I found all previous episode to be cringe and with weak writing, but this one was  actually really good. 5/5
MC got far outshined here by some sidecharacters and the relationship between these 3 is miles better than  anything previously presented.
MC's relationship to his wife does not feel real(and she has the tiniest scar on her beautiful face so we gotta pretend she is ugly now and his love for her is so deep because of it huh, the relationship also had 0 buildup village chef litteraly threw it at him like HI MC take my daughter bye!) relationship to this empowered female samurai does feel fake and out of nowhere too.(just plot demands them to cooperate and stay alive for magical reasons) their backstories  were also complete nonsense. Including how when the lady is tiny bit sad or something the sword completely stops being able to cut things, she could not cut apple after years of training. It maybe sounded deep  to the writer, but it really does not translate well to the viewer, especially because no other character in this anime has this issue. Even swords of characters in this episode were all working just fine if they managed to land hit at all, without some naruto feelingchakra play needed. If you want to make stupid "feelings can cut or not cut" rule, apply it to all characters in the universe or at least all executioners.

But relationships in this specific episode all make sense and look way more natural, we also know these people trained and we can see what did they learn and how and why including motivations for all they  do and even how they met in this timeline is  explained (search for current leading from island).
Master does upsie by being self-centered>Gets bigly impacted and tries to focus on others more>Redeems his regrets as intended
Boy is free spirit>gets father figure>wants to quit because free spirit>gets talking to about his teacher's regrets by third party>is like yeah that makes sense lets give it one more go>gets taught to be great swordsman but because he is also free spirit questions sentence of one prisoner that is obviously innocent
Girl makes childish upsie which destroys her clan and village but was not true crime or evil>has big regrets but swordsman gives her the nice guy talk and tries to save her from death sentence>likes the guy for obvious reasons

I just wish the main story was this good, I could rate this episode 9/10 perhaps 10/10 but rest of the show is somewhere between 6 and 7
And yeah i bet everything is explained in the Manga or Light Novel perfectly and his relationship to his wife has 150pages there and the sword lady stuff is ultra deep, and his wifes has no face at all but looks like undead burn victim so it is brave to love her anyway.... but it is not in the anime and i rate anime here. And in the anime it could hardly be more half-assed and random looking.

Why i dislike some girl's depression/ideology being what defines her swordsmanship but do not rage at blind guy being good with sword? For one, it is explained in the episode (my teacher is blind but he can go by sound and smell) he has lots of training AND we are never shown some other blind guy in this anime that can not do these things, he is also fast but not literal god, he loses vs kid(probably on purpose) and does not cut the monster at all if  we do not count that single weapon throw at re-growing monster. But we can see many executioners in this anime not having some depression impairment moments that turn their swords in to cotton candy. So the blind guy is justified story-wise to be like that on many levels. While with the girl we just get told "oh yes the ehm executed victim souls are sad when you do not cut them while smoking marihuana, and you can see ehm le truth in le sword ok which means just that after she cuts someone the spirit shows his tongue to her in the swords reflection"  She also has barely any personality beyond this feeling-no-jutsu. Oh she is executioner but girl! How exciting... also she keeps proving that females are inferior at that job and gets her co-workers killed. If you want to make it woke at least make her not suck for so many episodes.  There are also things that just made me laugh, like when the boy flexes his neck to not be beheaded, that is cringe no matter how much explaining we would get for it. I could stomach his skin just being god-tier armor at all times from drinking immortality juice, unless he loses will to live which magically softens his skin. But the literal neck flexing breaking katanas is bit too comical.

Also many things quite randomly can and can not cut characters in this anime. One time kunai can not penetrade MC's skin, second time it can third time it can not next episode it can again...  Is this too some sort of depression related power?  When magic and magic spells in harry potter are explained way better and consistently than just your main's character abilities, you should realize that  there is problem. First we get presented with MC that just can not get killed by any execution in the world which includes fire(which means he does not even need oxygen to live and has full-body immunity to damage without flexing neck), and 2 episode later same guy can get killed by punch or any weapon in the universe. Did the island apply kriptonite curse on  him?  Also MC gets poisoned by butterfly poison in air while HE DOES NOT need to breath at all was estabilished few episodes before or he would be dead as explained by the smoke poisoning episode during his execution!

I really hope that i have amnesia and this all was explained somewhere really well. Because this specific episode was amazing, and i want it to keep being amazing. If we get at least 3 more episodes this good i'll up the rating from 7/10 to 8

I don't know if it was better handled in manga, but it was one poorly directed episode even for a filler. It's straight up bad writing (and any literature major or a professional writer would agree) to give an entire backstory of a character, then kill them off in a single episode to show what exactly? The monsters are dangerous? Good characters don't have a plot armor? Suppose I had built up a little higher expectations for the direction of this show
Shift your focus from Tenza to other two characters: Nurugai and Shion. It's not a filler, it's a story of how these two met. Tenza died in the process.
Though I agree the direction seems a bit off.  Because of the way it was presented many other comments also regarded this episode as a filler.
Also there were some badly animated scenes too. (Like Nurugai crying)

Tenza was a real one but seriously, what's the point of building up a character for an entire episode if he's gonna get killed off immediately after? So far, lots of wasted potential in terms of promising characters.

Again with this anime. It's so unusal to have this backstory for a character we don't even know in the present time and then just have them die. They haven't even interacted with our main gang. I suppose there will be (or better be) some payoff with the sensei and the little girl growing as characters/joining our main gang at some point.

At the start of the episode, I was like here we go again. Hell’s Paradise is going to show us new characters just to kill them off again.

Even though they did exactly that, I really liked this episode. Tenza started as a good for nothing kid with not much to live for but Sensei gave him exactly that. I like the twist that his old junior strayed from the “way” and he was the one who had to kill him, which fueled his passion for teaching. Even though is a cliche approach, the bond between them was good to see.

How in the world are they supposed to beat, let alone survive on this island? That’s what this show has me curious to find out

This episode was simply kino. Brilliant adaptation of the source material, enriched with additional anime original scenes dedicated to Tenza's past. Tenza as a character deserved such episode. He was a good man. Shion has taught him well.

It seems that the fight choreographers and storyboarders are lacking imagination. The clear intent of that scene where Tenza first flurry-cuts the Immortal Sage's arms and head off was for all the swings to occur in the time the Sage shifted his gaze from Tenza's face to his blade's movement. In other words, Tenza swung so fast that he made three slashes while the Sage only barely could perceive what was going on with his eyes.

That certainly was the mangaka's intent, going from the flow of the scene we just watched. But the impact of that scene was so awfully dulled with the literal panel-for-panel recreation of the scene in the anime. It looks like Tenza just calmly steps forward and pauses in between swings with no sense of the urgency or speed that he just boasted about in his thoughts. The outcome makes it look like the Sage is beyond slow with his reflexes and Tenza looks nowhere near as fast as he must be in order to cut down one of these immortals. That scene above all the others in this episode drastically needs to be re-animated to be tighter and accurately convey what is going on.

It is on par with the way the anime adapted the Giant vs. Gabimaru & Sagiri fight, where it looked like they recreated the manga panel-for-panel, making the fight seem slow and full of expository chats while everyone, including the Giant, just stood in place without moving at all, when in reality this ninja and swordswoman were darting to and fro while dodging an angry Giant's swings.

I have a bad feeling that future fights in this series, except perhaps a couple big-budget ones that have story implications for the main characters, will play out in a similar manner. It's such a shame given that the source material deserves more respect in how it's adapted. I haven't even read the manga at all and I can perceive these problems. Good art, framing, and stills will not cover up the need for fluid action scenes that convey the physical reality of these superhuman fights.
Exactly. The directorial decisions made with adapting from the medium of manga to the different medium of animation is severely lacking in regards to understanding either of these mediums and changing certain aspects accordingly. Changes actually are necessary if you dont want your show to end up janky and jarring. What works for a manga isnt just automatically going to work for animation.... But apparently, no one told the director or the majority of behind the scenes staff that lol.

Tenza was given a second chance in life to have a better future... but in the end the man chose that "better future" by protecting the people who gave him that chance.

I can't help but feel sad when he imagines that the real better future should be when he becomes a Sensei too and then marries Nurugai.

I knew this was coming (since you can see his death in the op) but still got attached when the episode with him and Nurugai came out. I couldn't wait to see more of them, though I was hoping he'd last a bit longer. Seeing his background and relationship with Shion was nice, though I prefer it when writers sprinkle bits throughout rather than placing them directly in the episode they die. This tends to be the flaw of stories with many character deaths like battle royales, tournaments, horror, and such, especially when they mostly focus on the main cast. But it's one I don't mind too much. And I was still effectively attached to Tenza.

Rip. Hoping Shion and Nurugai can stay alive just a little longer after his sacrifice.

This is something I have to unfortunately agree with. The fight scenes seem off and slow. At first I could put into perspective what made it feel that way, but it is this.

Damn, for a minute I thought Shion would die and Tenza and Nurugai would escape to live another day.... I hope that Nurugai survives the island somehow.

This episode showed how brutal and immortal those beings are, and they learn quick as was shown. I'm thinking maybe fire could permanently destroy them but I doubt it would be that easy. Curious how the remaining humans on the island survive although I think there will be more deaths.

Really don’t know the point of this episode.
His character hasn’t been relevant to the plot at all. Then we get the backstory and then he dies???
Also what brought about the marriage vision even?? He literally got to know a while back that the kid was a girl and that was apparently good enough for him to fall in love.

Jesus… I was dreading this episode. I really love Tenza and he deserved better 😭

Poor Nurugai too; she had to watch someone she cares about die again after watching all of her people slaughtered in the past.

I feel like there’s another message here though; Tenza couldn’t land a hit on the Tensen when he was sticking to the samurai code but could when he fought his own way. Maybe a message about the way of the samurai not always being the right way?
