Hi there, fellow MAL wanderers! After just passing 100 mark for number of watched animes(rookie numbers, but please bear with me) I decided to have set myself a few criteria, some stuff that makes me wanna drop an anime immediately, kinda like red flags: (Please, please don't hurt me, just wanna have normal discussion) 1-School Theme is very major, and that "new transfer student" thingy, instant drop, no second chance 2-I am [insert name here] starts explaining every nook and cranny of plot right off the bat(I wanna understand some stuff myself you know) 3-assuming there is a good looking boy, passes a hallway, everyone be like" woah, he's hot"/ same but for girl "wow, she's pretty" That's simplified and shortened version of ut, wouldn't dare to name more Soooo... What are your red flags? |

My signs -I dislike the Mc -I believe a meteor destroying their world would be good. -MC has no worthwhile conflicts -Edgy and dumb -Character pretends to be smart when everyone around him/her has a 1 digit iq. The most important thing for any series is to give the viewer something to care about like the characters, story, or even humor. |

- Whiny/overtly angsty teen mc - male mc who's afraid of women and acts like an incel - overtly cliche characters, particularly uber dominant obnoxious women - bad humor, too much fanservice/lewd jokes - woman pandering, SJW content, SJW appeasing - shonen ai/shoujo ai, yaoi/yuri - too much engrish - Too many characters who have retarded names - Annoying characters who constantly make wrong decisions - Overpowered characters - Goody two shoes who wants to save everybody - superficial, girly sugar sweet kids anime - etc. I can watch anime with many of the mentioned flaws and I'm not always that picky but most of the time because I feel like my life is too short to spent too much time with crap. |

I generally stick to the 3 episode rule before dropping but sometimes it's obvious way sooner than that whether or not a show is worth watching. It's usually cliches that seal the deal. I don't mind anime cliches when they're done at least semi-competently but sometimes it's like a checklist of tropes as if the show was made by a soulless AI. |

I guess I don't really have any. The overall "feel" of a show is usually what makes me stick with it or drop it, rather than individual elements. There are things that make me doubt an anime will be good (for example, a clingy imouto character, named "superpowers" in sports anime, or a "save the club!" main plot in school anime), but nothing in particular that would make me instantly drop something without giving it a chance. I've liked plenty of anime with these things in it, and more, even if these things annoy me by themselves. I would have missed out on many pleasant surprises, even some of my favorites, if I had some kind of criteria or firm list of things I would and wouldn't watch. |

If I don't feel like bothering to watch the next episode or if I forget to, then I drop it. Sometimes I might come back later, sometimes not. Most of Spring 2022's seasonal anime I dropped after the 1st episode, but I might come back to them after they complete. A lot of Winter 2022's seasonals I dropped after 8 episodes, but I may come back and complete them later. If I'm not invested enough to binge episode after episode, than most of the time, I will drop the anime. I dropped Mirai Nikki after 19/26 episodes. I dropped Love Live! School Idol Project after 9/13 episodes. I dropped Nichijou 10/26 episodes. I dropped Ousama Ranking 20/23 episodes (I might come back to it later). I dropped Battle Game in 5 seconds after 6/12 (I read the manga and didn't feel like watching it again). Perfectly good anime, but for some reason I didn't bother to continue watching after some point. I got bored and distracted by something else. 😐 Some dropped anime I won't come back to include: The Promised Neverland: Season 2; Deep Insanity: The Lost Child; Kendenshi; Try Knights; etc., etc. etc. Because they sucked lmaooooo. |

It's nothing really specific. Usually a few episodes are enough to tell me whether or not an anime is going to be for me. I have gotten farther in certain series. But I ultimately ended up discontinuing them at a point and not returning back to them. I just don't believe in forcing yourself to watch something you don't like as watching TV is supposed to be a leisure and enjoyable activity. Often times, people who I see watching series that they don't like all the way through end up being very disappointed or being toxic to communities who enjoy those shows just because they weren't able to understand the hype or had broken expectations. I of course don't imagine myself being one of those people. But nevertheless, it's just TV. Everyone is going to have their different tastes and criteria for shows they like, and some people just have to accept that. |

Myself rather avoid childish looking animes too, oh well, everything has its own audience and of course, you wouldn't wanna watch sequel of something, if I didn't like the original Thanks for the insight, I can agree on all of your 3 points |

Dropping it immediately is giving it a chance. It had the chance to not do any of the shit that makes it get dropped immediately. Based on the reactions I've had to recently announced and released anime, I'd say the biggest red flag for myself is just an evident lack of creativity. Repetitive concepts, sticking to tropes of the genre, shallow characters, and so forth. For that reason, I've come to avoid the Shounen, Sports, Romance and Isekai genres almost entirely, and most things based of Light Novels, since those all rarely produce anything worthwhile. ryo-san said: The isekai tag and a stupid looking generic male character in medieval clothing and/or carrying ugly looking sword and a filthy stinky shield represented on the cover poster.. I think you're conflating some mediocre dark fantasy you read once with reality. The medieval period was a lot more complex and far less dramatic than you're claiming, about the only thing you're right about is that there was widespread poverty. |
