Do You Believe "It Gets Good After 300+ Episodes"?

The number written was arbitrary, but you get the idea; it is about continuing to watch long-running anime franchises such as Gintama, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Detective Conan, Naruto, and so on, even if you are not enjoying the series.

Do you take the advice and force yourself to watch? Or do you ignore the advice and go watch something else?

If it's boring it's boring. Better way to spend my time is watching something interesting.

@Deago Cant be a masterpiece for me if there are 50 or more shit episodes.

Yes, but if you disregard that genuine advice, you may miss a masterpiece that would have been on your list of favourite anime.

Going from liking it a little to liking it a lot is possible.

But from disliking it to loving it? Nope, unless there are some relevant changes in terms of production value or animation studio from one season to another.

If it's a reasonable number like 3-5 episodes then I might be willing to watch that far, but otherwise, no I don't believe that statement.

Me: "I'm not liking [insert long anime]"
Them:: "Oh but it gets good after 300 episodes"
Me: "So can I skip to episode 300 then?"
Them: "No, it gets better because you grow to love the characters and see them evolve and there's a lot of in-jokes so you need to see those episodes"
Me: "So you're expecting me to sit through 7,200 minutes of content that isn't that good?"
Them: "Yeah, but just wait. Once you get to episode 300 it's an absolute masterpiece"

Yeah right - as if I'm going to do that. If it's not good for 300 episodes then maybe it's just not that good. Either way, I'm not wasting my time on it...

I barely believe the "it gets good after 3 episodes"
All anime that I consider good are good since the beginning. They get better, but they already started good.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

Haven't had this problem with long series yet, but if that happened I would probably just drop it.

Currently watching Gintama, and I'm quite enjoying it.

Absolutely not. For example, I really like One Piece, but if someone doesn't at least LIKE early OP, saying "watch until 130 episodes in, watch until 250 episodes in" and so on isn't gonna do anything. It's just a positive escalation of something that's already there, so if someone doesn't like the base flavour, they won't suddenly be blown away by getting that flavour heightened. If they generally like it but are just a bit bored by the more episodic, meandering style of the early episodes, I'd just tell them outright that the plot becomes a lot more focused about 20 episodes in.

People keep telling me Black Clover gets good 80 episodes in, and Asta won't be the most obnoxious screaming unbearable character in the history of anime gradually, but I'm not sitting through 80 episodes of pure suffering for it MAYBE, potentially, becoming slightly less unbearable.

I did that once, with HxH, I didn't like it much, and people always said "noo you need to continue, it gets really good once you get to Yorknew" and I disliked Yorknew, so they said "you HAVE to watch to Chimera Ant!" and I absolutely hated Chimera Ant arc. In the end, I had watched like 100 episodes of a show I didn't enjoy, with the most suggested arcs being my least favourite ones. Never again. Tastes differ, and if you don't like something 10 episodes in, chances are, you're not gonna start enjoying it 90 episodes later. And even if you did, was that worth sitting through 100 episodes of something genuinely unpleasant? No.

TL;DR
If you kind of enjoy a show, continuing to watch it til it gets better is fine. If you hate a show from the start, it's not gonna suddenly turn into something perfect for your taste, so no need to waste time on it.

Depends on the presentation more than anything.
If a person already likes aspects of a show but they're wondering when it peaks or it hasn't really clicked then the "it gets good after X episode" has a lot more substance to it.

If a person hates the show initially, say hating the characters, the premise, etc. Then the "it gets good" will likely never apply to them.
From the examples listed sure Conan has some particularly strong arcs later on but if a person hates episodic mystery series then there's really no reason for them to continue because that's most of the show.

I like long running series because for me they are good from the start. So, I don't have that kind of problems and there are actually some series that gets worse the more you watch example bleach the later arcs are worse than soul society arc so if someone don't like soul society I don't think there are going to like the other arcs.

If it gets good by episode 3 or 4 then I will barely hang on, and even then I have to find some aspect I enjoy. If someone tells me it gets good in season 3 or in episode 75 why should I force myself to watch something garbage- the good stuff won't change the time I wasted lol.

It's advice you should take only if you find it moderately enjoyable to begin with. If it feels like you're wasting your time then it's unlikely your opinion will do a 180.

300 episodes are just too much of an ask for me. The max I can take is probably 12 or 13 episodes.

Gintama can be enjoyed from episode 3 itself but if you want the actual stuff for which it is known for, you need to watch until ep 57 (Benizakura arc)
One Piece gets good around episode 35 (when arlong park arc starts)
Bleach takes about 20-30 episodes. Once you reach soul society arc, you gonna get hooked up (just skip the damn fillers espically the bount arc)
About Naruto....uhhh idk it was pretty generic for me the whole time. Kid naruto still somewhat gets good from chunin exam part but went down back again real quick after that.
/
I personally can wait long enough for good content. It's better than watching some overrated short anime. The ones who say "it takes hundreds of episode to get good" are mostly just haters who haven't watched it. They complain about their fav 12 episode anime being short and then shit on other long running ones
/
Tho I'll say that it's fine to drop if you don't like it but then you simply can't give a valid opinion on it

If a long anime doesn't get good for you early, please don't watch it. Your only wasting your time and sanity. Find something you'll really enjoy instead of forcing yourself to watch something you don't enjoy.

Most of the time it means those who likes the first few episodes will like the show even more after 300 eps. For people who absolutely hate the first episodes though, it will only get worse from there.

I don't mean to sound like someone that's never touched grass before, but a lot of the stuff I watch is for the sake of completion and gaining experience. It's not deliberate, but it's come to that after all I've done in the last 3 years. I'll 100% watch something as far through as I need to if I had the will to start it in the first place, if that makes sense. Of course, starting the show itself is another story.

I feel like I am getting Déjà vu about this thread.

Why would I watch 25 episode of a series, I am not enjoying let alone 300+. Regardless of short or long, not good is not good.

I feel like these kind of thread is aimed at people who lack the ability to pick up the tone or buildup or foreshadowing of a story. So things suddenly gets good or bad for them because they cant predict.

Well the beginning is not so bad, but it turns to garbage rather quickly. There is just a few high episodes in the entire anime. The rest of it range between absolutely terrible to generic shounen shit.

if the anime is able to interest me after like ep3- or 10 eps and I find myself still watching, I could convince myself that it will get better at some point.

Hahahahahaha! Convincing myself, huh? It doesn't work. At some point, I would hit a wall.
I convinced myself for-
One Piece- now, I am stuck at ep 1004
Bleach- now stuck at some point around 200
D. Grayman- I am stuck around somewhere at ep 30
World Trigger- stuck around somewhere at ep 35
Patalliro- stuck at somewhere between 10-15.
Detective Conan- I can't get past ep 1.

The list goes on and on. I will always get stuck at some point but I will always place it on hold and regain interest later on.
As for Detective Conan, I am sorry but I had to drop the entire series because I couldn't get past even half of the episode.

If a show gets bearable after 100s of episodes then I don't bother honestly. There are tons of shows which have less than 30 episodes and provide great entertainment. A show at least must be enjoyable so that I can sit through all episodes. If every episode is an insult to my intellect then I see no point in continuing such shows post 25th episode.

Depends on how bearable you like it and make a judgement for yourself. I would say for Gintama if you still dont like it by episode 60-61 then just drop it.

It starts good, first 3-4 episodes are very good. But the first 2 stages of Hunter Exam(the first Arc) are pretty boring which takes 3 or 4 episodes. I was hooked from episode 10 or so. And it gets better and better from there.

I will advise you to not watch it expecting to much fights like the other generic battle shounen ... Naruto, Demon Slayer ,Mha. Main focus of HxH is characterization and character development.

The longest Arc ,Chimera Ants is considered one of the best arc in anime. You may find first half of Chimera ants slow and boring, but things start going crazy from the 2nd Half , whole streak of 25 episodes (111-136) is amazing.

I don't know why anyone who would say that but most of these get good at least 20 or 30 episodes in.

Detective conan is episode so if you don't like the first episode then chances are you won't like the entire thing.

Naruto when he's a kid isn't that great but shippuden us better.

One piece starts with character introduction arcs so if you don't care about the first set of characters like Usopp's arc, to me it was good when they introduced Sanji in episode 30.

Dragon ball when Goku is a kid it's more or less the same until the tournament but you either like it at the start or not. DBZ is usually where most people prefer it.

You don't have to force yourself to watch anything but too many people give it before they begin or they feel it's too long so why bother?

Do you plan on only watching anime for a few years and then quit? Is that why some don't want to invest in long shows? If you're in it for the long haul to watch anime for 30 years or whatever, then watching one anime for a few months or even half a year should be nothing.

If you think of it in terms of Numbers-Needed-to-Watch (NNW) for you to land a good show after sitting through a lot of bad episodes, you will realize it's not worth it.

If a show is actually that good afterward, you will hear about it anyway eventually. The chance of you missing out a hidden gem from not doing the "3 ep rule" is actually very slim.

Naruto gets good during chunin exams, which is around episode 20
Bleach at Soul Society, which is around episode 20 as well.
One Piece, accroding to some of it's fans, at Arlong Park, which yes, starts at episode 69, but for me it was Arabasta, which starts at epsidoe 155.
Gintama gets to it's best at around 75 episodes.
Detective conan is pretty much the same thought the whole thing, but the introduction of Ai Haibara at around epsiode 110 pretty much sets a before and after for the series.

And as someone said up there, if you are like me and have been watching anime for years and don't plan to stop any time soon, commiting to these popular long shows is not hard.

I have other +100 episodes shows planned for the near and not so near future.

I'm just in it for the journey. Whether it gets good or not or I enjoy it or not doesn't matter to me, I'll just watch it. I think it's worth it for the experience or the novelty of doing so (whatever novelty there is). You could say it's better to spend my time on something I'll actually enjoy, which I agree to an extent, but there could be potential great moments in a show that I may miss because I didn't watch them. If I didn't decide to continue watching Pokemon despite thinking of it as some low effort cash grab, I would've missed some pretty great scenes that wouldn't have had the same impact if not for the episode count, and because I went through a bunch of those sequels, I was able to get more enjoyment out of the movies and everything that I would have otherwise not have enjoyed; partly because I spent so much time with the characters, and also due to this, I started to enjoy the series as a whole a lot more. I like shows that take tons of investment and devotion to get into, because even if I don't find it to be very entertaining, once I'm hooked, I'm hooked for good! I just don't have the same connection with shorter shows.

As for when I hate it, I'll continue it anyways just so I have something to hate on or laugh at and see if it gets better or worse. Even if it's the latter, I'll still have fun riding a wobbly train that is heading straight towards a cliff.

If you find it a complete chore to watch 50 episodes of a particular long-running series, then chances are, it’s not going to get any better. In cases like these, it’s better to just drop the anime and find one that is enjoyable for you. Not every anime is made for everyone, and that’s totally fine.

I think One Piece turned to shit after 300 episode rather than good after 300 episodes. I enjoyed it from episode one until the new era.
Same thing with Gintama, but never like the serious parts of that show. Enjoyed the comedy arcs.
