What stops you from showing your real face and name in this site?

I'm curious to know the reasons that lead people not to want to reveal their real appearance and name in this site, especially those who don't just use it to list the anime and manga that they watched and read, but also use the forum as a means to spread information.
Wouldn't revealing your appearance and name perhaps add more credibility to your words? What do you risk losing by doing it?
I'm considering the possibility of showing a real picture of mine as my profile picture, which shouldn't be a problem, since the things that I defend in this site are the same ones I defend in sites in which I show pictures of myself, like Facebook and Goodreads, and then it would be easier for me to link my writings that I publish with my real name, but I'm always hesitating to reveal my identity, and end up not doing it, though I don't know exactly why. It feels almost like some kind of taboo that can't be broken for some mysterious reason, perhaps because almost everyone else is only using drawings of anime/manga/light novel characters as their avatar or profile picture, so if I use a picture of myself it will look out of place.
Another possibility that I thought about is that hiding the identity gives people more freedom to write certain things without the risk of being held legally responsible for them. Is that it?
Is there any special reason for you not to want to reveal your appearance and name in this specific site, or do you simply not do it anywhere on the internet?

for me it's because i'm not so confident in my looks so i don't like to show my face but if someone asks for my name i would say it because i don't have to hide something just don't want to let people i don't know to see my face^^

for others idk why they hide their identity maybe because they feel safer when they write something "offensive" but idk

My reason is that don’t want people I know in real life to find out that I have allocated 90 days of my life to anime.

if you have a high post count there will be some nonsense and embarassment buried there. maybe someone who dislikes you in real life could go through it and dig it out. stuff that you wrote in a careless manner because you were writing under pseudonym on an anime board.

Ah, yeah, of course, there are some exceptions. I've seen one of your pictures.

I'm not ashamed to let anyone know I watch anime nor am I afraid to put a face behind the things I say...For the most part. I'm extremely vocal when I'm out in public with friends. In fact I've likely said much worse stuff (at least as far as jokes go) in public than I've said on here. It just boils down to it not feeling necessary for me to show my face on a site like this.

The lack of interest from others + the preference to keep it private (not secret)

I've seen quite a few people use their actual picture (or what I think portrays them) as their profile picture and in my mind, it's perfectly the decision of every user whether they want a picture of themselves or not
I'd just advise against choosing pictures that would go against common decency, as in not posting pictures for which you're in underwear or naked, even when the private parts are not in the frame
For the sake of decency: stay normally clothed like how you would be when you go outside to the city when you aren't looking for attention + when it isn't hot and not how you would be when you go to the beach on a hot, sunny day or how you would be if you wanted to impress other people with your figure and you can avoid a lot of possible backlash that way

Anime/manga is full of fanservice schoolgirl anime. I rather it not be seen by my potential employers given how cancel culture and censorship are nowadays. I avoid social media for the same reason. You never want to make yourself hard to hire due to your online persona.

My name is revealed in my profile which everyone can enter and read it, my appearance so far I haven't revealed how I look like, not because I don't want or anything like that, there was no reason to show my face in different forum threads, if someone really want to see my face for me it isn't a problem to take a selfie with my profile on background so you will know that it is 100% legit photo x)

I don't show my face or name because

1) It's a stupid thing to do for me personally because over the years there are people on the internet who know me and dislike me enough to try and ruin my life if they found my name, linked it to this account and scoured through my posts for any personal details given out, which I'm sure I have here and there. I have only this account name for this profile for a reason, I want to escape other places.

2) Nobody I know of is curious enough to want to see me in real life, and I'm not so overconfident as to post it without anybody asking for it in the first place. I don't judge, but from past experiences, people have probably viewed me as arrogant because I would often post my picture as an introduction when I didn't need to.

3) I have put a picture of myself out before, linked to a video game. Experiences were positive at first, then declined as people would constantly bring the pictures up. People would use my image as leverage to try and force others to show themselves, because I had no reason to hide myself didn't mean others had to. It usually ends in me leaving the communities I'm in, I've never fared well in the same community if I put my picture or name in it.

For a somewhat social outcast, putting my image out there only when I was 16-17 was a huge confidence boost when it was well received. But when you make enemies online, it's not such a good thing. The internet is a big place, people all around the world can do many things to your image. There's a reason why most of my social media is private or seldom ever used. I don't really act any different from how I do in real life (I hope) so there's that.

No credibility is won is you know that you are talking to an expert; their so-called expertise does not make them magically right. I will refrain from quoting names, but that really upsets me when I hear people who study a field and are completely ignorant about the basic philosophical, ethical or more trivially aesthetic questions about it.

Because social engineering exists, so you should never ever reveal on public internet location any more personal information than what was is strictly needed; as in, if you reveal enough so that AI can connect your internet account to your real identity (pictures of yourself is definitely a case like this), then you screwed up already.
Remember, even if you delete an info after a while, there will be way to recover it, so it's too late to regret afterwards.
It's less about you personally and more about you could open a window into your company 's security system by being targetted that way, as it's pretty common nowadays.
I guess children may not understand that, but once you'll be working for a company, you'll understand what it means.

Yes, but then again, even a video chat could be kinda not giving enough authentic impression compared to an actual meetup

More than just curiosity? Are you referring to the process of asking for a picture of a person to know if he or she is pretty enough to date and have a romantic relationship with in real life?
Yeah, especially if the video chat was made with the two wearing masks, but I think just seeing a simple unedited picture of someone is enough if the purpose is just to know how the person you are talking to looks like, which is far from being as informative as the experience of having direct contact with the person in real life, but at least it's something, instead of the two ending up having very long discussions through the internet for a lot of time without ever having any idea of each other's appearance, and then one day one of the two finds out what is the appearance of the other and ends up regretting the time spent in the conversations.
Of course, this depends on how much each person cares for appearances; Some people may not care enough in comparison to how much they care for the content of the conversations that they had independently of the other's appearance, but to be honest I don't think this is very normal, as our appearances are part of our humanity, so it doesn't seem right to think that all what matters about another person is just what is being shown through texts, and it's more human-like to talk to people while taking their looks into consideration, which doesn't mean to say that what has been written will lose its value if the person who wrote it happens to be very ugly, but my point is just that when two persons talk to each other, although they are using texts as the means of communication, it's important to keep in mind that they are not talking to the texts that they are seeing on their screens, but to the person who wrote the texts.
In dating apps some people warn beforehand that they only talk to people who show their faces before trying to start a conversation, and I think it makes sense.

There are a lot of good reasons to not show yourself online.
Anonymity - sometimes this is an escape from real life and people express themselves anonymously online. Privacy - Facial recognition and the fact that dodgy people exist online means people may be able to identify you by face alone, so not showing your face removes the possibility of tracing, plus people may not want to be associated directly with the anime they watch.
Aesthetic - A lot of people don't like the way they look, and prefer to have an anime character as their online persona. Sometimes it just fits with the aesthetic of their profile also, whereas unless you have good experience in photoshop, using your face does not have much flexibility in terms of aesthetic.

I'm referring to asking for sharing pictures so that people can recognize each other when they meet up. It's not restricted to romantic relationships, but the motivation is usually the highest there

The thing is, there are lots of things that can willingly and unwillingly alter the impression that it just doesn't do the actual expression justice. Like it's rather difficult to discern unaltered images. Or when someone is simply not photogenic or has poor camera settings and/or quality

my point is just that when two persons talk to each other, although they are using texts as the means of communication, it's important to keep in mind that they are not talking to the texts that they are seeing on their screens, but to the person who wrote the texts.
Fair point, but if you want that, you're better off going to Facebook or Twitter

why is there a need to show my real face and name? it's unnecessary.

anyone who knows me can find me by this name. it's just an alias.
no more then does real faces. reveal your true nature.

names are just words in the end. they don't define your exact nature and a face does not match to a persons inner nature.

people can have other reasons as well.
to protect themselves.
to protect there families.
or they just don't feel like it.

Showing your face and real name is a sign that you're willing to take full responsibility for the things that you write, without making it seem like you're just having the courage to write certain things because you're hiding your true identity behind an alias.

On the other hand I also feel like great part of the reason that leads people to show a real picture of themselves on the internet is just vanity.

1. Doxing. No thanks. I literally have a child, so protecting my personal information from random strangers on the internet is important to me.

2. I don't need to reveal myself. People don't know me from a hole in the wall. Therefore, I fail to see how knowing what I look like and my real name would make my opinions on an anime internet forum more or less valid.

3. Honestly, who knows who uses this site at the end of the day. I like being able to comfortably and anonymously voice my thoughts and opinions with out worrying about someone from work noticing - because honestly the staff at my job might as well be walking around with the word "weeb" written across their foreheads. I would not be the least bit surprised if my co-workers frequented MAL.
