Matthew was such a great character, it's quite saddening that he's gone now.

Anne is now in a place where she can share and cope with her grief WITH Marilla as opposed to when she was a child and Marilla would basically watch from the sidelines while Anne drowned out any sorrows.

Matthew was such a gentle soul and he died knowing his bank was going under, so harsh. Even though there is only 3 eps left I will miss Matthew around the farm.... you did well raising Anne Matthew, you did well.

The preview from ep. 46 still had that happy little jingle while the narrator says the next episode is "The Reaper Whose Name Is Death."

"Please enjoy."

This was probably the saddest episode in any anime I've seen, I was shedding tears for Matthew, he really will be missed even if it's just 3 episodes left.

Some anime get quite sneaky in trying to limit their death flags. Akage no Anne set the scene at halfway the mark that Matthew was going to pass away. I'm not sure that made things easier to watch as you see the event slowly unfold.

Abbey's bank was just an excuse, a terribly cruel way for Matthew to die, but his health was deteriorating. One day we might all have to make Matthew's choice. Would we rather spend our days in retirement or want to work until the very end if possible.

To this date, I am a 100% certain that only Akage no Anne and Konnichiwa Anne series has managed to make me cry.

Damn. Now I remember why i put off watching this series for so long. Because I knew Mathew was going to die. Goddammit. I've been watching this show for 4 years, still have not finished because I didn't want it to end, and didn't want Matthew to die.
Again, the way the show is scripted and the 'shots', the music, sound and how the scenes are created, it is just breathless. No director other than Takahata can make you feel like you're watching a piece of art, even if the technology used is totally outdated now.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

Tears fell from my eyes. And not just a little. First time tears have fallen from my eyes from viewing something fictional ever. The most is a little bit of tearing up.

This episode handled grief in such a poignant way, I can't begin to describe it. I wish I had a guy like Matthew in my childhood. Hell I wish I had someone like Marilla too. Two brilliant supportive poignant characters that just don't exist anymore. Their love is transcendent. We don't see this sort of thing anymore and not even just in anime. Everything is so damn pandering and this is just so genuine.

I guess I'm rambling but wow, this is a masterpiece. Definitely a 10 and if they maintain the same quality for the last three episodes, this will be my favorite anime.

Matthew just died a few minutes ago and Mrs. Lynde already starts talking about that Marilla has to get over it...

What on earth is wrong with that woman? She treats this as if it was "business as usual".

Man... I didn't expect to cry in this episode.
I got so sad the moment when Anne started to remember Matthew's belongings that i couldn't take it anymore and started crying a lot.
Rest in Peace Matthew.

Maybe it's because I've realized my own mortality, but Matthew's passing made death feel even more near. The scene between Marilla & Anne was absolutely heartbreaking. "This is a grief only you and I know." I was all too eager to finally finish this and now I don't know if I can.

Also, would that narrator please shut the hell up for one episode?

You took the words out of my mouth! Agree with every single word here.
This kind of story about transcendent, unconditional love makes me feel more than any tragic love story.
I've watched this anime several times and still cry over this episode (and I rarely cry while watching a fictional show or movie). This anime may be outdated in its animation, but damn, this is the definition of timeless masterpiece, an artwork created with such care and love that it can evoke emotions from the audience in a way that most anime nowadays even with its more sophisticated animation technique can't.

Just like Anne and Merilla, I'm feeling devastated. I grew so attached to Matthew and how awesome of a parental figure he is!

I've been dreading reaching this episode since I started watching this show. I knew what was going to happen going in and MAN was it done beautifully. You really feel the impact and weight of Matthew's passing through just the animation, sound design and especially the vocal performances. Marilla and Anne's seiyuu sound like they're really genuinely crying during the final scene.
