Which anime series feel timeless to YOU (in that they could've been released back then and stood the test of time/be released now and not feel out of place)?

Sometimes it does amaze me that Jojo has been around as long as it has, because aside from the artwork which I could easily overlook as a stylistic choice, the story doesn't feel dated at all (part 4 and 5 in particular feel fresh to me). Also, I could see "Slam Dunk" and the "Ghost in the Shell" movie coming out now and still popping off the same way they did in the 90s.

On the flipside, "Sonny Boy" could've aired in the late 90s/early 2000s and fit right in with what was going on in anime during the time - and then lasted as a cult classic.

For me Psycho Pass, Fate, Madoka, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Gundam UC, Monster and Hunter x Hunter feel the most timeless to me. Like I can watch those series multiple times and they still hold up.
Sometimes it takes a real man to be best girl. Gilgamesh is also chad.

There are many of them, but my first thoughts were Saint Seiya and JJBA.

I saw Azumanga Daioh and Strawberry Marshmallow in 2016, 15 and 11 years after they were released, respectively. I guess it was because i hadn't been into anime for awhile at that point and had no idea what exactly a modern anime looked like, but they really did feel like they were modern series. I never would've guessed they were over a decade old at that point.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

The only thing which comes to my mind are:
Bleach [if the season 1 would be treated like TYBW in nowadays, as with fillers and some changing I don't think it would hit right now]
Ghost in the Shell
No game No life
Steins Gate
Jin-roh

And that's all I can think of.

Oreimo would have been quite a hit, and very relatable back in medieval times, just as much as it is a modern masterpiece, what with all the wincest and all

Hm... The one that comes first at my mind are Madoka, Steins:gate, Death note and maybe I could add No game no life, even though I think it's still a bit of the "new" series, yet I may be wrong...as well there are also some others, although some of them might not be as that much relevant if they were released in the present day or some quite near past...

"Which anime series feel timeless to YOU?"

Nothing is timeless...because nothing is created in a vacuum. Like those shows are product of their time - a sample of the aesthetics, the ideas, the themes and the viewpoints which were floating around at the time of their production. This is why understanding the context (at least to some degree) is so important when you deal with retro stuff - out of it said show could be a total nonsense.

What you can have tho are shows which age well. This comes from the fact that their creators putted interesting ideas and a lot of skill. Their opposite are the low effort titles which only tried to ride certain trend. Those age really really fast despite their former popularity.

"Jojo has been around as long"

Three thing worked for it:
1. The manga being a popular brand.
2. It being kind of a parody of battle shounen which gives it a false fresh feel.
3. David Productions being very good at giving a "fresh coat, which makes older stuff look new.
They did the same thing with Urusei Yatsura, but I guess romantic surrealist comedies are niche...and this niche was already taken by Kaguya-sama: Love Is War.

"Also, I could see "Slam Dunk" and the "Ghost in the Shell" movie coming out now and still popping off the same way they did in the 90s."

1. "Slam Dunk" - not with it's original character design.
2. "Ghost in the Shell" - nobody cares about hardcore sci-fi any more...even the authors of such (just look what they did with SAC_2045).

The simplest answer is all the old anime in my favorites. I watched them decades after their original release yet did not find them out of place.

Reminder that Astro Boy got a widescreen series in 2003, back before most viewers had widescreen TVs. Whoever dubbed it actively chose to date the series by cropping the image for old TVs.

Hyouka could have aired 20 years ago and would still be great.

Also, as previously mentioned, Psycho Pass would be just as well received if it was in the 90s

Fullmetal Alchemist would be a good example I think. The storytelling of the manga still holds up to 2023 standards and the art is fantastic, and the series is in its own fantasy world with a sorta early 20th century feel so the world won't feel outdated in a sense if it came out at a later date since it is its own world and takes a bit of inspiration in some of the tech and architecture from history.

All shows one way or another reflect their time initially released, and are not timeless in that regard. Like many seem to mention Jojo but imo reasons why it feels "timeless" is due to the story still continuing and having multiple parts, marketing behind it and especially towards some countries where it is a new show. But you look at each parts as their own stories you can pinpoint movies, trends, music, even news and influences they've had in the story, art style, characters and fashion. At least one thing I like to do is trying to find horror movies and books from specific eras and their influence in JJBA...

Gokudou-kun: Manyuuki Will always be fun and a show I can honestly recommend.

Slayers. I personally love the characters, and the mix of old-school slapstick anime goofiness, Action and with what season two, and three brings to the table. also some really scary situations. Phibrizo is still in my opinion one of the scariest villain concepts i have come across. And Valgaav. Is basically Sasuke but with dragon powers, but as the Main antagonist without a buddy like Naruto to keep him from jumping off the deep end.

Also
Ouran High School Host Club I never thought i would love or even like this show as much as I did. Go watch it Fujioka, Haruhi third best anime girl :D

I'm sure K-On would do just fine should they be released recently.
