I've noticed that more are getting into anime, so it's starting to become more "normal".

It's not popular in Poland, except some kids anime like Pokemon and Dragon Ball. But people below 30 usually heard about anime. So it becomes more popular and more acceptable to watch it.

In the USA it probably is, but I'm probably not qualified to say if it is or not because I'm not a very social person.

Yes for the most part, older folks probably still think it's just cartoons only meant for kids though.

it's not common, but many from the younger generation have started watching anime, only really niche circles do that though..
in my country, as long as you don't stand out no one cares what you do, i guess. i'm not ashamed of saying i watch anime so means something

Depends on where you are. There is a considerable amount of people that think of anime as cartoons from the devil that will corrupt their children (one TV channel in 2021 made a whole "documentary" on Death Note having dark symbolism and about this one girl who bought a personalized notebook and wrote her own name in it lol), but overall, most people are aware of anime getting popular and they don't mind much, although many still see it as a childish thing.

There are still people who think anime is a cartoon in Turkey, but in general, most of the people have adapted to this culture.

Let's say nobody knew what anime was in the US when I first got into it as a 10-year-old in 1994.

Anime is widely considered as children's cartoons in India but it's becoming more loved these days. The pandemic introduced me and a lot of my friends to anime so we can hope that grown-ups watching anime may become a "normal" thing in the future.

Well, I would hope the world is developed enough for it to not be some kind of outcast material. Good anime getting overshadowed by some myths like damn.

I'd assume so at this point. But if you knew me, you'd know I've never cared about what's "socially acceptable". I've always thought it was dumb to say older people aren't allowed to watch or read certain things deemed "childish" Hell, I personally think the older you are, the more choice you should have over what you watch. Age restrictions are literally made for children, to keep them from seeing certain things. Older Teens and Adults should have free range on that shit.

Ive started to see a lot of people getting into anime in india these days especially because of lockdown boredom, just like me. Kids do watch pokemon and other classics not realizing its anime, and most of the adults still consider it as cartoon stuff and only for little kids

Not really. I think it's getting more popular, but I don't think it will ever be "normal" per se.

This ground is soiled by those before me and their lies. I dare not look up for on me I feel their eyes

Several years ago back when I was in Highschool (I live in America) I don't think you'd get bullied for watching it but it was for sure seen as dorky. The only kids I saw openly talk about anime were about half the kids who took Japanese class, so I'd say about 5% of students were open about watching anime (most students took Spanish and French). And none of them were seen as cool kids that's for sure lol.

However it's my understanding that a majority of Highschool students now watch anime (maybe not a lot, but at least the occasional popular show). It's honestly kind of ludicrous how quickly things changed. I'd imagine it's almost entirely because of Netflix sticking anime on their front page all the time (which many people eventually check out at some point and then get hooked on) and because of the occasional breakout show like My Hero Academia, Attack On Titan, Demon Slayer, One Punch Man, Sword Art Online, Dragonball Super, Boruto, Etc.

Definitely, anime fans are growing very quickly in the past 5 years, there's at least 1/3 people watches Demon Slayer in our school. It's getting "normier" in the past few years, well not that I complain

It wasn't always like that tho, back when I was in primary school, no one watches anime, and you probably would have been made fun of by others if you watch anime

I don't see why not. Anime is pretty big in America; I think most people I know have at least one anime they like.

Anime is quite popular in my country, to the point that some russian anime memes become part of youth slang. But, unfortunately, anime is still considered a somewhat weird hobby and you can easily fall victim to mocking just because you love it.

For example, there is a popular joke in Russian Internet culture that the opinion of people with anime on a userpic shouldn't taken into account, or that anime fascination is a sign of latent homosexuality and love for dressing up in clothes of the opposite sex. Therefore, many normies would rather tell you that they love some good anime than call themselves anime fans.

In past no, it wasn't acceptable and it was even alot of times a reason to get beaten up, can't tell from when but it became more acceptable and you can already see alot of people in public just simply speaking about anime or wearing anime merch, which would be a miracle to see around 6+ years ago. Even in internet is a very popular meme where you put into anime girls polish beers, I don't know why it exist, it is just a trend x), here's examples:

If you will write "Anime Piwo"/"Anime Harnaś" you will find tens or even hundreds of those edits, for those who are unaware Piwo means Beer in polish and Harnaś is one of the branch for beers (which tastes bad but is cheap btw x) )

In polish internet forums + memes site this "joke" also exist and sometimes it is not a joke but a real rule for some users x)

(South Africa) Most of us grew up watching anime, so it's a pretty normal thing to be into here. However it's more popular among kids and teens I guess. People from my generation who grew up with anime constantly on the tv though, seemed to have carried their love for it into adulthood as well (like me), and the current popularity of anime among the kids and teens seem to only be increasing, which is nice to see.

I'm sure my take isn't very unique since I'm American but out here yeah, pretty much. You'll hardly run into someone who will genuinely chastize you for watching anime. so I'd say its fairly socially acceptable

@Zettaiken Well, in my experience most of the time this is used as a loophole to attack people with an uncomfortable opinion or argument. If you're not an anime fan, then they're just attacking something else on your page, which is at least a little controversial. Or even make it up lol.

Back in the day this shit would happen to some people

Though from my experience, ppl would make fun of you, you get bullied, no one talks to you, or ppl see you as a weirdo

Or "acceptable animes" like the big 3 shounens, DBZ, pokemon would only be ok, everything else like NGE, Elfen Lied, Gundam was seen as weird, dorky etc

This was around my early twenties I heard of these stories. I got DBZ shirts in the mid-90s during trips to Japan and The Philippines. My classmates couldn't make heads or tails of what I was wearing, but it was nothing complimentary and nothing malicious. Just the simple, "what's that you're wearing because I haven't seen that before." I just told them it's something I bought overseas and they're like "okay."

And whenever I visit my hometown in AZ, I am very surprised with how much African American youth is into anime because the African American population was risen since I graduated and left (I only had about 3 black students at my junior high and only remember like four or five in high school, and my high school had 3000 students)

Yuppers. Being a fan was social suicide back in the day though. Interesting how the perception on anime has changed and it's now a mainstream thing

i dont think its something people usually speak up about liking unless they're below 20... and unless they know they're within a safe nerd-enviroment or just doesnt care about their surroundings... but it seems more accepted with the young, but not like... a lot... i think its still branded as the... not popular kids thing to say it nicely

It has been normalized in the 90s. Pretty chill, because it makes a lot of anime more accessible. Like local TV stations have free apps and they have the right to show anime they licensed with dubs and subs.

Anime is pretty popular in the USA. Not to the point that everyone watches it, but most people know what it is at least. So many people are into it these days compared to the early 2010s and earlier.

So the answer to your queston is yes, it is socially acceptable.

Pretty much.
We've had a lot of big anime conventions for years, and it's "common knowledge" that some anime (and western cartoons) are for kids while some aren't.
That being said, anime has definitely grown to become more "public" nowadays. They've even started bringing anime movies to the cinema. Even people who aren't that into anime have watched some shows on Netflix.
So, watching anime isn't considered as weird nor is it uncommon.

I'd say yes from my perspective. In the've seen thousands of people walking around my (and other) areas of my country wearing anime-themed t-shirts (mostly of naruto and DBZ) I think there' are also a few conventions that were held before. (tho I've attended none so far) I'm probably missing a few things but I don't know the full extent of my country's relationship with anime

From my school-wise experience (more so, in high school), I've engaged in a few anime discussions with friends and peers alike and I've also overheard a few conversations in my classes discussing anime.

I think they are still treated the same way as cartoons over here.

We've had easy access to anime since the 70's, so a large amount of people grew up watching anime and still do to this day but, for that same reason, it's seen as something you enjoy during your youth and then slowly grow out of...and a lot of people do.

So yeah, we have a lot of casual fans and you can have hour long conversations about different anime with people who are not otaku but did see a lot of it during their childhood and teen years.
Actual weebs are normally the butt of jokes among their friends, but that's about it, I guess.
