So between them, Takaki's the only one who left alone and Akari moves on with their relationship in the end, huh?

If you're still freshed from being heartbroken, then better not to watch it yet (or never).

8/10 for this

The only character I really feel bad about is Kanae since she suffered and seemed like the only person lacking the agency to do something about it. Takaki could have had a great girlfriend in her, but he never even considered her because of a girl he didn't try to get closer to. Akari simply moved on, finding a reliable fiancee who makes her happy, so all is good for her.

Overall Grading
1. Characters. +0.5 | Kanae was a great character and so was her sister. Akari also gets a pass for how she actually managed to move on with her life instead of allowing Takaki to drag her back forever.
2. Atmosphere. +1 | Even in the bits that I didn't like *cough* Episode 3 *cough* the atmosphere was good and felt very real.
3. OST. +0.5 | It was okay
4. Visuals. +1 | I would always give a bonus score for a nice hand-drawn animation.
5. Background story. +1 | The setup was perfect by itself. A very classic story could be told from it Takaki had managed to get together with Akari, and a more unusual development where he did decide to go for Kanae it would make the final result even stronger. Unfortunately...
6. Storyline. +0.5 | The story is convincing from start to end. Yet we could have seen much more in the final episode, at least some signs of how Takaki was(not) trying to get closer to Akari.
7. Ending. +0 | I'm not gonna lie, I hate this ending, it's in fact one of my most hated endings to date(out of 250 titles on my list). Is it something that might happen in real life? Yes. Does that mean that it's a resolution that contributes to my world constructively in any way? Definitely no. Neither it is a story that I actually wanted to be told.
8. Drama. +1. Now now, I'm not contradicting everything I said up until this point. This whole grade goes to the drama portrayed in Episode 2.
9. Overall affect. +0. I didn't like this story at all and I am sure that it's not going to be one of the things that I come to appreciate in retrospection.
10. Bonus score: 1 | Second episode alone deserves some more love, it was like something out of my favourite Romance stories to come from Japanese media. It's almost funny how this love for it makes me hate the whole thing even more.
Overall Score: 6.5/10, I'm giving it the extra .5 needed by MAL's decimal scoring system for a final 7/10, solely for the handcrafted detail and Kanae's story.

Extra
Episode 2 was the highlight personally, maybe in a world where the final episode tells a different story this would be different too. Unfortunately in this world the first episode is a setup for a tragic ending (Takaki started smoking and drinking some heavy stuff, and even disregarding his age those are bad symptoms of what's going on inside him), or in the very best interpretation - a really dramatic one (he moves, but not because it's really his choice, but because he is not really left with any - Akari has already found her happiness).
But Episode 2 was beautiful in every meaning of the word. I would otherwise unsee the whole thing (if such a thing was possible), but it alone is worth trying to get over the heavy stuff that comes with the main story.

Well after rewatching after nearly a decade its still as depressing as the first time around. No fantastical elements or serious physical maladies needed, just the depression of never getting over your first love. I do wish Kanae got some courage and confessed, perhaps she could have slapped some sense into him, or if not got that emotional weight off. Instead it seems she is lingering on the past just like Takaki.

Takaki glo up. He looked good as an adult

I didn’t think I would cry but the song playing at the end with the montage of the other scenes made me cry. There’s not “much” to the story because that’s just how it is sometimes. Life just happens, people come & go....everything is fleeting....... I hope Takaki, the people like Takaki, can find their own happiness one day.

but i’ll probably remember over and over again
you were there and everyone else was there
— the day we all searched for just one thing

The most flawless, thematically comprehensive animated work I've seen as of yet.

1. Theme: slow, gradual changes
  • title
  • bgm
  • overall pacing of the movie itself
  • cherry blossoms
    • slow, of course
    • fleeting, short-lasting (akin to Takaki's first love)
    • present during Takaki and Akari's first scene together
    • possibly spring = beginning
  • snow
    • also light and slow
    • quiet, muted
      • perhaps "things left unsaid" e.g. the letters/texts Takaki and Akari never sent, maybe even Kanae failing to confess
    • present at the last scene Takaki and Akari are together in part 1 (as kids)
    • possibly winter = ending

2. Juxtapositions (first part vs. third part especially)
  • the freakin train
    • part 1:
      • Akari waits hours for Takaki to arrive
      • Takaki waits anxiously and impatiently on the train
    • part 3:
      • Akari doesn't even wait a few minutes for the train to finish crossing
      • Takaki waits patiently and in a relaxed manner

3. Part 2: Cosmonaut (the most straightforward)
  • Kanae (cosmonaut) longs for something far away and out of reach (Takaki)
  • Takaki (cosmonaut) also longs for something far away and out of reach (Akari)

Am I the only one who had a hard time understanding this anime?
Well, when I first hear about it I had high hopes. Then I watched it...*no emotions*...*processing in my brain*...*slowly walk towards the toilet*...*sits there for a while*...*tears start falling from my eyes*...
Yes it took me a long time to understand this one. And I cried because I was angry...angry at all three characters. It was really frustrating to see all of them suffering like that...
But now after so many months...I can relate to this anime. Distance is a cruel thing for sure. It can tear you apart. Also teach you a lot of things.

This movie hit harder if you are in your mid/late 20s.
I highly suggest rewatching when you're much older to those who think it shitty ending.

It's a lesson to take initiative before she fall our of your reach. This is reality to you if you're still single and all you do is working without much things going on in life while all your friends are married and had kids.

Okay what was the point of this movie? It is obvious that people will grow apart when they don't see each other for a long time. I don't feel anything about the ending because both Akari and Tonoo didn't do much to keep in touch after the events of the first act. They had phones and could have called and not just email each other. They could have arranged to meet like they did the first time. It is inevitable for things to end like this. Why would I feel sad when the characters themselves don't care? It was also kinda out of character for Tonoo to constantly think of Akari in highschool but not do any more attempts to meet again. If he did, the movie should have showed those attempts.
It wasn't outright bad but I would say this movie was pretty underwhelming. Not much going for it except the animation. 6/10.

I would say, yeah it's a very sad ending, for any type of long distance relationships. Both grew apart and felt through what's in their life ahead in the future. The MC got with a girl, perhaps not satisfied(?) i couldn't understand what was tried to conveyed in the end credits. But as per the FMC, she perhaps moved on with someone of her choice.

They both still think about their childhood times and dream about it.

The second ep was really heart touching. Sumida really did her hard work, yet couldn't able to confess. The feelings stayed beneath.

Ill just never understand what was the point of the second episode, mainly since it brought nothing to the third episode.

The second episode should have also included how the female MC was doing since they were separated, and not just the male MC.  As of now, that second episode is pointless.

Dont get me wrong, the girl on the second episode was much cuter than the female MC.

The point of the second episode is that while he was dwelling in the past, he was missing out on various opportunities life offered him. Just like you saw, he had another girl (Kanao) chasing after him since day one in his new school, but he didn't pay attention and didn't think much of it, as he was focused on something unattainable.

Basically, the girl realized that there was no chance with him, she just accepted it and moved on with her life through pain, unlike our main character, Takaki, who continued to stay in one place where he had been for years. Regardless of Kanao chasing him for years, she let him and her hopes go, but the guy still couldn't let go of his past and hopes.

There are things in life which people have to understand, accept and move on no matter how hard it could be, and people who get stuck in one place, ignore everything that's going on around them, become depressed and let their life go downhill.

People who say this is a waste of time are wrong. People who say this is a horrible life lesson are wrong. This movie is about the inevitability and sporadic nature of everyday life. Not everyone has a fairytale ending in life. This is a couple of short stories that show that life can take something great, right out of your life. Takaki had the girl of his dreams, but their lives took each other away from one another. Kanae met the love of her life, but chose not to interfere with him because she didn't want to be rejected. Life is about doing whatever you can to get your ideal outcome. Not the best outcome, but the one you want. Not everyone will be able to achieve this. But that is the beauty of life. Love every moment you have with the people you love. Because no one knows what is going to happen next. Cherish your family and friends and relationships. No one knows how long they might last, but if you can have at least one good memory with them, then you fulfilled what you need to do. This movie is a heartbreak love story, where the main characters face the inevitability of life, and take it head on. 8/10 for me.

the ending probably wasn't the most satisfying to see for most i believe. and that's because it was realistic. but that's what i really liked about it, the way it truthfully depicts the sad reality. it just makes sense to see how it's not always the happy ending, that the reality itself is very different than how we expect it to be sometimes. it truly shows how things do change over time, as people drift apart and move on with their lives, how fickle people's lives and relationships are. coming from a realistic point of view, i think it was reflected quite well.
as much as i like this movie, i can't seem to get rid of the void it left within me just yet...

I prefer Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light as it does a better job of having a more well written story, while also being a shorter movie type experience. They both have a similar sad endings, that leave you feeling similarly empty as the main characters loss of love. It really does feel like its missing something as the 3rd part feels like it should be Akari's perspective and we can see how she is now that they have drifted so far apart and go more into her character.

For the time I am sure it was pretty ground breaking for the time and helped inspire the next generation of creators, but it does shows its age in my opinion. I still enjoyed it but its not something I would rewatch for myself.

Still the peak of Shinkai after all these years. The mood and tone is perfect, even better here than in his recent works.

So many replies in this thread didn't get how long distance relationship works, or rather doesn't work. It is unsustainable, especially for teenager, especially before internet becomes the norm. No matter how badly you try to keep up the communication, texts and voices just aren't the same as in person human contact. They simply aren't enough. As you meet new people and life demands more and more responsibility, there'll be less and less room to linger about your lost relationship. That final thread of connection will slowly fade, and eventually it will snap. It's painful but one day that small part of your life will become a bittersweet memory that you can look back and smile about.

It's better nowadays because social media and all that, but this film came out in 2007 people.

Speaking from a first-hand experience.

Story 3: 5 Centimeters per secomd

Seems like sometime later they lost touch and stopped writing letters to each other.

So Tohno had been in a 3 yr relationship with someone else after getting into a college in Tokyo I presume. But he had recently broken up with her. Whereas Akari recently moved to Tokyo and is presumable with someone else now.

In my opinion, The last time they met at the train station, they turned back to see each other but Akari didn't wait and went off. I think it symbolises that she has now moved on whereas when she was young, she waited for Tohno at the train station.

Both of them are leading vastly different lives now. Both of them have moved on from each other now. Both of them aren't just 5 cm apart anymore.

It actually took me a while to realise that all of these stories revolved around Akari and Tohno. I realised this while seeing the montage in the 3rd story where they showed Sumida crying when Tohno left for college.

The art was so polished. As expected of Comix Wave. The music used in the final montage scene was kinda meh though.

I know I mentioned this before but I respect this story for not taking the "they lived happily forever" route. This just shows parting, and moving on are painful but significant and normal parts of our life. Maybe life isn't always a fairytale where you stay in touch with your childhood crush and marry each other when you grow up. Sometimes, it's just about letting go and leading your life. Just going with the flow even if it means bumping into a few problems along the way.

I really liked the overall theme of this movie. I honestly, wasn't expecting much when I thought of watching this movie. But it sure displayed some great messages, themes and situations. It was a fairly decent and enjoyable watch. 7/10 for me.

its like the movie was trying to convey that sometimes separation from a love one is unavoidable but in the movie they both did zero efforts to reunite or stay in touch, we have the dude writing texts he never sends and the girl only calling him once she is getting married, it feels so nonsensical, this was an outcome they could have avoid but no, the plot wanted them to end up separate because it wouldnt have been sad otherwise
