How do you guys rate a series?
How do you rank that series above another?

By the series as a whole or By the peak/one particular season?

For me, I rate by the peak of the anime, not the series as a whole.

For example, I do like my Oregairu, S2 was one of my favourite anime ever. I do think that S1 of Oregairu wasn't great, but I do rate Oregairu higher solely because of S2.

Another example, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun.
Railgun S1 was decent, wasn't anything special. S2 was good, but wasn't anything exceptional.
Railgun S3 was so enjoyable, just solely because of this season, it ranked higher in my list than other consistently good anime.

If you make an average score for all the series I watched, the ranking is very off.
Hibike Euphonium in my list would get a 9.0 average, while Oregairu would get a 7.7 average
But I do rate Oregairu higher than Hibike Euphonium solely because of that one particular season

Peak/One particular season (your vote)
I rate this way because if the first season of some anime is good, then it doesn't mean that other season will also be good or it could be possible that the 2nd is better than the 1st season.

One particular season.
Just because there are different entries for each season. If it wasn't on MAL, then I'd probably rate it as a whole.

Wait what.. You know what you are talking right??
We all rate different season of each anime differently according to our own experience... So what do you mean my peak... ??
What if whole season is boring but a particular seen from that season is a banger for you... ..what will you do in that situation???
Haven't found a good anime dialogue to copy yet!!

Any series I watch, I typically rate by that individual season. For reviews, I'll usually combine seasons or films to provide my thoughts on the series as a whole depending on what I have available for it.

The series as a whole, obviously. Unless there's multiple seasons with seperate entries, then they get individual scores based on their respective quality. But I would definitely never rate based on 'peak' and just ignore the rest of the show, no matter if it's multiple seasons or all in one entry. That doesn't make sense to me at all.

OP also forgot to include the option of rating a show based on it's worst/lowest point. I feel like that's what a LOT of people do, especially if the 'bad' part was towards the end of the story.
I probably regret this post by now.

Definitely by peak or rating each season. Some series like Initial D or Attack on Titan have more than 1 studio animating different seasons so the quality can vary. Theres also shows like Promised Neverland that started out really good then went downhill. Then although rarely theres a series like JoJo which has a unique style for each part.

Different entries can have different scores even if they're from the same franchise, obviously.

If we talk about single MAL entries, it depends on how high is the peak and how low is the bottom. In general, I'd say that peaks are fairly important.

If a show is incomplete, then its rating would be the average of the individual seasons.

If a show is complete, then the final season's rating is ALSO the rating of the series.

Incidentally, I treat Jojo as a bunch of seasons rather than one series when it comes to rating it.

AoT I = 9
AoT II = 8
AoT III part 1 = 7 You can clearly see the rating is dropping over time, BUT...
AoT III part 2 = 10 And it's part of my 10 favorites.
AoT IV part 1 = 9
AoT IV part 2 = work in progress, I'm waiting for it to finish airing which is tomorrow apparently *hype*
Kingdom Come Deliverance II GOTY 2025

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is another worthy GOTY contender I tip my fedora to Sandfall Interactive, excellent debut gentlemen!

It's harder to create separation if I rate by peak season. Plus it'd feel less justified if I find the series decent for the most part and had one great season yet put it higher than something that has never reached that high, but keeping it at a good enough level.

Instead I go by weighted average using the duration of each "season" (as movies would also count) as a way to create scores and then judge entire series by factoring each individual weighted score of the seasons. There are two kinds I track separately, one is factoring all entries and the other is factoring what is considered canon. I also add a little weight to volume of episodes because if I'm enjoying a long running show and it kept itself close within another show that isn't as long, it's more impressive on the long running show to keep the quality.

Pretty much the same here, but it's how anime is being aired/streamed in Japan over the years and full adaptation/series in term of production quality, can be rushed.

I always try to rate the series as a whole, not separately.

When you're going to recommend an anime, you will probably say "watch Shingeki no Kyojin" and not "Watch Shingeki no Kyojin season 3 part 2"
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.
