In all long running anime, there are going to be things we find annoying, but I will just focus on the major ones.
1 - Naruto vs Kakuzu. One of my favourite seasons in the entire show had one of the worst endings. I hated that Kakashi, Shikamaru, Choji and Ino struggled so badly and Naruto just shows up and conveniently tricks him with his shadow clones to hit him with his new move. After all of that, this was how it ended? Naruto's shadow clones don't work against anybody worth their salt, but it works so easily against one of the most experienced shinobi's in the show? It always felt like lazy writing, because up to this point, Naruto had done nothing of note for a very long time and it just seemed like a moment to force Naruto to do something big.
2 - The team 7 relationship. Sasuke gets so much criticism, but it's Naruto and Sakura I have the biggest problem with.
Naruto's obsession with Sasuke is weird. I don't care what kind of excuse people have come up with over the years, Naruto's behaviour was unhealthy to the very end. Nobody can convince me they were best friends, they were rivals, nothing more. I can't remember a single time that they really bonded, Sasuke shown no interest in Naruto's life, I can't even remember a single normal conversation that they had throughout the show. Almost every character Naruto interacted with was a better friend than Sasuke.
As for Sakura.........what is she so obsessed about exactly? Okay, she thinks he's cool and hot, but what else? She knows next to nothing about Sasuke as a person, Sasuke barely said a word to her, he pretty much blanked her throughout the show. She was so selfish until the end, she wanted Sasuke back for herself, without any consideration for what Sasuke wanted or his mental state, or if it was even good for the entire shinobi world. She just want Sasuke bought back to her, even though he was never hers in the first place.
The way they treated Sai when he first joined the team still irritates me when I think about it. He was the only one talking sense when it came to discussions about Sasuke, but Naruto and Sakura were so obsessed that they couldn't see it and even threatened to kill Sai if he hurt Sasuke.
It was just before the war arc where this got so out of control though. Naruto collapsing from a panic attack and taking a beating for Sasuke was laughable. Naruto was so far gone at this point. His obsession had reached levels where he needed serious help, something he should have received from Jiraiya and Kakashi much earlier. Sasuke was a serious threat to the world at this point, he needed to be stopped and killed if necessary, and this was on top of the fact that a war was just about to begin and the entire leaf village was just destroyed.
I said it in another thread, but I think every other team in the show had a better bond and friendship than Team 7. Team 7 was a toxic mess.
3 - The war arc. I enjoyed it in parts, some of it was fantastic, but it just spiraled out of control the longer it went on. The power ups, the ridiculous twists, the constant fillers and padded flashbacks and to top it off........aliens. Madara should have been the final antagonist, it felt like everything was leading to this moment, but they had to throw one curve ball too many into the mix. The Otsutsuki clan was a bad idea, and it's led to the worst thing that happened to the Naruto universe with the creation of Boruto.
4 - Fillers, padding and flashbacks. None of these things are bad on their own, but the overuse of them almost killed the show at times. Towards the end, I was so ready for Naruto to finish. All of these issues had reached ridiculous levels. We couldn't go more than a handful of episodes without fillers or long, drawn out flashbacks. It became a chore to watch. People say "just skip it" but honestly, it's hard to do that when they would inject filler and padded flashbacks into canon episodes. Some of the flashbacks were canon themselves, but they were so drawn out it became ridiculous. There was a war going on but we would stop for a load of episodes to focus on the back story of a character that should have either come sooner or kept short so we could get back to the main story taking place. It was insane, and it's the one reason why I would be hesitant to rewatch Naruto again. |
