The acting is actually related to reality........
cant get simpler than that since the story repeated twice
and he seems to said "i been waited by my friend" but meros think the other way.......

But in anyway......there's no point waiting coz his friend is dead.
The one the is running is not the author,I think is his friend instead. The last part got me >.<

this is the most powerful anme i have watched in quite a while, with extremely well-made animation.

The only thing I think that many people seem to get wrong a bit, is the part about the play involving the Damon and Pythias myth (which was later turned into the story around Meros and Selinuntius by Schiller)...or I see it that wrong.
As far as I understood it is never even made clear if they actually staged that play, because it serves more as a antithesis towards his friendship with the actor.
But even if, the Meros story he is writing is being written by him in the times when he already went to Tokyo...the play is only the connection to his memories, at least that is how I see it..
I think it is almost evident the play is staged at some point of time, almost exactly how we see it. There are however parts that are the writer's own illusion. And the boundary between reality and illusion is very vague, thats why it may seem confusing at times.

Meros thinks exactly the same way, he has to go back cause he is waited by his friend.

Thats why:

At the first part, before the author understood his friend, the one resembles running Meros is his friend. But later it is shown that the one whos really running is the author himself, and that should be also how the author sees the play later.

Anyway, I havent read its original novel, so dont know if it is explained more detailed there about how the friend thought, or how the sensei (author ) thinks later, but I think it is very strongly indicated at the end of the episode, when the woman called again to ask about the finishing script and told him about another job. The sensei (author) didnt react at first, but then smiled when theres a short screen flash of that watch.
This seemingly similar reaction to the last episode has in fact fundamentally different reason. This plus the smile and the watch, it suggests/proves that the author finally understands and truly trusts his friend.

tips get from narrator =P
=In reality=
to make him wait ~his friend(died)
to wait ~the author.during the hospital scene, the author said that he has waited his friend for so long thushis friend is just making him to wait
=In play=
to make him wait ~his friend(should be dead since the promise broke)
to wait ~the author

During the near ending,I am confuse whether which is Meros that connect to the play. But after when his friend's son gave the clock,I believe that the one who been holding and keeping the clock is his friend (after his friend throw out the train's window). His friend also suffer great trial during the journey till his death as is in play.During the play I notice the pendent is been carried by Meros after his friend gave him.

this story tell us that Meros is a total loser....the good point that Meros shown is that he treasure his friend which indeed he said it "very well done" just like in romoe and juliet.
The bad side that Meros shown is that he break the promises during the trial.coz of fear of death and just wanted to run away from the problem .Which I can clearly see how his mental state during the journey.
Having his friend as hostage surely as a human being will have to keep the promises right?Human sure is evil......(ohh i am human =P )
i think his friend is very trustworthy and he willing to become hostage to save his friend.

The moral of the story is "talk easy ,but doing is different story" (>.< It rhythm )
I believe that the king sentence Meros to death according to the predicament that i created at the top.

When you related the play into reality did you notice
The reality and the play are connected....same goes the ending

wow.. what an amazing arc..
overall, it's a good thing they mixed the original story with what happened to the author.. coz like he said, his work failed as a literature.. and at this age, i think a lot of us may not appreciate that story alone.. but this anime presented it in parallel with the author and it just turned to be a fine work of masterpiece.. it turned out to be a very strong tale of friendship and trust that i don't care about the bl depiction they did last week..

Amazing and powerful episode, had me teary eyed all the way through the second half of the episode.

So far I've enjoyed the adaptations of Dasai works the most hehe. All that might keep me giving this anime a real top score (more than 8) might be the inconsistencies in the arcs.

Not really as good as I expected to be but not to say it was bad. The second half was rather plain to me it deserved better than that for what it did in the first episode. Anyway, good episode.

Well my assumption from watching ep 9 was sort of correct :
Joushima had a chronic disorder henc he thought he might be in the way of the authors writing career which he deeply loved.
This is what : "Is it more painful for the person who makes the other wait"

Well the Joushima dying part made me cry a little.

Well me too , hence the anime world is gifting us a movie based on the 1st arc :)

Definitely, but the Souseki Natsume one was great too. Well, I don't really know what to say after such a display of Madhouse's animation and Dasai's litterary skill, it was close to perfection. Maybe : when do the last episode's sub for Mouryou no Hako comes out exactly, if it ever comes out? ;)

This is easily one of the greatest anime ever. Osamu Dazai is a god, I've read No longer Human and The Setting Sun, and this story was absolutely amazing. Its crazy how nobody is watching this show, a lot of people seem to have pretty bad taste to not even consider it. I was so hyped up about this when it was first announced, just from the animators list.
Best story yet, right next to No Longer Human. 11/10

on a different note, I know this arc was made by the guys that made Death Note and Bakuman. Does anyone know if the art will be like Run Melos and No Longer Human for the Bakuman anime?

Good evening Shroomie ^^
Shroomie said:
It gets a bit confusing whether Melos represents Joshima or Takada. Personally, I think it's both of them. At first it's Joshima. But when he falls ill, the tables turn and it's Joshima who's waiting for Takada. They show how frantic Takada is in his attempt to make it to his friend as fast as he can.

I think it the other way,I tought is Takada is waiting for Joshima.Since Joshima break Takada's promise.I think Joshima almost forgotten the promise.Did you know Takada suffer alot that he can't finnish the script that Joshima put so much hope in him.Well,Friends(Gay) must stay together ^^
Shroomie said:

from what his wife said, Joshima had also struggled to get to Tokyo to reunite with Takada. For the person who is waiting, it is easy to assume that their friend has forgotton all about them.

Yes its true, but his wife also said that Joshima already knew himself have a disease that couldn't be cure. But still, Joshima want to make the promises.
Comparison:
In the act Meros said that he is prepared to die because of his sin but he wanted to go to her sister's wedding ceremonial. So,Meros request for 3 day to go attend the wedding. As a prove of that he will coming back, he put his friend Serinentius as hostage.

Joshima knew he got disease but still he want to go to tokyo although its a struggle. He promise Takada he could play his written script

But this story is all bout Takada's motivation to finish his script.Did you realize that Takada is shock when he saw the clock. He is not even shock when he heard bout Joshima's story. When Takada leaving for Tokyo,Joshima did not left.Because of this,Takada is angry and throw the clock away out from the train's window.
Anway Takada gain back motivation to finnish off the script and happy ending.
Do you make a promise to a friend, when you know you can't make it?
Theres a probability that Joshima plan this whole up.....to make Takada finish his script.

Life is a stage, and we are tense under the bright lights of reality.

My goodness this series keeps getting better and better! The use of different yet beautiful animation styles, the short but thought-provoking story lines, even the background checks before introducing the stories in each episode bring about the tension and curiousity that leaves the viewer hungry for more. I have not seen an anime quite like this in a long time and I am quite relieved to finally see some amidst the myriad of bizarre and pointless animes out there.

The story of Run, Melos! is by far my favourite. It's tragic how this series is so short. It needs to be longer. :'[ Oh well...looking forward to the next episode.

Very dramatic and emotional ep. The best so far 10/10. How can it get better than this? Also, some scenes had some very Satoshi Kon-esque vibes---with reality merging with the play and all.
