Obviously, it's not the same for everyone, but generally people like badass, strong, and calculating characters in anime (Ex: Levi, Killua). On the other hand, people don't like characters who are weak, cry, and are too realistic (Ex: Subaru). Why is that? I just want to hear people's opinion so it's not an overrated/ underrated post.

Personally, I like the latter because they are more interesting and better written. Their is more room for development. They grow and become stronger through their experiences.

Why do people like cute and moe characters?
Why do people like weak and pathetic characters?
Why do people like tsunderes or yanderes?

Why do people even like fictional characters when they're not real?

Well, most people are watching anime to escape reality and they like those power fantasies so they can't deal with an MC who is not as strong/badass as they wish they were.

I don't really have a preference regarding the personality of characters. Just look at my favorites, they range from Natsume Takashi to Light Yagami.

Because they're badass, strong and calculating.

I do like characters like Subaru, Tanjirou or Mob as well, so I don't exclusively like the Killua/Levi type.

Most of the time it comes down to how well they mix with the other characters in the show. Killua was great because he was Gon's counterpart. Just like Sasuke and Vegeta were good because they were Naruto's and Goku's counterparts. I'm not sure if a show whose main character was Killua/Sasuke/Vegeta/Levi would be as good. I would be totally down for a show focused on Killua, though.

Cuz they fantasize and wish they'd become like these near perfect characters, Although, I think many of these "strong and calculating characters" can still develop and face obstacles along the story

It relates a lot to the character's environment and rivals, A character like Lelouch is more calculating than a SOL MC but his "obstacles" are basically an empire and not highschool drama, Light Yagami same thing, Conan same thing.

A character like Levi is "badass" because he can breeze through titans no problem, But a character like Killua is relatable and can be sympathized with because he can't breeze through Illumi, The chimera ants, Or even solve his own anxiety problems

It's basically the same ratio but bigger in scale.
I don't speak English that much, so please cut me some slack

It's fun to watch a character get absolutely shitted on by a calm guy. Self-insert is also another reason.

Badass/calculating characters tend to be impossible to hate. Who can hate Levi for example? Or who can hate Lelouch? They are cool characters and that's it. And not everyone share tastes damn, each one has his own favourites.

But if there's something that triggers me, is the hate those weak characters recieve. I LOVE these characters (look at my favourites lol) cuz, as you said, they are well written and more relatable than those who are smart as Einstein lol.

The fake is of far greater value. In its deliberate attempt to be real, it's more real than the real thing.

Well, as I said not everyone shares the same tastes. Lemme ask tho, why do u hate both of them?

I don't detest them but I don't like them either.
Lelouch just seems like an edgy brat to me. (It's funny coming from me since I like Light)
And Levi is just an "angry short guy".

Woah, didn't realize you're in my friend list.

For the same (er, similar) reason I'd prefer having attractive-looking male/female characters rather than plain-looking ones. If I'm gonna be starring at a character for ~5 hours (1 cour) then I'd at least want them to be entertaining/enjoyable

I tend to dislike those characters that are too weak and whatnot, not because they are too """realistic""" (as much of a buzzword as that is) but more that they tend to draw out more negative emotions like frustration/disappointment through things like irrational decisions and being subject to some annoying tropes (think of all the lame harem protags that just get beat around without a single care)

and also
Their is more room for development. They grow and become stronger through their experiences.
this may be true in theory, but in practice it doesn't really happen all that much. Look at someone like Kazuya from rental girlfriend for instance, he's pretty much stagnant throughout the entire series so far (close to 200 chapters at this point)

Plus honestly I think the good badass characters are also just better written. Like look at the likes of Sinbad, Kazami Yuuji, Dazai Osamu, all have some incredible backstories

Because a lot of shows I watch involve action, so having characters be good at making action happen is what I like to see. Whereas characters who get their butts kicked or are too afraid to get into the action are characters I tend to dislike.

Strong characters also make for good role models and a source of inspiration and motivation.

Typically shounen have either a wimpy mc or one that is overly eager, stupid and dense which makes smart/calculating mc's more refreshing in a way.

1. Because there is less interpersonal drama, as far as I've seen.
2. This ties into 1, but there is less misunderstandings and less bullshit.
3. Things get accomplished within a short time.
4. Fun to see how writers think that such a character should think.
5. I enjoy watching people get to the point rather fumbling about in "side missions".

Oh... Uhm.. Many of these are the same point, but I hope it is informing.

There are a few manga that are very to the point with calculating charachters. Send me a message if you are intrested, or I can put them here if you ask for them.

Because it’s refreshing to see these characters since there are almost few anime where MC is badass. You want to be like them too
Having the MC being badass makes the sorry more interesting too
I like Subaru since he is very realistic and I also want Protagonist to be badass or interesting not the side characters but it will be awesome if MC and SC were interesting

Everything you said for the latter being more interesting and better written, there being more room for improvement, growing and becoming stronger, can be said for the former characters.

Seeing strong characters develop and become stronger still, is far more interesting to me.

Also lol at you 30 character limit weirdos, put some thought into your posts.

Well personally I prefer a protagonist who has room to grow however it can be fun to watch more confident people in your anime. There's a sort of drive we all have to see our fiction be uplifting, look at King Arthur, from zero to hero ya know?

So ya I much prefer say Eva's Shinji or Shuffle's Rin etc. but all fun story's need an Obi wan Kenobi, your Rambha Rals of Gundam or Khaji in Eva etc.

There's also I think an element of critical vs feelings. Critically speaking I prefer a weak character like Subaru but sticking with Re;zero, my favorite character to watch was Wilhelm von Astraea s much like @

said, it can often be the case that your favorite from a show isn't the most in-depth but rather the most fun, that's not to say it can't be a case like with Leloch where he's well written and confident but ya get the picture.

I think it's a good changeup from the oversaturated 'play it dumb' MC who is never realistic in any sense. I myself like characters like Subaru too, but it's always refreshing to see characters like Lelouche operate in all majesty!

Also, FR sent!

It depends on how they're written, like any other type of character, in my opinion. I really like L and Shigeo, but I kind of hate Inbami and Zenitsu.

Honestly, I kind of like Subaru because he’s just as idiotic as a normal person. Having said that, sometimes it’s more fun to think about what humans might be capable of (granted in a fictional universe) than solely focusing on creating a realistic, average person

I like calculating characters because I like smarter fights. Badass just cause it's cool to watch and you want to see the protagonist coming out on top at times but on it's own can be just cringe.

I also like weak "realistic" characters but when it's just watching someone be a baby it gets annoying. I'm not interested in watching someone sniveling, whine, and do nothing for a whole show. They wanna grow overtime then cool. They wanna do some running because shiz be scary then cool. It's just when that's all they do that it gets annoying. I watch a show because I want to see something happen, change, or something interesting.

For specific characters I dont like Levi. I wouldnt call him calculating or deep he's just strong and angry. I think there are just alot of blind simps that like that character type especially in such a mainstream show. Killua I like but havent seen HunterxHunter in forever so cant talk too much on it. Subaru I liked as a written character in season one but that's it. And I got tired of him in season two but that was more him being unbelievably stupid just to move the plot around than him being weak or sad. Like so stupid it's almost a plot hole. I also wouldn't put him as a favorite because while I felt his emotions were well done to a point in the story there is nothing likeable or special about him. He's a bad person. His power is interesting in what it does to his mental state but not necessarily by itself. His goals are uninspiring. His interactions with other people are normal at most. He isnt quirky or funny. I dont see anything to like about him as a character.

Plus not everyone relates to the super dumb, awkward, and scared protagonists that gets shown alot in anime so for alot of people seeing someone jump into a fight to help their friend or have the intellectual capacity to put 2 and 2 together is more relatable.
