| Are there any specific (anime) memes that you find overused, misused, or just plain annoying for some reason? Do you react to it in any way or do you just roll your eyes and move on every time you see them? For example, I personally have never been able to understand people who compare content with food and constantly write things like “we will eat deliciously” during announcements, since for me this immediately evokes some kind of disrespectful associations with “fodder”. Or all these so-called "Tumblr gay memes" like "roommates" or "historians will say they were friends" that are literally used every time there is any gay content somewhere, even if it is as open as possible and no one is questions this, not to mention the fact that the very essence of the last meme makes me extremely salty as a history enthusiast, since for the last 50 years historians have only been busy declaring any pair of more or less close people gay. |

| @eblf2013 Keep in mind that the "b" sound can often be easily heard as a "p" sound. So, thanks to this, the name of the Pokemon Beedrill sounds critically similar to one of the mocking forms of Russian homophobic slurs. Thus, the scene where the bees fly at the characters and Ash's new acquaintance says "oh my god, it's a swarm of beedrill" starts to sound like "oh my god, it's a swarm of f-words." And so on. It even became one of the very first Pokemon memes in Eastern Europe, since at that time content for Ukraine and Belarus was mainly translated into Russian. Slavic languages are very fond of puns, especially with foreign words, so such things are quite common. For example, in the past, the Doshirak brand had to quickly abandon the Russification of the brand as “Dosirak”, because in Russian or Ukrainian it sounded like a joke about diarrhea. Considering we're talking about disreputable instant noodles, this made the meme doubly subtle. |
