and how much priority do you give to one point of criteria than the other and do you base it like enjoyment = these many, animation= these many points or how?

- Enjoyment comes first
Rating by enjoyment doesn't mean lack of rationality. It means giving different weights to different aspects, case by case. The sound in a music anime, the hilarity in a comedy, the atmosphere in a slice of life, the story and the pacing in a plot-driven anime: they all affect enjoyment differently. When enjoyment is at the lowest, I won't give a higher score just because a secondary aspect is somewhat decent. I'm not trying to be objective.

- My rating system
7-10) I like it and love it
6) I like it, but I don't love it
5) watchable, I would never drop
1-4) I dislike it

since there was a topic like this a week ago:

· Story and script: 5
I care about the story, but I've seen so many that everything feels like the same plot points shuffled and recycled endlessly. I will always appreciate great writing, but if I were to rate anime based on it, I'd have given 3/10 to most I've seen. as long as there aren't any logical fallacies I'm fine.
· Beginning: 4
I wanted to say this one is important to me, because a boring start fails to grab my attention. however I always watch 4 episodes before dropping a show. it's a habit I picked up because of lightnovel adaptations. the 4th episode is usually where the first arc ends so it gives you a good idea what to expect in the future.
· The end: 8
this is where most anime fails me. I'm willing to put up with a lot, thinking the end will justify the means. too bad most anime never heard of closure.
· Characters: 6
most characters don't resonate with me, they're just archetypes and stop there with nothing else going on for them. I don't ever selfinsert, and blank main characters are garbage tier. I feel the same way about characters as the story, I would've stopped watching anime a decade ago if I were looking for great characters. they should be likeable at least though.
· Direction (shots, tone, pacing): 6
unlike the beginning, this one can be felt all throughout the runtime. I didn't want to give this one much importance, but then I remembered the Jo-ha-kyū "beginning, break, rapid" story structure which I just can't deal with. plus I enjoy interesting shots which is why anno's directing is appealing to me.
· Art (color, drawing, style): 7
art is very important to me, I'm a visual person. I want things to look cool, hot and interesting. the reason I never picked up sao is because it looks bland as hell. it's so plain it hurts. probably fits the generic mmo theme but I can't be assed to stare at that for 5 minutes.
· Animation: 8
no1. reason I puke all over the screen. I'd read manga or books if I didn't want to see things move. yet most anime are barely acceptable quantity over quality stuff nowadays. I know it's an immense workload, I know it's a hard job. have some dignity and pride in your work. I watch anime because amazing animators exist.
· Sound (ost, seiyuus, op/ed): 3
it's there. I don't care. the VAs do a decent enough job in almost all cases that it's not distracting. same with soundtracks, it's rare to hear something interesting that sticks with me. eds are 99% slow and put me to sleep. current year ops are disgusting. I hope anime will grow out of this pop-club-rap period soon with the wohoos and yeaaaahs.
· Enjoyment: 6
I'm fully capable of watching things that weren't aimed at me. personal enjoyment isn't that important for me, I don't expect to be pandered to. though for a 9/10 and 10/10 show it's an absolute must in my book. I can't just call anything a favorite.

the points might be off but I hope the explanation makes sense.

Here’s my criteria:

Is it an episodic anime?
If not, is it written REALLY well?
If the question of either one of those is a “yes” then it has the potential for a 10, for anything below it doesn’t matter

It's all about enjoyment. How much did I enjoy the story, how much did I enjoy the characters, the visuals and so on. Music and Voice Acting are the least important to me and I don't care if they are bad. Just copy-pasting from my profile:

Gonna be honest, I don't have a set list of criteria I judge each anime by.
Although, I try to blend my enjoyment along with more objective things like pacing, character development, story progression, consistent animation, etc into my scores.

For instance, if I really loved an anime, but it had some blaring issues, I probably wouldn't give it a perfect score.

mm seems like a solid criteria, btw do you care if the plot is predictable or having any cliches or anything like that eg: cliche story, or relying on cliche tropes eg:o like you enjoyed an anime and characters story animation and everything but the story was very cliche ad so were the tropes

I give the show one overall score, there wouldn't be any reason to break that down into criteria unless I was writing a review for everyone to see.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

Almost everyone rates according to their enjoyment. The source of that enjoyment differs from person to person, though. Some people just want to be entertained through simple action while others enjoy complex plots. But at the end of the day, enjoyment is the criteria.

My enjoyment comes from good story, characters, dialogue, consistent plot, etc.

Good OSTs, voice acting and animation are welcome too. Especially OSTs and voice acting. I don't care much about animation unless it is downright horrible.

And lastly, it also depends upon how it stands up to other shows from the same genre. This is one factor that doesn't involve enjoyment.

My ratings are my opinion about the show on how good or bad it was. I just sum all the bad and good parts of an anime and rate it.
I don't like to use 10/10 score because there is no true masterpiece.

Plot ~ Character writing (which takes precedence depends on whether it's a more plot or character-driven work) > Theme exploration >> Direction > Art >> Voice Acting >> Music/Animation

Enjoyment plays no part as that only determines how much I liked a work and how much it appealed to my biases rather than how good it is by its own merits, as well as being vague at best and impossible at worst to quantify.

I mainly rate based on enjoyment, although sometimes I also substract or add points depending on what my objective rating says (e.g. some anime I gave a 9 because I enjoyed it a lot, but in its composition it doesn't deserve a 9... better an 8).

Just enjoyment and how much i'd want to watch it again. I don't really use a scale or anything, i just rate in the moment.

I do use one for Hentai though. I give a score out of 5 for how good it is as a story (IE: Is it unique, is there a coherent plot at all) and how good it is as pornography

I think you missunderstand. I mean the elements everyone else is mentioning, I don't care much about them individually. The important part is how they work together and each anime also has different needs from them. For exemple the story can be super important in some series but nearly irrelevant in another.

I've been making it up as I go along, to some extent.

but right now

10 - Masterpiece & personal favorite, hold off giving these out at all costs
9 - the rating I will usually give to an anime I truly love
8 - an anime that falls short in one or two hard to ignore aspects but it's still quite good, or it's a really good anime that I don't feel strongly about.
7 - I don't consider this anime a waste of my time, but it's not exceptional
6 - this was okay I guess
5 - this wasted my time/I wouldn't have completed this under normal circumstances
4 - man this shit sucks
3-1 - haven't had cause to use those ratings yet. I would like to be able to use the full spectrum, but I really feel like even the worst shit that I've seen has some merit. I can find things to like. 3 and below I feel like I would have to start watching flaming garbage to use those ratings. or I guess I could start grading on a curve. but I don't really have enough Completed Entries yet to do anything fancy. maybe beginning of next year.

I go with the flow and like to see how much anime avoids the general anime tropes in a show so if its filled with it and i enjoyed it to the fullest its 6/10 but if i didn't enjoy it but still thinks it was not a time waste its 5/10.

But now if shows are totally taking the anime tropes and still failing to get in the enjoyment sector then its 2-4/10 for me.

Now shows which are unique or are totally absurd to begin with good stories get 7-8/10

9/10 or 10/10 are for shows for which i am biased.

Enjoyment was my top criteria but it was like 5-6 years ago now i look for some uniqueness as i watched too much of anime now most things don't surprise me so yeah.
2025 might be the year where I will be happy. This year is not happy year.

First, the writing, story and characters. For me, good writing is automatically enjoyable unless its themes are really obscure.

Second, its technical aspects like animation, OSTs, atmosphere and directing. Tho this one is not as important as the first.

Based on this, shows that I consider average would be rated a 3.
7-10 means very good.
5-6 means good.
4 means fine or above average.
2 means bad.
1 means very bad.
1-2 are ones I dislike but not hate since I have found myself unable to hate anime mostly coz for me to hate it, it would have to emotionally resonate first.

I rate on enjoyment, but that doesn't mean I just assign a number based on a vague feeling at the end. Throughout the show, there are numerous elements that I know through experience that I like or dislike. Like if a shounen character says something conventional or stupid, the rating goes down by 0.1 in my head. Or if there's a genuinely funny joke, the rating goes up by 0.1. And so on... And at the end, I take that tallied rating and compare it to the other shows in the same rating bracket to see if it fits. It usually does. If I'm not lazy (which I usually am these days), I then make fine adjustments. Like if this show is 6.5, and I have another 6.5 and 6.4, then I make a determination which ones are better. If the new show is in between the other two, but better rather than worse, than I assign it for example 6.47.

Honestly, the whole story/characters/animation/sound thing needs to die. It just breeds vagueness. There's a lot more nuance and detail to all of these things, and they are all weighted differently. MAL just groups everything that people don't conceive to fit neatly within one of these categories as "enjoyment", as if it's its own separate thing. It's not. All these factors in the anime causes enjoyment.

I can't enjoy anime that isn't caused by something within the anime.

enjoyment. everything else like design or character development comes as a result of my enjoyment as there might be shows that have immaculate character development through psychological hints etc but if that doesn't make me enjoy the show its all for nothing fr fr
