Curious to see what everyone says...

For me, it's hard not to mention anime such as Ping Pong The Animation and AKIRA, such unique animation styles with so much attention to detail, fluid, and dynamic motions, and creative visual effects, all while having an amazing cinematic direction.

I also see Demon Slayer as one of the anime pushing more and more the expressive character designs and stellar action sequences.
As well as just the overall quality of animation present in Demon Slayer.

Of course we have Comixwave, dont forget them.
Sanzigen and Studio Orange with their mocap 3D CGI.

I wonder if UFOTable does this to some degree.

Mihoyo with their anime sequences for their Geshin and Honkai games also look brilliant.

Wont mention KyoAni because everyone KyoAni reasons..

Land of the Lustrous (2017) was the first anime which got universal acclaim because it used CGI in new ways. It was Studio Orange's breaktrough, and paved the way for more CGI masterpieces such as Beastars (2019).

Satoshi Kon's movies created camera techniques unseen before, and which made their entry into live action movies. It's very rare that anime has an impact outside its bubble, but he even inspired Hollywood. Perfect Blue (1998) is most influential here, runner up Sennen Joyuu (2002) and Paprika (2006). Tokyo Godfathers (2003) excels in story writing, but visually is rather standard fare - by his high standards.

Finally, Studio Shaft created a unique visual language easily identified even by small snippets. Shows such as Bakemonogatari (2010) and Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (2011) are near the peak of their innovative period.

There are of course many more examples, but those three should make almost any top 10 list.

Phoenix 2772 did it before Akira.
2003 Astro Boy (Japnese audio) was probably the greatest looking TV anime at the time it aired.
I have not seen anything like Gankutsuou before or since.

Animators who work in the anime industry view Memories and Jin-Rou as the Bible of animation, the veterans of the industry call them “animation pushed to it’s extremes”.

Other notable ones are Akira and Steam Boy as they really did receive so much resources.

And I would also mention Redline, simply for looking unreal and having such a mind blowing backstory. And as strange as it may seem, Fate/Grand Order Babylonia is an anime that made a Sakuga for every single episode of it’s 20-ish episode runtime which is a HUGE deal for tv-broadcasted anime that length.

Since when Redline has a mind-blowing backstory? It's pretty simplistic.

As for Demon Slayer, I don't think it pushes boundaries of animation but only looks flashy with lots of colors. Seirei no Moribito and GITS SAC has better animated actions scenes imo.

I dunno if it pushed the boundaries or not, but after just watching K Project 2nd season, it was really refreshing watching such dynamic directing and visuals.

Best animation I've seen is the dragon ball super broly movie, absolutely stunning. The ToP arc in super had amazing animation as well, specifically goku vs jiren. Other than that the obvious fate series.

Patlabor movie 2 hands down to one of the most pleasing and authentic animation that holds down to this day even though it released before 30 years the amount of details from every frame deserves to be references to every animator .

Violet Evergarden is the first, that popped in to my head. The second anime might be Chainsaw Man, not my personal preference, but I can't deny it looked and more importantly, felt revolutionary. That's all I got.

It does better than other TV shows from the same year, like Uchuu Kaizoku Captain Herlock for example.
Also not sure what release you have watched.

I still believe Macross: Do You Remember Love? is still the most beautiful anime I have seen in terms of animation. There are tons of shows and movies that are gorgeous and beautiful, but I'll never forget how awestruck I was when watching DYRL.

Trashy encoding is my guess...
Like it's not the greatest TV animation or anything, but it's a benchmark for that period (some great art and backgrounds too, like took about 100 screenshots with crows, skulls and creepy places)...and we are talking about my narrow perspective here.
If there's a TV show from the same year with incomparably better animation...well I haven't seen it (yet).

For example I know for a fact that Tom Sawyer no Bouke (1980) and Space Cobra (1982) have way better animation (for TV projects) in comparison, but they came later.
By the way I didn't included Tom Sawyer no Bouke in my list, because it had about 4-5 episodes (which are pivotal for the story) with movie quality animation, but the rest were kind of average.
