depends of the sub studio. Most suck, the text frames are to fast, I have to pause, kills flow =subs mostly suck

I keep up all the time. If the subs are going to fast, I'll just pause the video to get a better understanding of it.

Some anime's dialogue is really fast so I slow my pc down by like .045363 whatever and you can still watch it without it sounding or looking like its been slowed
Most anime I can keep up though

The Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei series forces me to pause so I can read the background text and stuff, but I can keep up with normal subs without problems. I actually once watched a Naruto episode on 3x the normal speed and caught every line of dialogue without a hitch. I turned a 20 minute into a 6 minute show. xD

Though I admit, Translator's Notes sometimes flash by too fast and I might go back just for them. They catch me off guard. :(

The only times I have to pause are those opening screens from Bakemonogatari, other than that I can easily read everything on the screen.

As long as I'm not sleep deprived or very drunk, I can keep up with the subtitles fine.

With Sayonara Zetsubou, and Bakemonogatari, I don't bother with the background stuff. It's meant to be ignored for the most part on tv, so why bother. Oh, Puni Puni Poemi was a difficult one. They talked way too fast. I felt ripped off for renting it even though it was free.

But as soon as I think about it it suddenly becomes harder

yes, definitely. But I kinda want to study japanese so when I read the translator say "damn!" or some cuss word, I go back and listen to what was said in Japanese. Imagine being able to cuss someone in two languages.

Who knows, might come handy someday.

As long as there isn't a TL note up at the top of the screen or something in the background that was translated, I can keep up with just about anything.

The only things I can remember confusing me is the way Eclipse does their karaoke effects, because they usually split the english, kana, and romaji into three areas of the screen, and I remember HnG!!'s 2nd ending being impossible to read because they did both of them singing >.x

Oh, and kyouka's ending from kyouran Kazoku Nikki, I'm not sure if that is supposed to be understandable at any rate of speed.

If you actually take a look, there is nice background information and tidbits sometimes in Bakemonogatari, but I guess if you can ignore them, more power to ya.

To be honest, I actually easier read subtitles, than hear voices.
Sometimes, when I watch American movie, I also download subtitles in the same language.

Especially the hilarious blackboard texts in SZS (My name is not Orange-kun!! Zero!!!)
If it's a good fansub, the TL notes aren't randomly put between the subs but are conveniently placed near the object of interest 8-) In that case it's not that hard to keep up

On a different note, noone voted 'I can't keep up'. Does this mean that the people who like the dub more because they can't keep up do not exist?

I can easily keep up with usual text, the problem is only sometimes with TL note or texts with more than 2 people talking at the same time.

I'm a fast reader, but I can still remember when I was watching saki with zero knowledge of mahjong, I had to pause and read every little TL note crammed into a ten second time frame (ended up being like 3 paragraphs of TL)

Yup, unless the subbers decide to sub 2 people talking >.> i hate that i always choose which one is more important like for instance the main characters talking, and in above the main sub theres the radio talk show subs lol.

I can keep up with the subs pretty much all of the time, unless the characters are talking really fast or there's a TL note. Then I have to pause it. I actually have a harder time watching things without subs, because I get distracted easily without them, and I end up completely ignoring whatever I'm watching.

Deleted various quotechains violating rule 7. That is, people who simply quote somebody and says "this" "me too" "pretty much" etc. If you have nothing more than that to say on the matter, just don't post please.

ditto, the only time i get thrown off is when i really want to pay attention to the on screen actions, or in the case of anime like puni puni poemi/excel saga where the characters talk insanely fast.

Most of the time I can.

Except when I was watching Ragnarok the Animation. Ugh....not only did I hate the anime, I hated the fact that the subtitles were in spanish. ):

I had to rewind it so many times.

I rarely have problems to follow the subs and if there is it's because of distracting, unnecessary and stupid translation notes... or poorly translated subs that make no sense or have a flow to them and gives of the impression that google translate was used (this is one of the reason I don't much shows that is currently airing).

Yeah, I can keep up well with the subs, I really dont have any problems with it.
Why so? Simply, cause I love reading, from when I know myself, I enjoyed always reading stuff so I can do it with any problems.
It helps me doing this * laughs * cause from the start I didn`t like reading in english.

Usually I can... If my mind wanders off when reading the subtitles then I can't. That means I'd be thinking about something else when the characters say something. My brain process cannot keep up with reading and thinking at the same time, lol. There are times when I have to go back though since there are sometimes bit of notes that the fansubs put at the top. I want to read what it says and also read the subtitles when they're talking. Sometimes it goes by fast o_o

Depends mostly, stuff like Ghost in the Shell I don't think I could ever watch in Japanese. Dialogue heavy shows are difficult to keep up with unless they're in english, I find.

Yeah subbing is the only way I go and usually I can keep up since usually japanese phrases are much longer than English, but if i can't I'll be able to tell and merely pause the video. I rather miss a word and get the emotion in the voice then watch the dubbed version where my cell phone shows more emotion when reading aloud text messages with its computerized voice.

Yep. I have no problem with it at all. The only reason why I fall behind sometimes is because I listen to the Japanese and interpret it in my own words, in my mind.
