Why are most shows stupidly bright these days?

It might be partly because I have gotten older, but every new show looks so bright these days. By bright I mean the color pallet and saturation, I remember the colors in most series being much darker in the past. One of my favorite examples of this is the old cardcaptor sakura compared to clear card, the bightness actually hurts my eyes and detracts from my enjoyment of the series.

Is this a concern for you? Have you experienced the lighting, color pallet, and saturation of newer anime becoming brighter?

digitization from what I can tell, it's a good method for trying to hide parts of the art that aren't quite right or make the characters pop better

It is because when your waifu undresses, you would have trouble seeing her naked thus avoiding being hit.

I don't mind it, though.

It doesn't bother me much, But I would say that I miss the more depressing and dark palet of stuff like Death note, Phycho pass, and Parasyte, It just adds so much to the atmosphere and feel of the show when you're telling a sad serious story.
I don't speak English that much, so please cut me some slack

Just you. I feel the opposite, recent anime borders on "real is brown" to me.

Maybe it's due to modern technology? Even photos now are brighter than it was in the past. I don't mind the bright colors, though I think some anime would benefit for having darker color tone, for example the Chimera Arc in Hunter x Hunter 2011 would probably feel even more intense if they were to use the color tone used in Hunter x Hunter 1999.

Well I think so too. Death note is a clear example of what a somewhat dark art style was used to be.

Reasons according to me:
1. LN adaptations are more.
2. Technology of making anime has changed.
3. The ratio of Seinen and mecha in total anime scene is reduced.

Anime was it's best 20000 years ago, when cavemen drew art with real depth.
Modern anime is all garbage. I miss great old days of anime.

Digital animation.

Cel animation was analog. You were seeing the physical cels over physical backgrounds, and colors weren't picked up with 100% accuracy, so there's often a "dimness" to it.

With digital everything's just done on the computer and fed straight into your eyeballs. The color palettes don't HAVE to be overly bright, but you usually don't get studios/artists who care enough to make good looking digital stuff.

Because it suits the overall theme? I believe a lot of show now seem more colorful and bright because of the current show line dominated with more light and fun genres, like comedy, action, or romance. These bright color and pallet complemented well with the overall tone of the story

Some current shows still maintain their dark and muddy color tones like Made in Abyss, Goblin Slayer, Vinland Saga, or Promised Neverland because their main theme is more gritty and dark.

I guess it's more of a stylistic choice but also in the past the analogue TV formats PAL, NTSC and to certain degree SECAM had problems depicting some of the bright colours, so there were some safe palettes for each system. (And converting between those formats sucked.)
The artists could paint their frames with colours outside of them but it wouldn't looked very good on screen. Thus on old shows we have mainly darker palettes or pastels.

Movies were OK tho. This is why newer video releases of old anime movies look so good.

It has to do with the different kinds of color contrasts between digital and cel, but in your specific example it's also the type of anime. Cardcaptor Sakura is supposed to be a very bright and colorful series, the original was already, and it's only natural that they follow that path to the max in the sequel (and particularly color white seems very relevant in the sequel so it looks even brighter). Many other modern shows don't look nearly as bright.

I've noticed the same. Most modern anime have very vibrant color palettes that ironically give everything a certain sameness. That is a big reason why I generally prefer 90s shows. They usually had a more washed out look to their art, so the colors that were meant to pop really did pop.

They want you to think it's bright so you don't realize how dim some of these fucking characters are.

I know that joke doesn't work in Japanese, but I'm saying it anyway

I think old anime suffers from the exact contrary. In the end too high contrast and too low contrast end up washing out the colors that are meant to pop. It's not like it's super bright when it needs to be, it's actually dull all the time. But back then this was the product of a limitation, what happens now seems like a bad or an insufficient use of the tools available today.

Also I think the example of the OP is not good... It's like complaining that modern anime looks too dull after watching Psycho-Pass or that it looks too colorful after watching a Precure entry. In this case, the first thing that stands out when you look at the character designs and the style of Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen is that it uses a very light color palette, and the main character in particular wears white or very light colored clothes. That alone makes the show look brighter and it's not any sort of limitation, it's a very clear stylistic choice that also works and is used for this show in specific. Other shows look bright because they are filled with vibrant colours, others look dull because they use poor illumination/contrast on purpose, others make the character designs stand out, in some other cases the focus is in the background or the special effects. We can treat this issue in general but first we have to take a case by case into account and see whether this brightness or lack of fits the aesthetic and narrative intent of the series.

The image of anime today is something bright, when someone asks you about anime the first thing that comes to people's mind is a bright, huge eyes, generic character, that's just how it is, but yeah, i did lost a lot of the dark theme that a few ones like Death Note or Monster had, i can't picture an anime with a more serious and realistic atmosphere on it these days.

Everything is stupidly bright on a screen, it's not just anime. Just put on Night mode and dark theme and reduce the lightning. It's much more comfy for the eyes and the screen would no longer give you headache after a while.

I don't think being bright should be called stupid. I mean its actually a good thing for many shows. But what I don't like is how they do it.

The trashier one. These kind of style needs to be stopped. idk why but looking at them makes me think of plastic for some reason.

The good one.

Just some random pics of two anime from this season.

I absolutely get you. I don't like it either, when it's too much and overdone. I don't like how some anime do have such a high saturation nowadays. I still like colorful anime ofc, I don't like it too bleak, but the "generic" color palette of anime is eeh.. a bit more of muted saturation could do well for some anime.

I really disliked the new color palette for D.Gray-man Hallow. The colors for the old one were pretty good looking and gave the series that bit of a gothic atmosphere. But in Hallow they used that pretty generic color palette.

Yeah because there are too many light points in their faces. I don't like it too much either. It's something you really must get used to.

I think it depends on the mood of the anime. Most happy-go-lucky slice of anime tend to have that trait.

Old thread but yeah too many shows are oversaturated. It works well on some shows but others it really has no place there.

I have noticed a contrast between 80/90s art styles and modern art styles. I imagine it's a result of technological advancement and increased budgeting, as well as studios wanting to make anime "eye candy" in order to appeal to the masses.

@karrotStick I just used your second image in another thread to make a point about some of the things I really dislike about modern anime art.

That horrible light on the left is something I really wish anime studios would drop. It feels like it is in every single show. It's ruined so many scenes in hundreds of shows at this point.
