Hi there great people of MAL!

so as the title suggests, I change MAL scores every few anime in a while(am I making any sense?)
and as you probably surmised, this topic signs my letter of confession that either I must be 1- not right in the head(crazy/insane or other relevant mental conditions )

2 - have too much free time that I should be spending on other stuff
3 - mixture of both
4 - other reasons?

maybe I kinda want to confirm that if there are other people like myself or I'm just plain bored! tell me what you think

but regardless of whatever you think , don't worry! answer this topic to your heart's content! but please remember to keep it civil and have fun in the process! thank you in advance

Nah, me just like u. Sometimes you have recency bias or nostalgia, so changing rating is normal.

you're completely sane and it is pretty normal to do this.

the more animes you watch or rather the more good animes you watch which you really enjoyed the more your standards increase. you won't rate the stuff you used to rate 10 in the past a 10 now for example after watching a new anime which really felt like a 10 to you. am i making sense?

i also do the same and i updated all my 8s, 9s and 10s just 2 weeks back. everyone updates scores till the point when they don't find any new anime they watch to be groundbreaking.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

I have 1000+ completed. I still do this on regular basis. The more anime you watch, the more things you have to compare with each other and think about how X is better or worse than Y. Each new anime gets compared with amount of random titles from my completed and everything gets changed in order to search for that elusive objectivity.

As you consume more stuff, your taste and critical judgement of entertainment tend to change. Comparison makes you think that perhaps something you rated highly or rashly may deserve another score. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I agree with your point. Indeed I must be experiencing recency bias.
maybe I'm becoming a bit more experienced and my idea of a good anime has changed

You're definitely not alone. I'm always changing my ratings because some of them make me wonder what the fuck I was thinking when I scored them.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

this. that makes sense to me a lot.. also I wish MAL had decimal point rating (like 8.4 etc) like a certain rival site, So I could define an actually very good 8ish anime or a barely 8 anime... would have been great..  although one could export his/her favorites and import it there but of course , it's beside the point of this topic . sorry :)

it's okay i understand where you're coming from about the decimal system. many people could make use of that but i personally like the current rating system more, it's easy for me to rate. rating in decimals would just be a headache for me, i won't know how to decide lol.

indeed it would be a headache . being easier to rate is a plus. its just it would have been a nicety to have, so I(and probably others) could do the same for at least some animes if not all of them!

Doesn’t everyone do this haha?

Tbh I’ve stopped caring about my scores. Sure, I may change one of my scores once in a while, but there are so many inconsistencies in how I rate things. I think pondering over it too much will give me a lot of grief, which I don’t want.

yeah many people could make use of it. there have been discussions in the past about rating system as well. there are many people who want the implementation of decimal system and there are even people who are outright saying they want a rating system with scores from 1 to 5 just like in episode discussions. at the end the current system seems the most easy and functional but decimal system would be nice for some people too.

probably. the grief part is also pretty real , maybe not exactly grief but more like a bit of sadness?
the thing is I have some friends that seem to not care about scoring so I thought "hey, its not like everyone is going to criticize your or anything, why am I doing this?". later I found out. those guys haven't watched too many animes. around 10 or 15 at best(not that having watched many actually makes you an expert or a "certified" professional LOL)

and always there is that one friend who will bash his/her favorites in your face

the variety is nice to have

I guess current system seems the most optimal one for many people.. probably MAL started like this and still uses the current system like a lot of other websites.. and I feel like implementing such system is a pretty major change on the side of programming so yeah, all is well I guess

I did the same. It can mean that your true taste takes form or you just like to think about anime on a deeper level than most.

...

or you really are crazy idk.

I mean that's normal as you watch more shows, your expectations and standards change along the way. There's no pressure or anything wrong with you.

No, you got so much free time. LOOK at the long run.

Let's say you have a list size of 1000+ entries. Are you really gonna waste time re-rating your whole list for every new anime you watch.

Just rate based on enjoyment you had when you completed. Several years from now, you might looks back and look at them. You might laugh and thought why did I rate these too high or low compare to modern anime. But that was the you at the time. You will learn about what your past taste was like.

Keep it and move on.

It's normal in your case. I'd say the 200 completed range is still in the ballpark for frequently shifting standards, thoughts, and overall development. I was certainly in your shoes once.

My own sense of judgement, bar of standards, and scale for comparison are developed enough that they're set in stone at this point. Generally, the more experience you gain, the more your own true shape takes form. How your brain is wired is also a significant factor. Some people naturally think more critically about media and ratings than others. There's nothing wrong if someone views anime, cinema, or music as purely entertainment to pass the time. I am most definitely not in that camp, so I can understand your particular situation.

I'm not like you, but I think I might get where you're coming from.
See perhaps you like anime, but don't take it seriously enough where giving it a score, will impact your enjoyment.

Personally when I rate, I have my criteria, and personal enjoyment, plus mood to consider, when rating. I take anime overly serious about anime and am very subjective. So it isn't even the anime's fault, when I rate it low, it's mainly because some small thing in it rubbed me the wrong way and I gave it a poor score out of frustration.

Casually rating anime, doesn't mean you enjoy it less. It means you're open minded and the anime had maybe a grander impact on you.

I've only changed my rating of Hetalia lol.

The majority of the anime on my list were watched when I was between the ages of 12 and 15. I don't consider most of them to be accurate ratings now. My tastes have changed since then, but there are so many on that list I refuse to re-watch to give a more realistic rating. I guess my stats may be a little off for a while haha.

Yes, I did that sometimes, but then I let it slide into the anarchy it is now.
Not totally, because I'm at it to delete lot of unimportant entries out of it, but in general... I also give high scores now because I both really enjoy what I watch and think they kinda deserved it too.

Does MAL Ratings live rent free in your head?

Instead of dwelling on the scores you can clear your mind and watch more anime..
