Is the word overrated an overused buzzword at this point?

More than any community that I have been a part of, the anime community in particular really loves to use the word “overrated“. If any anime/character even remotely gains a bit of popularity, it gets dubbed as being overrated or “undeserving of it‘s popularity“. I feel like anime fans fail to understand that their personal preferences does not equal to the quality of that said character or anime. Of course not everyone is going to like everything that gets popular for many reasons. I have my fair share of popular anime or characters that I don‘t like, but I never felt the need to stick the label of overrated on them.

This is just my personal curiosity, I just want to know why or why don‘t people use this word and what‘s their opinion of them.

In an arena where all people do is talk about their opinions, it's no surprise that "overrated" -- basically "the consensus opinion is too high, in my opinion" is frequently used.

You know what it shows?
It shows that weebs don't know the difference between overhyped and overrated.

Weebs really finna be like "Bro XYZ series is overrated."
XYZ series in question's rating = 6.38/10
Overrated? Bro that shit barely above average.

Yes same as "cringe", "gay", "weeb" basically words that allow people with limited verbiage a quick and convenient way to express their disdain for things they're not appreciative of

People use the word "Overrated" for literally every popular anime out there. The term "Overrated" has completely lost it's meaning.Plus, they don't even give any reasons as to why it's overrated other than it's "generic".Heck the opinion "it is generic" is generic itself.

Understandable, if people explain the reason behind why they think so, then that‘s something I understand. Most of the overrated opinion never seem to have any explanation behind why they think so. Which I think comes down to that specific anime just not being something they enjoy, not because it‘s bad.

This is a website that ranks anime based on popularity. It would actually be weird not to call shows overrated here.

Some people might use the term "overrated" wrongly, but it still makes sense in some cases. Of course, overrated =/= any highly rated anime I didn't like.

The more popular an anime/manga is, the more it will be watched/read by less experienced users, which are more easily satisfied and thus rate higher. Recency bias is a well acknowledged phenomenon that is partially related.

The score of the manga of both Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen increased by more than 0.5 after the popularity boost brought on by the anime. It must mean that they were either underrated before or overrated now.
