See topic title. I know that not a lot of people on MAL care for isekai (myself included). I'm curious about giving people a chance to air their woes about the genre.

That's a good question.

By default, I generally avoid seinen anime, and most isekai are seinen. Some are shounen, but they don't look any more interesting. I also avoid harem anime, and some isekai happen to have harems in them, so they'll also be avoided.

Another thing, is that I usually detest the artstyle and character designs of most isekai anime. The funny thing, is that I love fantasy settings, but isekai fantasy anime look annoying to me.

I think that's the best way that I can explain it, lol.

It is always the same thing, same characters, same generic fantasy world, same generic character design, same generic harem.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

Isekai is just Fantasy that relies on a dumb gimmick and video game logic instead of world building at this point.

People that hate Isekai is easy to see just in the few once that have already comment.

They have watched 2-3 Isekai shows and know they think they know it all and seen ti all.

I watch Shield Hero so and I didn't like it, so everything else sucks.
It's damn nice logic you guys are using, making me laugh my ass of. Hiow simple minded you guys truly are.

I hate that most of it isn't anymore on a level of let's say, 12 Kingdoms, Inuyasha, Digimon season 1-4 or Spirited Away or western portal fantasy like Narnia or Harry Potter. I would love isekai, if we get more series like these again.
But I enjoyed the bookworm anime tho.

Nowadays a lot of character designs and personalities are just copy cats from each other... if you want to call them actual characters.
Even the fantasy worlds are so dull and boring. There is no soul and no own thoughts in most of them.

I am a person who loves fantasy and in my eyes Isekai, unfortunately, is something that spits on this genre. No world building, always the same patterns, simplifying everything you can. Most of the Isekai I've watched are just titles that are the author's wet dream and have nothing to offer. I would like to something similar to Witcher universe and not the titles patterned on the C-class RPG games

I personally don't dislike it. (prolly cause I haven't seen too much)

But I think I can understand why some people hate it. After watching alot of it, it's pretty much just stays the same. Most isekai are repetitive and moderate. But it's entertaining, so it receives alot of popularity. Which I guess why people find it annoying. People praise anime that don't have high quality, just popularity.

Lack of creativity, they all look like the same anime. No world building, generic protagonist... And, since almost all of them are a LN adaptation, the anime never show the real story ending. Unless it receives more seasons, which is rare

As an ex-isekai hater I would say that most isekai are a copy of each other.

Basic Isekai formula: Character has a trash life - Go's to the streets and gets hit by truck - kun, gets transported into a different world - mc lives in a shack near a small town - at first mc is lonely but then starts to make friend - then mc has to beat a villain - beats the villain and either gets send to back to the real world and everyone is sad but happy about the memories they made - or they live happily ever after in the isekai world

Once you've seen 1 isekai, they're all basically the same with few exceptions so majority of the time it's unoriginal and it's predictable and it's just an overused concept in general. It's hard to get interested in something you've seen so many times....if there was some isekai that were truly so different like nothing before ever made then it would be worth it. Look at anime like gantz it's completely unlike anything ever made and it's a great isekai. Re:zero while it's not completely original, there wasn't any other isekai like it although the whole time loop thing is kinda overused already. I always find myself asking the question why do you need isekai to send a character into another world when you can just have the character be apart of that world from the beginning like it's completely unnecessary just to send them into the world from another world and it's usually always like the most unoriginal ways they end up in these other worlds.

I don't hate it really, but I dont really like it either. Especially ones with generic characters, fanservice, harems and chicks with huge breasts. I don't want to see those ones. However, the concept is interesting, I enjoyed the first season of log horizon, and I like ascendance of a bookworm. I haven't really liked many others because they don't really interest me at all. I just get bored and over think the logic of it all. Then if it throws in some fanservice it completely loses me. Normally the comedy isn't my sort of thing either, especially if it's any sort of sexual comedy.

Related but not:

I'm sick of shows over sexualizing characters. (I'm a female who is just grossed out by the idea of people valuing others based on that kind of stuff, maybe because I'm pretty sure I'm asexual, so I just don't get it). Especially if the characters are lolicon or shotocon, but that goes for any genre. That's not to say that I judge others who watch it, if it makes them happy and they aren't hurting anyone then that's fine, it's wonderful when you find things that you love.

It just personally throws me off and makes me feel kind of upset about stuff.

Anyways that's just a bit of context for why the harem, loli, fanservice stuff that is often present puts me off. I'm willing to try ones that don't contain that kind of thing, but they are hard to find when the industry is so saturated with that kind, because well, sex sells.

I don't inherently hate it. There is a ton of potential for great anime/manga to be made with isekai. Problem is that 99% of isekais are the single most uninspired thing to have ever been made. It always has to be an unpopular generic dude gets isekaid and becomes OP in a fantasy world and gathers a harem. It's always the same story beats pretty much every single time. Even the isekais people claim to be the good ones like Shield Hero, Overlord and Slime all follow this pattern too. OP MC, harem and fantasy setting. Which is why I and many others simply roll their eyes and sigh when you hear that yet another isekai is coming. Despite the genre itself having limitless potential.

What's worse is that the genre has so quickly gotten so stale, that as soon as someone does something even slightly different, it immediately gets overhyped as an isekai unlike any we've ever seen before. Which is ironically what I saw when Slime came out. People claimed how it was so different because the MC was a Slime. Despite like previously mentioned, it follows an ungodly amount of generic isekai tropes that we've seen a million times before.

The biggest reason I hate the Isekai genre right now is because of all it's wasted potential, I don't hate the idea at all. Being reborn or transported into a new world should be one of the most fascinating genres out there, what kind of world you make is only limited by your creativity. You could make any world with any kind of culture and have that play off of the main character and his own culture from the real world, make things as logical or nonsensical as possible, you could do so much with that basic premise. Instead, we get medieval MMO world #3985 with the exact same mechanics and world building, but with different proper pronouns.

That's why I don't like Isekai. All the Isekai I shit on would probably get a lot less flak from me personally if there were actual Isekai out there that impressed me and actually came close to reaching the genre's potential. Seeing another Isekai that's basically rehashing every single Isekai trope is a reminder of what could have been, so I get more salty than I should be. I have so many other issues with the genre, but things like most of them being bland power fantasies bugs me a lot less than the missed potential.

The constant one upping and cookie cutter plots is why I just cringe at a lot of isekai these days, most of the good isekai have either been adapted or studios and production committees don't find them suitable for adaptation due to them not being merchandisable.

Because it's genre used mainly for self inserting for Lonely people isekai have amazing potential but in the end it all comes into loser protagonist, harem,op mc,game world, lack of world building
But lord of mystery webnovel by cn author will make every modern isekai look garbage in comparison this novel is not only famous in weebs in cn also popular among others there are news article praising it in my country where anime presence is very low and stuff like isekai never get mentioned even in anime community that means jp author mainly focus on their target audience which are otaku that's why isekai is very popular genre and it will never get popular outside their niche

Once upon a time it was focused on the MC male or female trying to return home. It was a major part of the plot development and at times the focus of the story.

In the 2010s it shifted to how the MC makes this new world his home and adapts to his situation.

The problem for me is the game characteristics dominating the world the MC ends up in. Remove completely any game related reference (HP, MP, skills and so on). Only leave the ability to learn things faster, or to be able to use knowledge from his previous world, or if he/she was talented in something, in the new world that talent evolves, or it completely disappeares.

While I personally will gobble up any isekai the anime industry excretes, I can see why so many people hate it. Aside from a few gems, almost all isekai have the exact same plot. The isekai "genre" is less of a genre and more of just a predetermined plotline, where the entirety of the story is laid out for you. You get teleported to a new world, are made into a hero to fight the demon king, and you defeat the demon king to return to your home world. You can basically predict the entire plot and conclusion without even reading the first chapter.

like others have said a lot of them consist of the same premise which isn’t that big of a deal but the problem is how many isekai are made nowadays, legit I think there are around 8-9 this season alone

It's not a problem with the isekai setting/genre itself. It's just how the anime industry keeps pumping out the same show with only a gimmick apart. Take this into account and then view the sheer amount of isekai per season. It gets tiring fast. Although, there are great isekai out there, take Re:Zero for example.

Short answer: most of them are boring as fuck.

Long answer: they are quite literally the same thing. Points, EXPs, leveling up yourself and your gears, becoming an adventurer, multiple classes (like healer and shit), guilds and so on. Why can't the parallel world not have any of those? Like, make it the same as our world, only remove the cars and technologies or something.

Same reason I don't really like "let's plays". Playing video games is much more fun than watching someone else play them, and every isekai is basically just meant to be a video game that you watch. If the writers of isekai series want to make a fictional video game so badly, why don't they just find a game studio and tell them their ideas. That's what a video game designer is, lol

Plus, it's so painfully obvious that most isekai writers don't even actually play the games they're "homaging". Video games are the best medium by far, so honestly most isekai are kinda like an insult to my passion, lol (that may be slightly hyperbolic though)

1) I don't like how the only place they seem to be isekaied to are European/medieval inspired fantasy or game worlds. Where are the dinosaur infested, wuxia swordsmen fighting on trees, cyberpunk zombie isekai? Kind of boring that they they all go the same brown roofed circular cities.

2) They seem to have familiarity with the place they are transported to and that takes away the appeal of being transported to "another world". Like they will remark "this is like those fantasy/isekai novels I read" or some other thing. It just takes me out of the whole thing.

- It's unoriginal and repetitive
- I don't like watching smart-ass overpowered MC with cheat abilities
- Majority of isekai setting is usually a mmorpg style world with all the gaming mechanisms

I don't inherently dislike isekai but...

Let me do a big detour to answer this question.
I occasionally do LARP (Live action role playing). There are some dumb rules for good play. One of them is this one: "Show, don't tell". If you know how to pick a lock, show i, don't tell it! If you are able make fireballs, show it, don't tell it. The characters have no stats about them know! They simply know, what they are able to. Even when there is a stat-heavy rules, the ingame character doesn't know. Therefore the player shows their abilities and don't tell them. This really helps to get immersed.

Now let us look into the typical isekai. The characters have stats. These stats are just a big "Tell". Isekai don't show the ability of the characters, they tell it. Heck, they often doesn't even try to show the use of these abilities, they just "activate" these abilities without showing a proper way to do the operation.
There are cases, where you this is good plot point. For example for shows like SAO (which isn't technically an isekai), the use of abilities is a big "Show" and not a "Tell", because it shows that we are in a game world. But SAO explicitely deals with the fact, that this inside of game worlds. The game world is no lame excuse to use these mechanics, it is a central part of the story. For isekais, we often don't have a game world or the fact, that this is a game world is often not more than an excuse.
(I never see the anime, but I think "My next live as a Villainness - All routes leads to doom" could be another example, where the game mechanics are no lame excuse. Just for the premise of the show)

Furthermore, we have mostly the same kind of harem, the same kind of overused sexualization, the same kind of overpowered hero...
But I will not focus of these points further

In short: "Isekai" is synonym for creativelessness.

Thing is isekai always tend to start with same starting point, like going in different world and getting OP with same story altogether, most come up with argument that shonen is that too but point is shonen not always start as a similar starting point as like they are shonen but their story tend to differ even tho they all are doing the same thing like for example take bleach, OP or naruto all have similar tendencies of fights, friendship etc but their key element differ from each other, like luffy wants to be a pirate king, naruto hokage and ichigo is bargain sale grim reaper, but it all take place in different scenario and world.

Now look at isekai all have same thing MC dies, goes to different world and then trains, become OP, have harem their whole objective comes down to those same things and it's over and over again. Die, resurrect, level up and harem and it goes so on, and don't get me wrong i enjoy isekai and i don't actually care about these things but isekai is predominantly a very "self insert" kind of thing as plot always follow a reclusive dude aka "hikokimori" which is very popular in japan and most dudes in japan living such life imagine themselves in that spot and for the same reason it is so popular no matter if it''s light novel or anime and in no time it's popularity is going down
2025 might be the year where I will be happy. This year is not happy year.

I don't hate Isekai but I do find that almost all of them are essentially reskins of one another with the same overall troupes to the point that you can stereotype the genre just by listing those troupes off such as harem king, overpowered hero, loser in real life, fantasy almost video game-ish world. Of course there are some that breaks the mold such as Konosuba trying to mock said troupes & shield hero trying to pretend it's different

I usually unintentionally avoid Isekai anime, so I can't say much about it. However, I do not believe that the issues mentioned make Isekai an inherently bad genre because most of the issues mentioned can be applied to any other genre. In the end, it all comes down to the narrative's quality.
