In your opinion, what is the most popular anime in your country?

Imo, it is probably SAO.

I think it is SAO because all my friends and cousins (who watches anime) know it and like it too.

I think it's Pokemon for Canada and the USA.

Exactly what I was thinking. KnY has been getting ridiculous given how recent it is, but Pokemon has just been THE thing for decades, and it has the sales figures to back it up.

I promise you, whatever it is, it's definitely not SAO. Only anime fans know SAO. So it can't compete with more mainstream stuff that even the generation of our parents (or given the age of some users, grandparents) will know. Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Spirited Away. Maybe Naruto or One Piece. But it has to be along those lines if you're talking about awareness in the entire population, from young to old, anime fan and anime haters. Not some otaku anime like SAO.

It's probably Pokemon or Dragon Ball in most countries, I imagine. Most likely where I live too.
One Piece is super popular among people under like 35 here too, but I don't think that many 60 year olds know it. Same goes for attack on titan. But Pokemon and Dragon Ball, everyone knows those.
I probably regret this post by now.

I guess it comes down to what people mean with 'popularity'. For me it just means people knowing that it exists and being aware of it, and that doesn't really go away once something reaches mainstream popularity. If everybody and their parents knew about it in 2005, I would assume they still know about it. Popularity as I mean it, as 'being aware something exists', doesn't really go away just because time passes. So the question is HOW popular was it back in the day? Enough for every adult to be aware of it, like it was here in europe, or was it still just something anime fans knew about?

The second way of looking at popularity is if you're only talking about people actively being a fan right now. In that case, yes, I can see a more recent show being the top pick over an oldie like DB. Probably 80% less people over the age of 40 know Attack on Titan compare to Dragon Ball where I live, but AoT definitely has a larger active, current fanbase right now than dragon ball has.
I probably regret this post by now.

Poland

Here will be from few different pov, which will include overall, new shows etc.:
According to "MAL" data which Joey recorded on with top 3 of each country in Poland it seems that the top 3 popular anime are:
1. Fmab
2. Stein's Gate
3. Gintama (idk if it is og season 1, or any other specific season)
You can see and check it here -> https://youtu.be/fePk6jIP5SU?t=1030 you need to pause and at the left side is Poland.

From news so far I found only one article which made it's own list so it is hard to tell how accurate it is, they've posted the top 10 anime so here the results:
10. Sailor Moon
9. Gto
8. One punch man
7. Pokemon
6. Death Note
5. Fmab
4. Evangelion
3. Ghost in the Shell
2. Dragon Ball
1. Naruto

Unfortunately I don't know when this article came out, so it can be the results from 5 years ago or even more.

In biggest polish site for anime with polish subs, there is no filter to search by "popularity" but there is possibility to check the top highest rated anime, here's the list:
1. Violet Evergarden the Movie (Sequel) 8.93
2. Your Name 8.85
3. Fmab 8.82
4. Demon Slayer 2 8.79
5. Silent Voice 8.78
6. Violet Evergarden 8.77
7. Steins Gate 8.74
8. Attack on Titan 3 part 2 8.73
9. Attack on Titan final season part 2 8.70
10. Demon Slayer Train/Mugen movie 8.69

So yeah in Poland none anime reached 9.00+ rating so far, they are here more strict when it comes to rating anime, if you're interested to see what anime are below the top 10 here's the full list: <- in spoiler as it is not a legal site x) and there is none official/legal site for anime in Poland, at least I've never heard of any so far.

For example the seasonals of Winter 2022 the top 5 most popular titles were (according to number of logged users who finished the whole tv show):
1. My dress up Darling
2. Arifureta 2
3. Attack on Titan
4. Strongest Sage of weakest crest
5. Genius Prince

Right now the top 5 are:
1. Shield Hero
2. I'm quiting Heroing
3. Kawaii dake
4. The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody
5. Kaguya-sama

And the different view which is by what series were most cosplayed at Pyrkon 2019 (cause of covid the next edition after 2019, will be this year at June) from what I've seen personally (the difference between 3-5 place is minor as it is by one cosplayer tbh):
1. My hero academia
2. Jojo
3. Violet Evergarden
4. Bleach
5. Naruto

Used this, since this is the best data we can have. This is the entire average across the last 18 years, don't bother with any recent stuff like AOT or Demon Slayer. It's too recent and won't be more popular than 15 yrs worth of fame.

Even if compared, AOT's or anything big that came out recent is still not close to their current peaks now either.

Here's a link if people wanna do it themselves - https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F01hryy,%2Fm%2F0k2dm,%2Fm%2F01_f03

Clicking on this link will also give you the all country data specifically. Remember to tag it appropriately - Manga/Anime and such, or else it won't be correct. It's safe to assume no other series is even close to this, so these probably are the most popular ones in most countries'.

Chose Manga tags since this tag seems to always have higher data searches than the anime by a wide margin.. guess people care about the manga more than the anime.

P.s - Stuff like Pokeamon are hard to categorise, the anime data isn't even close to the one's above. But the videogame tag, it's more I believe.

It might be the only datapoints we have, but that doesn't mean they're actually very useful or representative imo. I know for a fact that the majority of old people who know about dragonball would never ever have googled it, some of them still don't use the internet. So dragonball is the worst in the comparison but I would still bet it would poll higher than naruto or one piece if you just ask a representative amount of people from all demographics which of those they've heard of before. Because every young person still knows about dragon ball but a lot of older people won't know about naruto or One Piece still.
I probably regret this post by now.

That is the thing, for Dragon ball you might be correct. But dragon ball was also very popular in Japan only, way back then - whose population compared to the west wasn't and isn't much still.

Dragon ball came to the west during 1995 and above, so it's not that far off, in terms of western audience.

We don't know if the the Japan popularity of DB back then in Japan is enough to be more than the entire west's and asia's average of Naruto now. But yeah, speculations..

Here, probably anything tied to a game: Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh! - that was all the rage in primary school.

Excluding games, it's probably My Hero Academia as of now. I see merch for that everywhere. All the bookshops sell the manga.

When I was very young, I used to live in a different country. I'd say Doraemon was definitely the most popular and recognizable there. Ikkyu-san was very iconic too and it was still broadcast on TV years after it finished. I grew up when Naruto was still airing and that was pretty popular too. I vaguely remember Bleach being a thing as well.

probably DBZ, but there were quite a few others that were massively popular here a couple decades ago and still remain nostalgic for a lot of people, if i had to say, then the list for the major ones that might even give DBZ a fight, include:

pokemon
digimon
yu gi oh
naruto
one piece
beyblade
inuyasha (maybe)

there were a lot of other anime that aired here and are remembered fondly by fans, but i don't think there were others that were as big as the ones mentioned above.

I don't know what you're talking about, Dragon Ball wasn't just popular in Japan, it was at least as if not more popular than Naruto in a ton of western countries as well, certainly where I lived. So I don't think it has to 'make up' anything in that regard. I still think Dragon Ball is more well known in the west than Naruto right NOW, that was my point. And that internet searches only represent internet users and not the entire population so it's obviously gonna be skewed towards younger people, especially the data from earlier years. Popularity in Japan vs the west has nothing to do with what I was trying to say.

The one franchise I could see being more well known globally than DB is Pokemon because it's in a similar spot where everyone and their parents used to know about but the young people still all know about it as well. I bet my parents and most of the parents of my friends don't know about Naruto but they know about Pokemon and Dragon Ball and there's a whole generation out there like that. No such generation exists for Naruto, of people who know about naruto but don't know about Pokemon or Dragon Ball so I have a hard time imagining more people knowing about Naruto than those two.
I probably regret this post by now.

Huh? How can the west know about DB when it hadn't even aired there before 1995??? Everyone who watched it in 1995 and more were children, the only adults that knew about DB at that time can only BE from Japan, whose populations isn't high compared to a bunch of countries.

Everyone born in the 2000's - Millenials and everyone above know all about Pokemon, Db and Naruto.

Internet usage now is much more useful now than anything, since everyone's on their phone. I'm not saying anything, it might feel like all those stuff are very popular and have been the pinnacle of media, but I look at the data and it doesn't correlate.

For example, only the kids who grew up watching DB in the west would know about it, adults didn't watch it back then, in the west.

Furthermore, most of the anime is watched on the internet. But like I said, there is a chance. So I'm not disregarding your theory.

Pre COVID, People in India watched a lot of anime on TV. They just dont know that its anime. Doraemon, Shinchan, Pokemon, Beyblade, DBZ, Bakugan, Heidi and Kiteretsu are the popular ones. Then there are a few who manually look for anime and watched them. Death Note, Naruto and One piece were popular among them. We were kind of looked down and frowned upon for watching animation as they thought the content is meant for kids.

During COVID and now, most of them got exposed to the OTT platforms like Netflix and started watching anime. Theres a massive growth in the anime watching members now. Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen are popular among the newbs at the moment. People think its cool to watch anime now. Good to see times changing.

Actually no, it wasn't lol It was pokemon for a long time, then naruto and other long running shounens, and now AOT. AOT actually may have overtaken naruto right now considering Naruto has ended and in a society like india, mainstream shows aren't all that much more mainstream than other shows. This is owing to the fact that you actually have to actively be a seeker of anime to come across titles as the culture for mainstreaming these mainstream shounens is not so strong here. When you end up on the anime sites or communities, you just give into the AOT hype as that is pretty much the gateway to watching any anime titles aside from little kids' shows in India.

Ask 20 random strangers on the streets whether they are familiar with these three names: Kirito, Goku, Pikachu, do you think there's at least 7 of them knowing who Kirito is compared to Goku and Pikachu? That's how you define popularity, not by flimsy subjective definition that you just invented for the sake of saving your own ass on a cartoon forum.
