Old school anime, amiright? Even if they look the same, it doesn't affect the story.

I don't really think they look the same... it's just the author's style.

And their thoughts had never occured that different art designers have different styles than others, thus actually, make some series in anime look quite different than others?

Overgeneralization from the general population had never ceased to amaze me. But perhaps I'm overgeneralizing that the general population are the ones always making the overgeneralizations, when actually, it's just the little minorities that have nothing to do except complain about some niche media being looked the same. Hmmm.

There is one key difference in US vs Japanese styles: Caricature.

Psychologically, our minds determine facial features in ways different than cameras. When looking at a face, certain parts of the face stand out more than others. For example, you can draw President Bush in so many different ways; but yet, you'll be able to identify them as caricatures of Bush just by looking at them.

Apparently, to Americans, the lips and nose tend to stand out. In a sense, I tend to notice that when I look at a white person.

To Asians, we see the eyes and small lips. It's kinda ironic considering that we Asians are quite squinty. XD

Anyways, just look at a bunch of characters, and y'generally see these trends. Naturally, with every trend, there is variation.

Disney's princesses and Ariel's sisters do look really similar. But the thing is, some artists just can't draw characters who look unique (meaning, not looking like twins etc), esp for the shoujo genre where most girls and guys look very much like copies of one another.

look's like you're comparing, western animation to comics and manga..

not eastern animation vs western animation vs comics vs manga..

ariel and her sisters is a bad situation to compare them, for the simple fact you're discussing genealogy before your talking about animation styles, like in real life it depends on the gene that is more dominate to how the child can turn out...

you can throw generational time gaps.. you could throw 10+ generations back in the family tree..

Thing is, whether we like it or not, the human face has limitations on appearance.

There's only so many ways to draw a face. If enough people attempt to draw a face, it's ordinary they eventually all look similar.

Keep in mind, manga/comics, anime/cartoons are drawn by people that have perfected a 'look' they like to draw, and don't do portrait art.
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

depends on the style of the creator. it is expected that characters have same characteristics because they are just made by the same animator. well if they are not lazy they can create a very unique one.

This is why they think all anime looks the same.

My dear friends, I can answer you as one who was with them only 2 years ago. You are almost right, most (but not everyone) of them really think so because of animation is as in school anime. The second point is mimicry, I mean it couldn't be so bad if the characters had just huge eyes, or mouth, or something else :) -- style is intertwining with mimicry and emotions. For an unprepared person it looks like "Damn, what are these big-headed and extremely emotional disgusting motherfuckers?". Even now I think that they are right in saying that... for the most of anime.

And the last: to be critical, many animes that even I consider to be great have many characters that are very similar in this context (not in the meaning of their inner selves or behaviours).

While there are artists without much range I doubt that is the case for Disney.
Disney artists are pro. They're pro because Disney is rich enough to afford them.

It's not so much artists are limited in ability so much as they do "what works".
There's a reason why "big eyes is good" and "small eyes is bad". It works.

The problem is artists can get a bit TOO formulaic with their style
and since much of art is inspired it leads to more anime looking the same.
It's not they CAN'T make new designs but more that they already
perfected the designs they do use and it's easier to use a template
that has already been proven to work.

What a necro.

The thing is, each artist tends to stick with a certain style. Just like musicians tend to make sort of similar music that they have made in the past, or authors that tend to write for example fantasy stories. Also, I wish people would understand that their stupid realizations are usually not worth discussing. The cat has been out of the bag before they were even born.
