a guy once said: Fan service in anime is as expected as sad commuters in snow!

and since it's snowing outside...well either way, what do you guys 'n gals think? I mean beyond the bare chests-regardless of being flat or not :_:- and all that, does it sometimes get distasteful? maybe even prevent you from watching a show? or, not?

also, how well could it be used as a plot device, not just as a means to make people watch more?

fire away...

I don't mind fan service as long as it's warranted. Like I don't like to see anti gravity skirts, or clothes in situations that don't make sense, or the entire episode where the cast goes to the beach or the hot springs.

Mainly I hate fan service that is counter productive to the plot or situation. Also shows that are nothing but fanservice make no sense to me, it's like why not just make a hentai at that point? You virtually have no plot, your more interested in getting the girl naked then anything else. So why bother? It's like buying a car but they don't give you the Key.

If you mean fan service as in panties shots, cleavages, exposed breasted, hot springs/public baths then I love that shit especially if it is a comedy anime.

If it's a comedy anime, then I wouldn't mind/care. If it's an action, adventure anime, I wouldn't mind a few but I hope there isn't much that would ruin the show.

Is this about general shows or anime?

Fan service is stupid, it's either so ubiquitous that it's unnoticeable, or so blatant it catapults you out of the show. Either way it does nothing for the story.

As long as it fits my taste, and won't annoy me. Honestly, there's only two outcomes. Either i like it or not.

I can tolerate fan service to a certain extent, but not if the entire anime is plot-less and just relies on panty shots and cleavages to get an audience.

The idea that showing something sexual or of the human body is thought of as "fan-service" while other things which essentially service the audience are not, is problematic and nonsensical to the point of silly.

And about that "taking away from the plot" thing, if a bit of body show off is considering distracting from the "real meat" of the show, then it's not a well built show to begin with and you're just focusing on the sexuality or skin as a scapegoat. Did Gurren Lagann suffer from "fanservice getting in the way of the show", when Kamina was always half naked, making ambiguously statements about manliness toward Simon that looked like yaoi, Yoko's ridiculous Gainaxing and clothing that looked like a napkin, plus being all over Simon all the time? Not according to the majority of the mal fanbase.

I think it did, Even though I liked Gurren Lagaan but I thought fan service basically ruined Yoko as a character, She had no purpose other then being a vehicle for fan service when she could have easily filled the roll as being Simons support, and it seemed like she never got over Kamina's death and it was almost like she was being punished for what ever reason and mainly she contributed nothing to the show.

I don't mind it at all unless like Sephor said it's censored; then it's annoying as hell.

Besides, when I see a lot of fan-service, I know well enough that it's time to park my brain somewhere. It's the only way to enjoy the series - being critical will never help.

You guys, didn't enjoy Ikkitousen and Queen's Blade? Those two were a blast - of shirts, skirts, tops and underwear...

That's the only way to get through it really :P .. A good non-sensical anime is fine every now and then.

As long as fan service doesn't get to the point where it ruins the characters and story, its all good. I really don't mind that one ep in every anime ever conceived that has the whole gang going to the beach or some resort. Boobs and panties are fine and all, but don't force it, then its just really lame.

Fanservice is great aslong as it's done in acceptable times and amount.

taking Agent Aika and Najica Blitz Tactics as an example. these shows just make you lose your boner over time because they would be better off giving the characters no skirts at all.

however when used in a natural way to simply embarras a sertain character or spice things up for a slight moment it can provide very pleasing scenes.
of course this only counts for comedy/romance series.

when you start including this stuff to serious anime it makes the anime lose it's value and standing. and saying this i'm talking about stuff like Darker Than Black.
not sometihng like Ikkitousen.

Fan service like pantie shots, bouncing boobs, bubble butts, etc. should stay in ecchi or comedy shows. It's pointless, distracting, and ruins the story when they put it in serious action or dramas *cough codegeass cough*.

^ This. We really don't need a 30 second freeze shot of the exposed area. And if you're going to put fan service. Leave out the censor >_>. What's the point in exposing boobies if you're going to cover it up with stream? =_=

I hate fan service when they are out of place or unnecessary. I'm looking at you FMP!

and I tend to dislike "trip to the hot spring" episodes as it interfere with the plot.

However, there are some ecchi anime out there that's done well.

Sora no Otoshimono is the more recent one.

This.

I don't mind much if it's a comedy anime, but sometimes it gets out of hand in an action anime which can be annoying..

i dont like fanservice that just comes out of nowhere, like in gundam 00 where it's about war and politics, suddenely out of nowhere, there's a beach episode.

i do like fanservice that is relevant, such as in BECK, when music references are thrown at you. thats fine because it pertains to the series about rock bands and music, so making a reference to ramones or nirvana is perfectly fine and enjoyable.

As long as the anime isn't centered around the fan-service I'm generally all for it.

Eh, who am I kidding? Throw in some guns and fan-service and I'm good to go. If it even remotely complements the plot chances are I'll give it a try.

I don't mind fan-service but I hate when they mean to show you <insert body part here> and then use either steam or some ray of light that comes from outta no where. It is different if it is "naturally" censored though.

It annoys the hell out of me. Fan-service in a show is implying that I, the viewer, am so simple-minded as to be pleased with a little bit of sex thrown in here and there. I think it's insulting and really rarely can enjoy a show once I know that it was made for people like that.

Not to mention that half the women in anime are just there so fan-service can happen in the first place (And it's hardly just in anime). That's a really narrow and irritating view of women; as if the only purpose for their existence is gawking and voyeurism. Few people will admit that that's how they feel, but I think service exists and is so popular because that really is a pervasive mindset, even if subconsciously.

Well I don't think this is a general rule, I'm watching Mnemosyne and actually it suits an horror anime. Just that it has been abused in some retarded way these days.

I was waiting for someone to reference the occasional shower scene/ amnesia woman undressed/ ridiculous angles of Kallen while in her Guren :P

For an anime so serious, they really like to throw those moments out there :O

I think DTB 2nd season's lip licking shot was already HQ fans service.
