Of course this is primarily aimed at those who had formed, let's say, a vague impression of Japan and its people before getting into anime. IE, not someone who grew up watching anime from an early age.

In my own case, i had a very meager knowledge of Japan and of that it was largely shogun era Japan. In other words i knew next to nothing about modern Japanese society. So anyway what was my vague impression? Mostly of a people who were almost always serious and who could kick butt of Westerners twice their size using martial arts. And now after anime i see that Japanese are not only not always serious but are actually very funny. Also i was surprised at how much Western influence there is in Japanese culture. Everything from English words sprinkled into many song lyrics (and on t-shirts) to characters wearing crosses, though the latter seems to have mostly been a late 90s/early 2000s type fad.

I thought Japan was full of sub fives explaining the lack of population growth. In retrospect now I see that a very small niche are chads by being pretty boys/celebrities. Huge boom of ntr there has me solidifying my opinion of that more. Also, the neet culture there is something else. Their stories often cater to sub fives which I think is a huge reason for anime's increased popularity. I hope they never change that aspect.

Not that much as I had some stuff in school of different level, the only things which I've got knowledge about Japan/or something else from anime are: Festivals, Tokyo having Prefectures [I had no idea] and the rules of Volleyball which made me like and watch the IRL matches of Volleyball and cheering for my Nation in international tournaments.

anime makes japan look very good but in reality that's not how it is. but one thing is- their manners and politeness, these things are true and are deeply ingraved in their culture. when i was a new fan i thought of japan as an utopia- the perfect country and like many others i too wanted to go and live there lmao but after finding out more about japan i think it is best to visit it as a tourist. there are a lot of attaractions there which will appeal to any kind of anime fan plus these days the yen value has dropped as well so no better time to visit it and try the combini's, bullet train and delicacies that we see in animes. if i had to say something bad then i would say that degeneracy is kind of encouraged there or one can say not discouraged there, like if i'm remembering correctly the age of consent is 16 there which is a little low, should be at least 17 or 18. then there's stuff like not discouraging not going out, being alone and quite etc., they create special places for people who can order without speaking or anything and live without contact. stuff like that is leading to young people not being able to form friendships and unable to find partners. they even enable people to completely replace everything that one can get in a relationship. they have host and hostess bars for having conversations then variety of brothels and lots of variety of sex toys etc. no wonder their birth rate is declining. but even after keeping this in mind, japan seems like a very great place to visit as a tourist or maybe live there in the country-side after retirement, one just needs to find a place where xenophobia and racism is not present.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

That reminds me of when i studied Latin. I could do well enough with the examples given in the textbooks, but when i tried to go out in the "wild" and read actual Latin authors i was completely at a loss. And so it is with how tv shows/anime depict society: most of the time you're just seeing a tamed version of what you would actually experience in the wild, so to speak. But it can be very easy to forget that.

As to the age of consent, i think i've seen that 16 is the age in at least some US states and probably some European nations as well. But in essence i agree with what you're saying, especially "if i had to say something bad then i would say that degeneracy is kind of encouraged there or one can say not discouraged there". That's how it strikes me as well. Not that those of us here from the US, at least, have any moral high ground to stand on though. For i heard a news report a while back that America leads the world in child porn downloads. But it is ironic that the more sexualized societies become the more the birth-rates seem to decline.

In Japan, liking cute things is more accepted, hence, there's so much cuteness in Japan.

Kawaii was pushed onto the Japanese people in order to pacify them so they can be controlled easier. According to Confucianism, the ideal way for the rulers to rule is for the ruler to become like a parent that parents their children. Historically, the country was also once seen as an imperialist power, so that's all.

I never had any strong feelings one way or the other towards Japan or Japanese people aside from liking their media. I've grown more interested in Japanese forklore and mythology, but thats about it. I don't all of the sudden think Japan is some kind of amazing place just because of how its portrayed in the things consumed. I wouldn't mind going there once to say I did, but it's not like I expect it to be anywhere near what it's like in anime, and it's not like I have a burning desire to go. Especially since I hate being around a shit ton of people, and being in a completely different country on top of that wont help.

It had motivated me to take japanese language class with a japanese teacher so to meet real japanese people in live, talking to them and therefore see how their act for real which is mostly like most people on Earth with a few cultural differences between them and the western world. So i guess it got me in the end way more realistic a view of japanese people than many people around me who talk about them sharing a lot of dehumanizing stereotypes, japanese people are humans like us not robots...the way most talk about them in the western world is both racist and creepy tbh.

There was a Japanese kid in the high school I wen to. I was (still am) mad about anime and the fact that there was a real Japanese person made me very excited so I called out to him. Though he's back in Japan we're still friends.

Back then I didn't believe that Japanese people say "eh" and "etto..." or even go "eeeehhhH!!!!" when they're surprised. Turns out they do.

I love the country and it's culture and history, and learning Japanese has been fun and rewarding. However, especially recently, I can't help but think the entire country is just cuck central. That's not to say that other country's don't have the same problem, hell a lot of US media and many of the popular romances involve cheating to some degree.

I didn't know much about Japan and japanese people before I started reading manga and watching animes.
Now I feel like I picked up on some basic things: what they generally like to eat for breakfast, the festivals, some pop culture references, the idols, the different dialects...

I'm well aware this is still a very superficial knowledge, and I'm sure that if one day I ever get the chance to see Japan in person, I will learn a lot more :)

"How has anime changed your view of Japan/Japanese people?"

Kind of started seeing them as normal (and overworked) people, not samurais, ninjas and karate masters.

That's pretty cool. A few years ago i remember wondering* if there were any manga/anime about Japanese exchange students (or the like) living abroad, especially in America where i happen to live, but never really looked into it. Might be interesting though seeing American society depicted through the eyes of such a person.

*at that time my neighborhood had some exchange students from France which is what sparked this thought.

Anime learn me 2-3 things about Japan : ( the truth ) :

1. History ( edo period etc... )
2. Oji-san being kindful and curious and "open-minded" ( that is true, when I visited Japan, lot of grandpas and grandmas were saying hello to me with a smile and often opened a discussion with me )
3. Festival High school / Clubs

The wrong :
-- Other things ( stereotypes ) that i saw in animes were wrong .
- 99% romance anime are fake.
- All girls being kawaii, shy, patient and friendly ( that's kinda untrue, girls are girls. they are some evil and some kind. like other countries ) .
- Also, Anime will only show you the "great" . Bad situation, bad scenario will tend to be express like something little. In Anime there's always hope. So, even the worst situation tend to transform in a good situation somehow.

It's not representative of the IRL Japan or IRL world.

But, there's some anime that approach the truth. ( NHK, Aggressive Retsuko, GTO... )

Morpheus: The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work... when you go to church... when you pay your taxes.
It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

Neo: What truth?

Most anime represents the good side of Japan, so I don't think generic anime can change people's views of Japan. Anime doesn't change my view that much, it is watching documentaries that make me see the bigger picture of Japan.

I have been pretty fascinated with Japan for quite some time ever since being a fan of Kaiju movies and other Japanese media.

As most have already said, Anime tends to put a good face on things. The idol culture especially looks magical & wonderful in Anime, when in reality it's pretty disturbing & harsh, as is the general fascination with youth - which, whilst somewhat common in Asia it seems, definitely seems more visible/accepted in Japan.

I also don't think Anime really shows the harsh working lives of it's people, usually the extent of it is the kids living at home alone whilst the parents are working away for months seemingly. It does however make vacations/time off very special, but even this is also not quite accurate, as many Japanese don't actually take much time off at all, such is the hardworking culture.

@NDskies I saw we have "same" taste concerning favourites.

I sugest you to watch (Netflix) the TV reality Show : Terrace House. ( 3 girls - 3 guys in the same house ) . And there's humourist who comments on their behaviour on whats going on. I think you may like it. And gives you another picture of Japan. ( you'll see for exemple a guy who's a father but his ex wife left with the kid and he never saw the kid again. and in Japan it seems like it's a "common" thing. like it's not shocking if the mother leave with the kid and the father not being able to see the kid) .

But overall, the main focus of 80% participating in the show is to find love.
