| Patting a small child's head of either gender is common even in the West but I'm not sure about any older. When I started looking it up It's usually considered offensive in Asian cultures because of Buddhist views on the sacredness of the head. | Anime girls are made to want nothing but affection from men, a head pat to them is like us men having our dicks touched. Super intimate, and honestly those kinds of scenes need more mosaics and an 18+ rating, you need to avoid these scenes if you want to be accepted into heaven. |

| I pat the head of my cousin who's in 1st grade. I think it's just an example of showing affection. Without going overboard, like hugs, kisses, pinching cheeks and whatnot. I mean if you're close, like siblings or if your parents know eachother and you get along, petting should be pretty tame. |

| It may be a way to visualize momentary closeness between characters that goes beyond mere words. It may be a way of showing affection but I can see why it'd be weird in real life. |
| If you do that over here it's not offensive but a bit funny: the other person may feel that you are treating them like a child, since patting a child's head of ruffling their hair is pretty normal. Maybe because it's easier to reach than their back or shoulders. (But really, when you affectionately pat a kid's head it's generally because you have something sticky in your hand and want to clean it without anyone noticing.) |
