So, spinoffs usually aren't great as they often try to piggyback off other, better series. So I'm wondering if you know any spinoffs that are good, or even as good as or better than the original story.

Manga:
I haven't read a lot of One Piece. But One Piece Episode A by Boichi was pretty good.
My Hero Academia: Vigilante's story is in my opinion better than the original MHA manga.

Anime:
Thus spoke Kishibe Rohan is just as if not more bonkers than Diamond is Unbreakable.
I have heard Gun Gale Online is better than Sword Art Online.

Tonegawa is probably the best one I can think of. It´s in fact better than some Kaiji arcs.

Not in terms of quality or story. I gave DIU a 10/10 and Rohan an 8/10. But I'm talking craziness in terms of situations Rohan is put in. Like The Run is amazing in my opinion.
DIU is among my top 5, Rohan isn't. But i still loved Rohan.

Ah, I see and agree, we actually rated both the same! rohan as a show is definitely more bizarre, and like you said especially at the run. i one hundred percent agree with pretty much everything you said

Railgun also first comes to mind, it's even better than the original Toaru.

And Tensura nikki, I enjoyed it more than the main Tensura.

Teeechnically not a spin-off I think? But it IS a seperate story set in the same universe: Kaito Kid 1412 from the Detective Conan universe.

Since someone brought up anime games:
Persona is just as great as the mainline SMT games, if not better ;)

It doesn't have an anime (yet) but if Wolf & Parchment is ever adapted I think it could be almost as highly regarded as Spice & Wolf.
The criteria I use when rating shows is on my profile.

I've heard of that. One guy I talked to said it would be a better place to start than the original Saint Seiya. What do you think?

Lost Canvas is a stand alone series so it doesnt need the OG Saint Seiya besides, the orginal series was very imporant for its time, since then it inspired newer anime that picked up on its good things an improved upon them, the old series isnt worth watching at this point

Lost Canvas does its own thing, you can just watch it without the old series

I enjoyed war on geminar more than regular old Tenchi. I read that it was originally going to be a completely distinct entity with the Tenchi connection tacked on to boost sales but now that the fourth Tenchi season devoted so much time in strengthening the connection, War on Geminar is placed firmly in the Tenchi canon. Or at least one of the canons. Tenchi Muyo is a weird franchise.
Speaking of Tenchi Muyo, Magical Girl Pretty Sammy is also a very enjoyable spin off. Just the TV version though. The OVA doesn't do much.

I was gonna fill this post with gundam entries but what is a spin off when it comes to this franchise?
Are AUs spin offs or are they too similar to the original? Does that mean that only the oddball AUs like G Gundam, X and Turn A are spin offs? The build series is definitely a spin off. What about MS IGLOO though? It's UC but it's very uncoventional both in visual and narrative style. Every series I mentioned by name except the first Build Divers is good btw.

well just a different take, i would prefer if someone actually pulls kurumi tokisaki and put her inside a good fantasy anime so she can be as great as saber in fate stay night if not surpassing her.

as for spin off, i think movies / series from popular shows would be acceptable for any fan.
i would prefer to see kirito trapped inside a different kind of virtual gear where he can solely focus on survival instead of getting a waifu cause he already got asuna. but if it's risky to butcher kirito character then just expand based on the

"Take the young female character / little sister and make her a Magical Girl" has long been a pretty good formula for a long time now, as with Pretty Sammy and Lyrical Nanoha, mentioned above. I'd also add Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya.

And I dare say Nanoha's been successful enough that many don't even know it was a spinoff of another franchise to begin with.

Everything that connects to MAL

Contains Ecchi, but not Tagged Ecchi: Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3

i really struggled to answer this, as most of the spin-offs that i've watched and liked, are still probably worse than what inspired them by a decent margin and even of those, most were already mentioned here, but then i thought about a pretty good answer.

the cat returns is a great movie and one of those cool ghibli movies that are both great, while also different than most other works of the studio and was directed by someone that isn't the immediate name that you associate with said studio.

i would even go as far as to say that i liked it more than whisper of the heart (which i've also liked), but that might not be a popular sentiment.

I haven’t read or watched a lot of spinoffs for anime and manga, so here are two spinoffs that both come from Fist of the North Star.
Legends of the dark king. (Anime spinoff with Raoh as the main character, takes place before his first appearance in the original series).
And Jagi Gaiden: The flower of carnage(I’m kinda biased because Jagi is my favorite character from the series but this manga is really good, a prequel showing Jagi’s adolescence and his fall to villainy).
