2 ending credit, we saw images of Paradise destroyed (abandoned city, destroyed castle, desert throne room). I was sure it was foreshadowing how it would end. The same way season 2 ending foreshadowed the past. That would have been so great. But nah it just never happened. Kind of happened with the nukes in the ending credit but it was so far in the future. None of those building still looked like that by this time so it wasn’t foreshadowing this

That’s all folks. I can’t think of other things from the top of my head. I liked this episode. I loved the series as a whole. Might be my favorite anime of all time still or second behind Code Geass. The ending didn’t ruin every great moments from before like *cough* *cough* Game of thrones. I will still rewatch the anime and might even enjoy this episode more on a rewatch.

so the day has finally come where it all ends in the anime. i think i want to reflect on what this series means to me as a whole rather than the contents of this final episode specifically. it's been over a year since i read the manga so i'm numb to the ending by this point. this anime was the very first anime i ever watched and to me is incredibly special for not only what it is itself, but for being my introduction to so many anime and manga that i have come to love wholeheartedly and i simply would not have any of those so many incredible experiences if it weren't for attack on titan. there was a day where i thought that absolutely nothing would ever top attack on titan for me. standing here now, that is no longer true, however, the impact this series has had on my life is immeasurable. the experience of this series as well as the bridge it created to so many other wonderful experiences is something i am incredibly grateful for and i couldn't be happier to have been put on this path. i feel there is so much more i have to say but it would just be the ramblings of more or less what i've already said over and over again. so i'll leave it at this, well one more thing.

thank you, attack on titan. thank you for being such a monumental part of my life. regardless of how many other series top you for me and no matter how long it is since you've finished, you will always hold a very special place in my heart regardless. so one more time, thank you.

(this is the corniest and sappiest shit i've ever publicly posted but i'm in a vulnerable state right now so let me have my moment)

@YamsMuncher It's looking even way worse after the episode finally aired, 9,000 votes later :\ it was 6.7 when I posted that, at least. Now it's 6.2.

I don't like going by IMDb votes, either, but they said MAL was the only place AoT was getting hate.

Moral of the story: History always repeats itself. You cannot fight for peace with death and violence. People need to stop killing each other but we can't have that because we live in a world of darkness with higher power. Satan controls this world until Jesus comes back and crushes him under his foot.

I loved the ending. I understand why some people don't though. To me, combined with the journey, the ending was a 10/10. I do not care about the 'message it sends' because I was not watching for that. I wish we could have seen them all reunite at the end and be happy, but that is what I end up wishing for when I finish all anime. It was a good 10 years :)

I guess that's it the end, there was a lot of backlash when the manga ended and as an anime-only I finally get to witness it. Honestly, it's not particularly the greatest ending. It almost feels like Isayama wanted Eren to be the new Lelouch but lacked the setup and impact for it.

To me the early seasons of Shingeki no Kyojin will forever be my favorite, the raw impact, emotion of the first two seasons and probably the 3rd too are SnK at it's best. When the show felt like it was about trying to venture outside the walls, to the unknown to free humanity from their situation behind the wall. The literal sense of Man vs unsurmountable odds was more interesting, more emotional and far more impactful to me. I will forever remember the moments where the characters stare in the face of death, charge straight ahead yelling to sacrifice their hearts (Looking at you Erwin). It was special and like One Piece likes to say, it's a man romance.

I almost echo Eren's sentiment from the show here, to learn that humanity existed beyond the walls and was thriving in fact was almost disappointing in a way. Not to say that the story is bad, it's good but it evolves considerably and takes on a completely different tone from what it once was, which was simply not to my tastes or rather, I just preferred the earlier themes better.

I have mentioned this before, but Eren as the person who desired freedom more than anyone ends up being the person who is forever bound by the Path and the determinism of the show. It's poetic and his circumstance do evoke a certain poignance. I would even agree that is great storytelling but I can't shake that it makes the story more depressing and in my heart it's not the way I would have wanted SnK to conclude.

I don't think I fully understand why Mikasa's action cause the power of Titans to be erased but I'll look it up somewhere I guess.

On some level though, I do wonder what Isayama tries to tell through this story. That the cycle of violence cannot be broken? That you can never truly be free? It's a rather nihilistic conclusion to the show.

Despite everything I've said, I really did truly enjoy this series and thank you Isayama for the wonderful experience. I'll remember it for the rest of my life.

8/10, would sacrifice my heart again.

???

If the ending was so good to begin with why did the anime needed to change so much? Because the canon ending is terrible. Plotholes, character assasination, bad dialogues and previous events make no sense anymore.

And most important: The oscar for best acting goes to Eren. He even faked his inner monologues. What a men he is.

@WiblurFootIA It didnt make any sense. It was not the worst ending but it was the most STUPID ending. Most anime only watchers here didnt understand the stupid story Isyayama pulled from Part 1. In manga people can comprehend what is happening but in anime its little faster so some here are unable to understand what STUPIDITY Isayama did starting from Part 1. Hint: Forced Avengers.

And they even altered the extra pages where Paradis got carpet bombed. Instead of 70~100 years later it was changed to some very futuristic and propably hundreds of years in the future scene.

It has come to an end. Everything that was built up since 2009 has finally ended after 14 long years.

I don't know how or where to start my feelings on this. I've enjoyed every single moment of Attack on Titan. All the mysteries that were steadily unraveled along with us readers are mindblowing. The most significant part of Attack on Titan for me was when Reiner said he was from a far-off land. At first, I thought that would be some magical place, but when I came to know it was Marley, I was simply dumbfounded. So much of history was involved that it left me speechless.

The second part that pushed me into further exploring the world-building was Ille's Notebook. That episode left a big impression on me. When the Titan spoke, I realized there was just so much more to find out, and I couldn't stop myself from reading the manga. I still remember the time when I tried my best to skim through the volumes, but I just couldn't. The chapters were too long and it felt as if something was stopping me from being hasty. I now realize that it was the story itself. No matter how much I just wanted to flip the pages, the story screamed at me to take it slow. As such, I read everything with a calm mind while enjoying every part of it.

After that, I waited for a new chapter each month; always desperate to come home early just to read the chapter. It was all so much fun. And now, I'm here at the final episode of Attack on Titan. It feels as if a huge burden has been released from within, and now I can finally let go of it. All the enjoyment, fun, and wonderful memories are filling me deep inside I can't help but express it while writing this.

This episode was awesome. I watched the previous episode just yesterday to get the feeling of excitement back, and it didn't let me down. I woke up today at 7 a.m. just to watch this. I'd like to thank the studio and the crew that poured their all into making this. This was phenomenal.

They adapted everything from the manga so well that I was fully immersed in it. The fight with the Titans, the Titans helping them, Armin's transformation, Mikasa's decision, and finally, Eren's death completed it all. I somehow wish the story would continue after the war, but I believe it doesn't matter anymore. The outside world finally destroyed Paradi Island, and nothing could stop that. The only thing that significantly matters, is what would happen to the Boy and his Dog. Are they going to restart a new world full of Titans once again? Honestly, when I first read this in the manga, I was very much confused. What was Isayama actually hinting about? Does he want to leave a checkpoint so that one day he may decide to restart the manga? Or is it just an ending full of suspense to let us know that the tragedy will never stop and the cycle of hatred will keep on moving?

Isayama is a genius. I can tell that. And with this, I bid Attack on Titan farewell. Thank you for giving me so much fun and enjoyment. Thank you for giving me the urge to run back home to check if there's a new chapter. Thank you for being with us without failing us. Thank you, Eren.

welp, just as mid of an ending as i remembered from the manga. I only say mid and not bad because this had added manga pages that were not initially in the final chapter. Overall, its clear that, objectively, the writing jumps around too much and is too sloppy and few character focused to be considered "good". Every character agress on stuff becuse the plot has to end. ALSO, making your charcter who chose who to live between armin and Erwin say they made the right choice does not make it the right choice. Armin himself disagrees. He was useless until the end, anyone with his titan powers could of finished the explosion of as well (Armins only feat which isnt even his brain power). A 10/10 series that has its final stretch of 40 chapters and 2 ish "final seasons" perform at 5-6/10 quality at its best moments and lower at its worst

My biggest problem is what they changed with ymir and how they didn't show her complete backstory. I hate how they changed the narrative so that ymir was able to cause this chain of events because she was in love with king fritz, it is a total retcon and worse change. It also contradicts eren being convince ymir of helping him start the rumbling. The whole reasoning for why eren was able to convince ymir was because he understand that ymir was unable to break free from the bounds of slavery and couldn't be free, even after death, and eren who was a slave to freedom understood her. For those who are anime only read the the manga for ymir's backstory cus its 90% different than what the anime gives. I think they made that change so it would help make it so that ymir and fritz's relationship was a complement of eren and mikasa. Besides that overall I still the final was pretty good. As someone who read the manga, I can't be too upset what the anime did cus of what the manga did. There was some other stuff i didn't like, like cutting out alot of zeke's and armin's conversation along with their converstations with the previous titan weilders, etc. But I still don't like the retcon of ymir's motivation. I'd give this between a 8-8.5.
